CCB unearths illegal telephone exchange racket being operated from data centre in Whitefield

The Hindu3 days ago
A mobile service provider led the Central Crime Branch officials to unearth another illegal international telephone exchange racket being operated from a data centre in Whitefield.
Based on a complaint by the Department of Telecom and Vodafone, a team of officials raided Iron Mountain data centre in Whitefield and seized six SIM boxes, 133 SIM cards, 12 data storage servers, an Internet Protocol Private Branch Exchange (IPBX), a network router, and other equipment worth ₹10 lakh.
The police arrested Tufail Ahmed, 35, a BE graduate from Tamil Nadu, allegedly operating the centre, while his two associates were overseeing the operations from Dubai.
Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the accused converted international calls to local ones, and thus cheated service providers and telecallers. The police during the probe also found that the service was being used for cybercrimes, which is now part of the investigation.
The accused had rented space to run the illegal exchange.
This is the third case of an illegal telephone exchange racket operated from the city that was unearthed in the last one month.
The racket came to light based on the alert received by Vodafone from the Department of Telecommunications regarding a suspected illegal SIM box operation allegedly being used to facilitate cyber financial fraud. The activity was traced to the Whitefield area, specifically within the IT Park (ITPL).
The DoT also said that 107 mobile numbers issued by Vodafone-Idea Limited are suspected to be used in SIM box devices, in violation of telecom regulations.
The service provider found that all 107 SIM cards were issued to a company named Gleam Global Services India Private Limited. Technical analysis indicated that these SIM cards were misused in SIM box devices to route unauthorised or fraudulent calls, which constituted a serious breach under the Telecommunications Act, 2023.
The CCB officials, who had arrested Tufail in a similar case, took him into police custody for seven days and a detailed questioning led him to confess to the crime.
The CCB officials gathered details of his associates in Dubai and efforts are on to secure them. With this, the CCB officials managed to disconnect at least three networks of illegal telephone exchange rackets and they suspect that there are more.

Boy Killed, Many Injured In Cylinder Blast In Bengaluru, 6 Houses Damaged

Bengaluru: A 10-year-old boy was killed while nine others were injured in a cylinder blast in central Bengaluru's Wilson Garden this morning. Around six houses were damaged in the explosion in the tightly packed Chinnayanpalya, where houses mostly share the same boundary. The injured were taken to a hospital, and the rescue work is still on, said an official. A cylinder leak is suspected to have caused the blast. But Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that it is too early to ascertain the exact cause. A three-member family lived in the rented house where the blast occurred, the Police Commissioner told reporters. While the man had left for work in the morning, his wife and child were injured in the blast. The death was reported from a neighbouring house, he added. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the blast site later in the day and expressed condolences to the victim's family. "A boy named Mubarak has died. There is information that nine people have been injured. Currently, treatment is being given to everyone. All have been admitted to hospitals and are receiving treatment," said the Chief Minister. He has also announced a Rs 5 lakh financial assistance for the victim's family. Besides, the cost of treatment of the injured will be borne by the government, he said. The police control room had received a call about the blast around 8.30 am. Soon, the bomb disposal squad, anti-terrorism squad, State Disaster Response Force, fire brigade, and the local police were informed, the Police Commissioner said earlier. "We are clearing the houses that are damaged, investigation is on," said Mr Kumar.

Bengaluru police name wife of ex-Karnataka DGP Om Prakash in chargesheet for his murder

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the Bengaluru police has filed a chargesheet against the wife of former Karnataka director-general of police Om Prakash, 68, in the case related to his murder in Bengaluru on April 20, 2025. The CCB has named Pallavi Prakash, 65, as the sole accused in the brutal murder of her husband at their home in Southeast Bengaluru's HSR Layout, alleged to have been triggered by a property dispute within the family. While the chargesheet was filed last month, the case was committed for trial recently, and the hearings before a trial commenced on August 2. Though the FIR registered on a complaint filed by Karthikesh Prakash, 40, the son of the murdered police officer, also named his sister Kriti Prakash, 31, as being involved in the murder on account of her presence at the house at the time of the crime, the CCB has not named her as an accused in its chargesheet. No clean chit yet for Om Prakash's daughterA CCB official stated that the police officer's daughter, who had mental illness in the past, had not been given a clean chit yet since the chargesheet has a provision for further investigations. 'She (daughter) has not been given a clean chit; the investigation is still open,' Bengaluru police sources said. Om Prakash's wife and the daughter were suffering from depression and frequently fought with the retired police officer, his son stated in his complaint, on the basis of which the FIR was registered in April. Karthikesh Prakash further stated in his complaint that his father had moved out of his home due to the frequent fights and threats from his wife Pallavi Prakash, and that his sister Kriti Prakash had convinced him to return home before the murder. The retired police officer was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds on his body at the house in HSR Layout. Karthikesh Prakash expressed suspicion in his complaint that his mother and sister might have murdered his father. The postmortem report in the case showed that as many as 34 injuries had been inflicted on the victim with nearly 4-5 incision wounds behind the head portion, back, and neck. The investigations found that on the morning of the murder, the wife and the daughter of the retired police officer fought with him at around 10.30 am over the distribution of his properties. Their call detail records showed they were present at the house on that day ahead of the discovery of the murder at 4.30 pm. Pallavi poured Harpic into Om Prakash's ears The police have also found that 10 days prior to the murder, Pallavi Prakash had poured the cleaning liquid Harpic into the ears of the retired police officer while he was sleeping. An alarmed Om Prakash then moved to his sister's house, the police found. Karthikesh Prakash also told the police in a statement that his mother had assaulted his father four years ago with a cooking vessel, causing bleeding injuries. The family was reportedly in a dispute over the sharing of the retired police officer's property, with his wife and his daughter being opposed to the preferential treatment for the son. In May this year, the CCB summoned the police officer's daughter, Kriti Prakash, thrice but she did not appear for questioning by indicating emotional and mental issues. She also approached court for anticipatory bail at the time but her plea was rejected. Om Prakash's daughter alleges neglect Kriti Prakash has argued that she was on the third floor of the house when the murder occurred and that she was not involved in the crime in any way. She allegedly faced neglect and abuse at the hands of her father and brother in the past. One of the reasons for suspicion against her, however, was a mobile phone call made to the police officer's phone at 4.29.44 pm, leading to a two-minute conversation just before the murder. The police also found screenshots of property conversations between the retired police officer and his son on Kriti Prakash's mobile phone. A native of Bihar, Prakash was a 1981-cadre IPS officer who started his career as additional superintendent of police of Ballari district. Apart from serving in various districts as superintendent of police, he was with the Lokayukta police and served as DGP of the Criminal Investigation Department before becoming director-general & inspector-general of police (DG & IGP) in 2015. He retired in 2017.
