Red Sox optioning rookie Kristian Campbell to Triple A
Four days after the stunning trade of slugger Rafael Devers, the Boston Red Sox are optioning infielder Kristian Campbell to Triple A, according to a league source. Campbell, who earned the American League's Rookie of the Month for March/April, has struggled since the start of May and is batting only .223/.319/.345 on the season.

Campbell, 22, signed an eight-year, $60 million contract extension days after making the Opening Day roster. He was coming off a breakout 2024 season during which he earned Minor League Player of the Year from several publications, including The Athletic. Campbell, the 132nd pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech, rose three levels last season from High A to Triple A, hitting .330/.439/.558 with 20 home runs and 24 stolen bases in 115 games while showing his defensive versatility by playing second base, shortstop, third base and centerfield. He was ranked the No. 9 prospect in baseball by The Athletic's Keith Law at the start of the season.
With the second base position open at the start of spring, Campbell was a leading candidate to make the team out of spring training but he initially struggled before a mid-spring conversation with veteran Trevor Story helped him get back on track. He made his major-league debut on Opening Day in Texas, going 1-for-3 with a walk. Campbell was hot to start the season and had a .902 OPS at the end of April, earning him the AL Rookie of the Month award for March/April. He missed a few games at the start of May with what was described as right rib discomfort. Since the start of May, he's hit only .159/.243/.222.
The Red Sox are off on Thursday and haven't announced the move officially. It isn't immediately clear who would replace him on the roster, though one option could be Masataka Yoshida, the left-handed hitting outfielder who is coming off of shoulder surgery that has prevented him from throwing. He has been able to swing and could slide into the designated hitter role now that Devers has been traded to the Giants.
The Red Sox have several options to take over at second base already on the roster, including Marcelo Mayer, another top prospect who made his debut in late May. A natural shortstop, Mayer has been playing third base but can also play second. Utility men Abraham Toro, David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez all have MLB experience at second base. In the minors, the Red Sox have several other options to play second, including Nick Sogard and Vaughn Grissom.

Fever head coach to miss 2nd game of season
The post Fever head coach to miss 2nd game of season appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Indiana Fever are currently gearing up for a road game against the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday evening from San Francisco. Indiana is coming off of a resounding home win over the Connecticut Sun in which Caitlin Clark scored 20 points in her second game since returning from an injury. Advertisement Ahead of Thursday's contest, the Fever got some tough news regarding their head coach Stephanie White. 'NEW: Steph White will not be with the team at Golden State tonight for personal reasons,' reported Chloe Peterson of IndyStarSports on x, formerly Twitter. Peterson also added that 'Austin Kelly will be the acting head coach, similar to how he was at Chicago.' Despite the win on Tuesday against Connecticut, the big story of the game was the scuffle that took place with just seconds left, when Sophie Cunningham of the Fever committed a hard foul on Jacy Sheldon of the Sun in retaliation to Sheldon's foul on Clark earlier in the game. Advertisement The skirmish resulted in multiple technical fouls as well as the ejection of Cunningham, although the league ruled that she will not be suspended for Thursday's game on the road. A big stretch for the Fever Grace Smith/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Caitlin Clark has looked every bit like herself since returning from an injury that kept her out for multiple weeks earlier in the season. Her Fever teammates did an admirable job of holding down the fort in her absence, and now, the team is over the .500 mark as they embark on this West Coast trip. Clark recently produced one of the highlights of her young WNBA career with a virtuoso performance to hand the New York Liberty their first lost of the season, at one point nailing three pointers on three straight possessions to send the crowd into a frenzy. Advertisement The Golden State Valkyries have had a decent start to their inaugural season in the WNBA, currently sitting at 5-6 11 games into the campaign. In any case, the Fever and Valkyries are slated to tip things off on Thursday at 10:00 PM ET. Coveted Star Issues Promise to Georgia: 'I Won't Forget'
Coveted Star Issues Promise to Georgia: 'I Won't Forget' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Things remain very much up in the air with the recruitment of five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson. But after his official visit to the Georgia Bulldogs last weekend, it's rather clear that no matter where the linebacker plays college football, he'll have a place in his mind for Georgia. Advertisement Atkinson suggested as much while speaking to Dawg Nation's Jeff Sentell this week. "I won't forget this visit," Atkinson told Sentell on Tuesday. When asked why he wouldn't forget it, Atkinson was again direct. "That's a good question, but I'm going to keep it to myself on this one." Sentell reported Atkinson's visit to the Bulldogs was "an absolute home run" from the school's perspective. The linebacker appears to share in that feeling. 'They want me there,' Atkinson told Sentell. 'They want me bad. They are doing everything they can to get me there. That's the message.' Georgia Bulldogs football head coach Kirby Smart© Joshua L. Jones / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The On3 prediction machine has the Bulldogs as the favorite to land Atkinson, but it's a very close competition. Advertisement The prediction machine gives Georgia a 32.8% chance of signing the linebacker. The Clemson Tigers are second at 10.9%. In addition to Georgia, Atkinson has officially visited the Tigers and Oregon Ducks. Sentell wrote the linebacker may see the Ohio State Buckeyes next, but on Thursday, Atkinson tweeted that he plans on visiting the Texas Longhorns again. According to the 247 Sports composite rankings, Atkinson is the No. 1 linebacker and top Georgia prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. Atkinson is also rated the No. 9 overall recruit. Sentell called Atkinson the best inside-the-box linebacker prospect in Georgia since NFL All-Pro Roquan Smith.
