18-yr-old BBA student on day out with friends falls ill at Nicco Park, dies

Kolkata: A BBA student died during a day out with friends at Nicco Park on Wednesday. Police suspect he died of heart attack.
Rahul Das (18), the only child of his parents, studied at a private university in New Town.
On Wednesday, Das, along with six friends, had reached the park around 11 am, said police and park officials. They had gone to celebrate a friend's birthday. The seven youngsters had entered the water park—Niagara Falls—when Das suddenly fell ill around 1 pm. According to witnesses, he was standing on the balcony at the water park area and was joking around when he collapsed. His friends rushed to his rescue. Lifeguards seated him in a wheelchair and took him to the first aid section.
The nurse at the Nicco Park medical room examined him and said his pulse was low. Das was put on a park ambulance and taken to Calcutta Heart Clinic, where doctors declared him dead.

Sources at the clinic said the youth was brought into the emergency around 1.10 pm. "At least four doctors attended to the boy. We found no BP. Still, we tried to revive him but all attempts failed," said a hospital source. Doctors said a sudden cardiac arrest or underlying health conditions could have led to the death.

There was no evidence of foul play. "Only a post-mortem can confirm the cause of death," said a doctor.
Police recorded Das's friends' and other witnesses' statements and collected CCTV footage. Senior officers said prima facie, no foul play could be established. "He seemed to have suffered a sudden cardiac arrest," said an officer.
But his father, Satyajit Das, said: "My son had no health problem. I lost him solely due to negligence."
He claimed had the amusement park provided initial medical aid when his son fell ill, it could have been averted. Claiming the ambulance didn't have an oxygen cylinder, he said he intended to lodge an FIR against the park. "If required, I will seek the CM's help," he said.
But Nicco Park MD Rajesh Raisinghani said: "The boy was immediately taken to the first aid centre where a nurse checked him. He was then taken to a nearby hospital by a park ambulance. The boy felt uneasy around 1.05 pm, and he was in the hospital by 1.11 pm," he said. A Nicco Park official said, "Our lifeguards took the boy to the first aid section within two-three minutes."
DC (Bidhannagar) Anis Sarkar said initial investigations revealed the youth was feeling unwell but he did not alert anyone immediately.

100% dues to be recovered from casinos: Sawant
Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant told the assembly that state govt has issued notices to casino operators for the recovery of dues. Sawant said raids are being conducted at onshore casinos where live gaming takes place, while responding to a discussion on the demand for grants for the home department on Tuesday. 'Notices were issued, and 100% recovery will be completed. Some cases are in court,' Sawant said. 'We have increased fees by 100% for new casinos.' Sawant urged people to verify tenants because if a tenant is found involved in any criminal case, the homeowner shall be booked. He stated that 12 new history-sheets were opened in the state and 471 touts were booked. He noted that police reach the scene of a crime in 11 minutes. He denied the opposition's charge that promotions have been held back in police. 'Maximum promotions have been cleared during my tenure,' he said. The CM said that the crime detection rate is increasing day by day, and awareness drives on cybercrime and women safety have been conducted. Where the excise department was concerned, Sawant said that revenue from liquor sales has doubled since 2020 — from Rs 491 crore to Rs 947 crore in 2024 — and this shows that tourism has increased in the state. He said no truck carrying illegal liquor will cross the border. Sawant noted that every month, GST collection is on the rise in the state.
