
ICDM highlights importance of benchmark certification for company directors, boards
KUALA LUMPUR: The Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia (ICDM) wants company directors and boards to be more than mere corporate figureheads ahead of the introduction of a formalised director certification framework to advance the professionalisation of boards.
The institute encourages corporate directors to discard outdated mindsets, relearn what the future demands and embrace innovation with courage and a relentless commitment to board excellence and their continuous development.
It also emphasises the importance of the coming launch of a national Professional Directors Certification Framework (PDCF) this year, a new benchmark for board directors.
The PDCF is a structured, competency-based pathway for directors and the industry, globally aligned with a benchmarked baseline qualification. This aligns with the roadmap set out by the Securities Commission Malaysia to achieve a resilient and high-performing capital market.
ICDM president and CEO Michele Kythe Lim stated that, at present, anyone can be selected as a board member, and there are no specific qualifications required.
'We want to raise the standard and improve governance while supporting the Securities Commission's priority in the capital market to increase returns. If you're a better governing board with a better-run company, you'd have better profits and returns in the capital market.
'That's our intention, and we are supporting this as well,' she said after the institute's 8th annual general meeting held recently.
ICDM is Malaysia's national institute of directors dedicated to strengthening corporate governance and board effectiveness through world-class director development and advisory services.
Lim said the new national set of standards aims to significantly accelerate the growth of a diverse and qualified talent pool of directors across both the public and private sectors, as well as government-linked boards, to help companies achieve optimal board composition from the outset.
She added that it is important to ensure board members of companies are chosen fairly based on a qualified and fixed standard that allows them to contribute to the company well.
Lim said ICDM has grown considerably over the past year, with its overall revenue increasing 53%, its Leading for Impact Programme's revenue rising by 172%, and Aspiring Directors Immersion Programme's revenue increasing by 211%.
'Our directors' registry also features 1,264 prescreened, board-ready candidates who can take up the role of board member,' she added.
Lim emphasised that the future of an organisation depends on the precise and integral leadership of boards and directors.
'Therefore, they must champion governance, accountability, and performance standards with the same rigour they demand from the companies they oversee. As the national institute of directors, we are committed to these standards, a commitment proven by an independent Board and Director Effectiveness Evaluation of our own board, which reaffirmed our strengths,' she said.
ICDM executive vice-president and succeeding president and CEO Jackie Mah said it is rewarding to see members appreciate the projects and initiatives that they have taken on, particularly to engage members more holistically.
'We've grown our member base from a small base to up to 1,500 last year,' she said. 'Members were satisfied and happy with development training that we do as well as our advisory support and they really felt that we have set up an ecosystem to help directors progress to the next level.'
Mah said ICDM has delivered over 500 programmes and trained more than 30,000 directors.
'Just as we hold employees of organisations to certain standards and evaluate them with clear key performance indicators, boards and directors should also have mechanisms in place to evaluate their performance and development.'
'The PCDF is not just a certification – it is a commitment to ensuring exemplary standards and quality of leadership among directors across the public and private sectors to meet rigorous, clearly defined benchmarks,' Mah said.

Malaysia's growth to ease in 2025 as global risks mount: ICAEW
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's economy is expected to expand at a slower pace in 2025, with growth moderating to 4.3 per cent from 5.1 per cent in 2024, according to the ICAEW Southeast Asia Economic Insight: Q2 2025 report. The moderation reflects weaker external demand, particularly from major trading partners like the US and China, despite a short-lived boost in exports earlier this year. In April 2025, Malaysia's goods exports jumped 26 per cent year-on-year, largely due to businesses fast-tracking shipments to the US ahead of new tariffs. However, this spike is expected to fade, with export growth forecast to weaken sharply in the second half. The first quarter of 2025 (Q1 2025) saw exports already slow to 1.6 per cent, well below the 7.1 per cent average of the prior three quarters. Malaysia's goods exports surged by 26 per cent year-on-year in April 2025, driven by businesses front-loading shipments to the US to avoid impending tariff hikes. However, ICAEW said this is expected to be a temporary boost, with export growth likely to moderate significantly in the second half of the year. The report noted that goods export growth had already slowed notably to 1.6 per cent year-on-year in Q1 2025, well below the 7.1 per cent average growth rate recorded over the preceding three quarters. "Despite Malaysia's diversified export base, it remains vulnerable to external shocks, with more than 4 per cent of its GDP and approximately 11 per cent of its gross exports tied to US demand, either directly or indirectly, further underscoring the country's vulnerability to external shocks. "A blanket US tariff rate of 10 per cent on Malaysian imports, although lower than the initially proposed 24 per cent rate, still poses substantial downside risks for exporters. "Additionally, weaker demand from China, Malaysia's largest export destination, creates further threats to Malaysia's external trade environment," it said. Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi, ICAEW council member and executive chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia, underscored the importance of regional unity. Speaking at the Asean Investment Conference 2025, he urged deeper intra-bloc collaboration and investment to help buffer the region against global volatility. In a time of global uncertainty, working together and investing within the bloc will be key to unlocking the region's potential, he said. With fiscal space constrained by elevated public debt, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) is expected to play a more active role. With inflation steady at 1.5 per cent, the central bank has room to implement a 50 basis-point rate cut later this year to support domestic consumption and investment, ICAEW said. It also highlighted a clear softening trend across GDP, private consumption, and trade indicators between March 2022 and March 2025, reflecting broader caution in the economy.

Syed Zaid to steer CIMB's Forward30 growth strategy
KUALA LUMPUR: CIMB Group Holdings Bhd says it looks forward to the leadership of Datuk Syed Zaid Albar as it embarks on its Forward30 strategic plan, which charts the banking group's direction over the next six years. Group chief executive officer Novan Amirudin said Syed Zaid's appointment comes at a pivotal moment for CIMB, as it aims to cement its position as a top-of-mind Asean bank. "Our Forward30 strategic plan anchors CIMB's purpose of advancing customers and society. Our goal is to be the top-of-mind Asean bank, reimagining banking by embedding ourselves into our customers' lives and keeping our customers at the heart of everything we do," he said in a statement. The Forward30 strategy focuses on four growth levers to boost performance by 2030. They include optimising capital, lowering funding costs through a stronger deposit base, driving cross-selling via a "one-bank" model, and enhancing capabilities. CIMB announced Syed Zaid's appointment as group chairman effective July 20, 2025. The former head of the Securities Commission Malaysia will succeed outgoing chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad, who retires from the board on July 19 after serving since 2015, including as chairman since 2018. Novan also paid tribute to Mohd Nasir, expressing the board's deepest appreciation for his decade of service. "His contributions have been instrumental in shaping CIMB's progress to be a leading focused Asean bank." Under Mohd Nasir's leadership, CIMB has grown into one of Asean's largest financial institutions, with total assets of RM755.1 billion as of December 31, 2024, and a market capitalisation of RM75.2 billion as of March 31, 2025.
