Pak Hindu refugees get temporary breather, many apply for long term visas

Jaisalmer
: With India revoking visa services to all but diplomatic, official and long-term visa holders, Hindu Pakistani citizens on short-term visas in India made a beeline to apply for long-term visas before the deadline ended on Sunday.
Over Saturday and Sunday, over 800 Hindu Pakistani citizens in Jaisalmer prepared and submitted their long-term visa applications at the Foreigners Registration Office.
Dalip Singh Sodha of the Seemant Lok Sangathan said, "We received assurances of relief from the govt. There is a possibility of relief for Hindu refugees from Pakistan, and we have high hopes from this decision." Under this relief,
displaced Hindu refugees
from Pakistan who came to India on short-term visas were asked to apply for LTV (Long Term Visa). If they apply for LTV within the deadline, they may be allowed to stay in India permanently, Sodha said.
He said it is likely govt may issue specific orders for Hindu refugees from Pakistan, providing them relief for a certain period. "This could be a historic step, proving to be a lifeline for thousands of Hindu refugees displaced from Pakistan to India," Sodha added.
By Sunday, over 800
Pakistani Hindu refugees
had applied for long-term visas. However, Sodha said if the LTV applications are not completed within the specified time frame, concerned persons may have to return to Pakistan.

Row over Ajit's wife attending RSS women's org meeting

Mumbai: After a row erupted over Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar attending a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) affiliated women's organisation's meeting in Delhi on Wednesday, the MP on Thursday issued a clarification, saying was there to get firsthand information on their initiatives and methods of working. NCP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sunetra Pawar attending a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) affiliated women's organisation's meeting in Delhi on Wednesday. 'Please do not attribute any political meaning to my presence there. My purpose was, is, and will always be to understand and encourage the work of women in society,' the Rajya Sabha MP and wife of NCP chief and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said in a post on social media platform X on Thursday. Though the Ajit Pawar-led NCP is part of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, it does not endorse the RSS' majoritarian agenda and Pawar himself avoids sharing the stage with RSS leaders. The party has also been publicly opposing Hindutva initiatives taken by its two principal allies – the BJP and the Shiv Sena. On Wednesday, Sunetra Pawar and other MPs attended a meeting of the RSS-affiliated Rashtra Sevika Samiti at BJP MP Kangana Ranaut's residence in Delhi. Ranaut herself posted photos of the meeting on social media platforms, including one showing Sunetra Pawar delivering a speech. 'Together, we will further strengthen Sanatan values, Hindu culture, and national consciousness. Our collective resolve is to continuously work for human service, nation-building, and the preservation of Sanatan culture. The awareness and participation of women are what empower the nation,' Ranaut wrote in a post on X on Wednesday. After the photos began doing the rounds of various social media platforms, the NCP (SP), headed by Ajit Pawar's uncle Sharad Pawar, mounted a scathing criticism. Rohit Pawar – grand nephew of Sharad Pawar, nephew of Ajit Pawar and the NCP (SP) MLA from Karjat-Jamkhed – termed it as 'double standard'. 'On one hand, you claim yourself to be a follower of progressive ideology and on the other, attend an RSS meeting. It is nothing else but double standards,' Rohit said, taking a jibe at his uncle Ajit Pawar. Although the deputy chief minister had joined the ruling alliance, he may not have accepted their ideology, Rohit said. 'But he must be under pressure to attend their programme and get photographed. This helps send a message that they (the Ajit Pawar-led NCP) have also accepted the RSS ideology,' he added. Ajit Pawar responded to the row cautiously, saying, 'I don't know as I don't keep tabs on minute-to-minute details of my wife's programme.' Subsequently, Sunetra Pawar issued a clarification on X, saying, 'I am always eager to get firsthand knowledge of the work done by various women's organisations. Women from different states were participating in that meeting. I attended it to understand their initiatives and working methods.'

PWD takes possession of disputed Imambara in M.P.'s Dhar; heavy force deployed

The Public Works Department (PWD) of the Madhya Pradesh Government has taken the possession of a disputed Imambara from the local Muslim community in Dhar district under heavy police protection, authorities said on Thursday (August 21, 2025). A large number of personnel remain deployed in the area. On the intervening night of August 19 and 20, the PWD took possession of the long-disputed property from the local Tazia Committee over a month after the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) ruled in the favour of the department. The local Tazia Committee has challenged the move in the Supreme Court. Dhar Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Kumar Singh told The Hindu that at least 1,500 security personnel, including one company of the Special Task Force (STF) and two companies of the Special Armed Forces (SAF), and surveillance from neighbouring buildings as well as drones. The multi-layered security arrangements remain in place given the sensitivity of the matter, he added. A local Hindu body, Sanskritik Dharohar Raksha Manch Samiti had been running a campaign to get it vacated since 2021 and has submitted requests to the district administration. Earlier this year, the district administration issued a notice to the Tazia Committee, prompting the body to move the Madhya Pradesh High Court against it. However, in April, 2025, the High Court directed the Dhar SDM to decide on the matter, who after hearing representation from the concerned sides, declared in the favour of the PWD on July 14. The Muslim body approached the Divisional Commissioner against the order which was turned down, prompting it to move the Supreme Court. Mr. Singh said, 'The building used to be the property of the Dhar ruler earlier and had been under the control of the PWD since the independence. In 1973, the Tazia Committee took it on rent for about two weeks to prepare the Muharram tazias and has been in their possession ever since.' He said that for a month after the SDM court's order, the police and the administration had held several meetings with community leaders and bodies from both Hindu and Muslim communities to ensure that the possession can be taken peacefully. 'The situation is peaceful in the area but we have kept the security cover to prevent any incident,' he said. Dhar has been communally sensitive for years due to multiple religious disputes, including the famous Bhojshala-Kamal Maula mosque dispute between the Hindu and Muslim communities.

Samajwadi Party didn't stand with Hindus in communal riots: Yogi Adityanath

Attacking Samajwadi Party's PDA pitch yet again, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday accused the party of not standing with the Hindus during the communal riots. Addressing a public meeting in Aligarh to observe the fourth death anniversary of former U.P. Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, Mr. Adityanath alleged, 'Those who want to break the unity of society by talking of PDA didn't speak for Hindu victims during the communal riots of Aligarh, Bareilly, Meerut, and Muzaffarnagar.' Mr. Adityanath specified that the Hindu victims of communal violence included Dalits, backward classes, businessmen, and Hindus belonging to the general category. 'Only the BJP stood for them for we believe in development and security for all but appeasement of none,' he claimed. PDA is a Hindi umbrella acronym for backward castes, Dalits, minorities, tribals, and women, and which paid electoral dividends to the SP in the Lok Sabha polls. Expanding PDA as 'Parivar Development Authority' to accuse the SP of working for the interest of the Mulayam Singh Yadav family, Mr. Adityanath said in the last eight years of the BJP rule, when the State had become riot- and mafia-free, those who want 'sabka saath for parivaar ka vikaas' once again wish to divide society. Observed as Hindu Gaurav Diwas, the place and timing of the remark assume significance because Babuji, as Singh was fondly called, was not only a Hindutva icon of the BJP but was also the foremost face of the party who resigned from the CM's post in December 1992 after he violated the affidavit given to the Supreme Court where he promised to the Babri mosque would be protected. However, in 2024, the party suffered a setback when Rajveer Singh, his son, lost the family's traditional Etah seat in the Lok Sabha polls, where votes of Lodhs and Mauryas play a decisive role. Sounding in a firefighting mode, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya made a strident pitch for Bharat Ratna for Babuji and said Aligarh would soon be renamed Harigarh. Presenting the resignation of Singh before being sacked in 1992 as an act of sacrifice, Mr. Adityanath said, 'By taking the responsibility of the demolition of the disputed structure, he brought the symbol of slavery to ruin and paved the way for the construction of Ram Temple.' Taking on the INDIA alliance, the Chief Minister further alleged that on the one hand, the SP talks of PDA, while on the other, when the infiltrators from Bangladesh and Pakistan, and Rohingya are being removed from voter lists to secure the interests of the deprived and the backwards, the party, along with Congress, is putting a spanner in the efforts of the Election Commission and the judiciary. Earlier, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also cited Singh's 'sacrifice' and Uma Bharti's resignation as Madhya Pradesh's CM in 2003 (after warrants were issued against her in the Hubli riots case of 1994) to defend the contentious Bill on the removal of the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers arrested on serious charges for 30 days. 'While Babuji and sister Uma Bharti resigned because of their nationalist beliefs, [AAP national convener] Arvind Kejriwal didn't demit office despite criminal charges.' He said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described the Bill as 'black' because he had aligned with criminals in U.P. and Bihar. Ms Bharti, who also hails from the Lodh community and describes herself as Singh's sister, made a surprise entry at the event. After praising Mr. Adityanath for effectively taking forward the crime control policies started by Singh, she struck a note that indicated her interest in returning to mainstream politics. 'Those hailing from the clan of Babuji should take a pledge to claim their rights like a lion and not wait for the leftovers like jackals. I will be alive as long as you need me, the nation needs me,' she said. Currently, Singh's grandson serves as a Minister of State in the U.P. government, and his acolyte, B.L. Verma, is a Minister of State at the Centre.
