Tirupati DFO stresses on native plant varieties for better green cover

The Hindu28-05-2025
District Forest Officer (Tirupati) P. Vivek on Wednesday emphasised on the need to plant native varieties to ensure a harmonious development of greenery in the district. At the launch of Vanamahotsavam, annual mass plantation drive, at the Divyaramam Eco Park near Kapilatheertham, the DFO unveiled an ambitious plan to plant five lakh native varieties.
Mr. Vivek said, 'Native varieties have protected our soil, water, and life for centuries. Local communities, volunteers and nature lovers must take responsibility for safeguarding these trees'.
Describing the Seshachalam Biosphere Reserve as a harmonious blend of spirituality and nature, Mr. Vivek highlighted the forest department's initiatives like environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, restoration and awareness. 'Native plants such as terminalia bellirica (Tani), albizia amara (usiri), pterocarpus marsupium (red sandalwood), syzygium cumini (neredu) are being planted during forest expansion drives, as they have been a natural part of the region's ecosystem for centuries and play a vital role in the ecological balance', he said.
The DFO pointed out that invasive foreign species like prosopis juliflora and lantana camara were being eradicated and controlled in view of their harmful impact on native biodiversity.
The DFO urged the public to take part in the drive and plant their favourite native sapling on important days and events. Responding to the DFO's call, senior journalist and nature enthusiast P. Ramachandra Reddy planted a Kadamba plant marking his 65th birthday. Trekkers, nature lovers and morning walkers took part in the drive in large numbers.

Native tree every 10 metres in Pimpri Chinchwad to make city greener

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has launched a unique initiative to plant native trees every 10 metres on both sides of major roads across the city. This tree plantation drive specifically targets stretches where greenery was previously lacking. The aim is to replicate the lush green road aesthetics seen in areas like Nigdi Pradhikaran throughout other parts of the city, including BRT corridors and other key urban stretches, the civic administration said. Priority is being given to roads where tree canopy is currently minimal. Trees are being planted on footpaths and adjacent open spaces at regular 10-metre intervals. The focus is on native species that are both ecologically beneficial and well-adapted to the city's climate. In addition to roadsides, PCMC will also carry out plantation in other public open spaces to increase the city's overall green footprint. The campaign is being actively implemented by the Garden and Tree Conservation Department of PCMC. Native species being planted Among the indigenous species planted under this initiative are: Neem, Tamhan, Kadamba, Banyan, Peepal, Akashneem, Bakul, Arjun, Mahogany, Sonchafa, and Parijat. To ensure protection of these trees, PCMC is installing bamboo and iron tree guards, based on the location and need. Regular maintenance and monitoring arrangements are also in place to support tree survival and growth. 'Planting trees every 10 metres along both sides of city roads will make Pimpri Chinchwad greener and more beautiful. The support we're receiving is encouraging, and I urge all citizens to take part in this effort to make our city more nature-friendly,' Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh said. 'This initiative will significantly enhance green cover and help reduce pollution and urban heat. Trees are currently being planted along all developed roads, and we plan to continue the same approach for all future road projects. We are committed to making Pimpri Chinchwad a greener and healthier city,' said Pradip Jambhale Patil, Additional Commissioner. Zone A: 201 trees Zone B: 910 trees Zone C: 2048 trees Zone D: 650 trees Zone E: 731 trees Zone F: 465 trees Zone G: 230 trees Zone H: 206 trees

Kothagudem: Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) N Balaram planted 204 fruit-bearing saplings on Monday as part of the Vanamahotsavam celebrations held at the Kothagudem Bungalows area. With this, his personal tree plantation tally has reached 19,775 saplings, planted across different areas of the Singareni company from 2019. Balaram began this journey on June 5, 2019, World Environment Day, by planting 108 saplings. Since then, he has actively participated in afforestation drives in all Singareni operational zones, aiming to lead by example. Speaking on the day, the CMD urged citizens to actively participate in protecting the environment. 'Environmental protection is not the sole responsibility of the government or public institutions. Every individual must take part. Let us all plant at least three saplings each and encourage our families and communities to do the same,' he said. Highlighting the company's ongoing initiatives, he announced that Singareni has so far planted 5.47 crore saplings across 15,231 hectares, and continues to nurture them as part of its long-term ecological mission.
