KARACHI:
Gold prices in Pakistan surged on Tuesday, reflecting the global trend of rising rates. In the local market, the per tola price of gold jumped by Rs1,900, reaching Rs294,300, according to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA). This followed Monday's rise of Rs200 per tola, which had already set a then-all-time high of Rs292,400.
Globally, gold prices also experienced an upward trend. According to APGJSA, the international price of gold reached $2,815 per ounce (including a $20 premium) after gaining $16 during the day.
"The bullish momentum remains strong," said Adnan Agar, Director of Interactive Commodities. He noted that the international market hit a new all-time high of $2,840 per ounce earlier in the day before settling around $2,828, with a daily low of $2,807.
Agar expects a possible correction when prices approach the $2,850-$2,860 range, though for now, the market maintains strong momentum. Over the past few hours, gold prices have increased by nearly $30, with the market hovering around $2,810 earlier in the evening. The key focus is on Friday's employment data, which could determine the market's next movement.
The dollar fell 0.5%, making gold less expensive for other currency holders. Meanwhile, the Pakistani rupee saw a slight appreciation against the US dollar, rising by 0.03% in the interbank market on Tuesday. By the end of the trading session, the rupee closed at 278.96, marking an increase of 8 paisa compared to the previous day's closing rate of 279.04, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
Additionally, the government of Pakistan raised Rs544.63 billion through the auction of Treasury Bills (T-Bills) and Government of Pakistan Ijarah Sukuk (GIS). The SBP secured Rs452 billion in its latest T-Bill auction, surpassing its target of Rs450 billion, with total bids amounting to Rs918 billion. The cut-off yields increased across all tenures, with the 3-month T-Bill yield rising by 21 basis points to 11.7998%, the 6-month yield up by 10 basis points to 11.5048%, and the 12-month yield climbing by 20 basis points to 11.5898%.
The Pakistan Stock Exchange raised Rs92.63 billion for the Ministry of Finance through the 18th auction of GOP Ijarah Sukuk held on February 4, 2025. The auction received total bids worth Rs256.62 billion. The fixed rental rate for 3-year and 5-year Sukuks remained unchanged at 11.4990% and 11.9900%, respectively, while no bids were received for the 10-year GIS. The variable rental rate for the 3-year and 5-year Sukuks was 11.1001% (-0.79% from the reference rate) and 11.2301% (-0.66% from the reference rate), respectively.

No developed framework yet to deploy large workforce in Belarus

ISLAMABAD: The Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BE&OE) has not developed any framework to assess the viability of deploying large workforce in Belarus, after signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), promising 150,000 jobs for skilled Pakistani workers. So far, there has been no public safety advisory from the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development for Pakistani workers intended to work abroad. Details of the issue revealed that thousands of Pakistani nationals are now caught in a rising human migration crisis across Eastern Europe, using Belarus as a stepping stone to illegally enter Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. The situation has escalated rapidly after migrants, lured by promises of overseas employment, found no real job prospects in Belarus - despite a high-profile agreement signed between Islamabad and Minsk earlier this year. The wave of migration follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's official visit to Belarus in April, during which a MOU was signed, promising 150,000 jobs for skilled Pakistani workers in sectors such as healthcare, IT, construction, and engineering. However, more than two months later, the plan remains entirely unimplemented. According to officials from the BE&OE, no framework has been developed, no licenced overseas employment promoters have been engaged, and no feasibility study has been conducted to assess the viability of deploying such a large workforce. 'There are no official channels or guidelines for sending workers to Belarus. Nothing has materialized since the agreement was signed,' confirmed a senior BE&OE officer, requesting anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. 'In the absence of any structured migration pathway, desperate individuals are turning to illegal routes.' Belarus, which maintains relatively relaxed visa rules for Pakistani nationals, has emerged as a preferred entry point. However, upon arrival, many migrants are met with economic hardship, rising inflation, and language barriers. With few actual job offers and no government-verified recruiters in place, migrants quickly realize they have been misled. The minimum wage of $1,100, initially cited in the bilateral agreement, appears unrealistic in a country where the average monthly salary is between $670 and $700. Resultantly, many migrants attempt illegal crossings into neighbouring countries, including Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, often in the hope of ultimately reaching Germany. Migration experts and policy analysts, including those from the Centre for Migration Research Pakistan (CMRP), are calling on the government to act urgently. Recommendations include launching public awareness campaigns on the risks of irregular migration, engaging with EU authorities to ensure the humane treatment of detained migrants, and enforcing strict action against unlicensed recruiting agents under the Emigration Ordinance, 1979. There is also a growing demand for Pakistan's missions abroad to provide emergency assistance, including temporary shelter, legal aid, and repatriation services. Unless urgent action is taken at both diplomatic and domestic levels, thousands more may be drawn into this growing humanitarian crisis - trapped between unfulfilled promises at home and hardened borders abroad. SBP pumps Rs13.3tr, raises Rs358b

Listen to article The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) injected a record Rs13.33 trillion into the financial system on Friday through two major Open Market Operations (OMOs), signalling its continued effort to manage liquidity and stabilise financial markets. The injection was made through both conventional reverse repo purchases and Shariah-compliant Mudarabah-based instruments. Under the conventional OMO, the SBP injected Rs13.05 trillion, comprising Rs904.25 billion for a 7-day tenor at 11.02% and Rs12.15 trillion for a 14-day tenor at 11.01%. Bids were accepted on a pro-rata basis. The high participation, with total bids at Rs13.31 trillion, reflected strong demand from market participants. In the parallel Shariah-compliant OMO, the central bank injected Rs270 billion. This included Rs120 billion for 7 days at 11.15% and Rs150 billion for 14 days at 11.13%. The higher rates on Islamic OMOs indicated continued premium demand for Shariah-compliant liquidity. Additionally, the SBP raised Rs358 billion in the latest Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIB) auction, exceeding the Rs300 billion target. Investor interest remained strong, with total bids reaching Rs1,129 billion. According to AKD Securities, cut-off yields for shorter tenors increased. The 2-year bond yield rose by 24 basis points to 11.09%, the 3-year by 9bps to 11.14%, and the 5-year by 5bps to 11.44%. In contrast, the 10-year paper yield fell by 5bps to 12.15%. The 15-year bond was accepted at a cut-off yield of 12.45%, the first such result disclosed for this tenor. The rise in shorter-term yields reflected market concerns over near-term inflation and tight liquidity. Meanwhile, the decline in longer-term yields suggested investor confidence in long-term economic stability. The aggressive bidding highlighted strong investor appetite for government securities amid a stable interest rate outlook. The Pakistani rupee also appreciated by 0.05% on Friday. It closed at 282.72 against the US dollar, gaining 15 paisa from the previous day's rate of 282.87. In contrast to global trends, gold prices in Pakistan edged lower on Friday. This came despite bullion gaining nearly 2% internationally, driven by weaker US payroll data and renewed trade tensions that increased safe-haven demand. According to the All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association (APGJSA), the gold price per tola dropped by Rs100 to settle at Rs352,900. The price for 10 grams also fell by Rs86, closing at Rs302,555. This modest drop followed Thursday's steeper Rs2,000 per tola decline, reflecting currency movements and local demand pressure. Internationally, spot gold surged 1.8% to $3,350.67 per ounce as of (15:35 GMT), after rising as much as 2% earlier. The metal was up 0.4% for the week. Adnan Agar, Director at Interactive Commodities Gold, said gold touched an intraday low of $3,381 and a high of $3,455, trading near $3,448. He added that weak US data and tariff concerns linked to President Donald Trump drove the $60 spike. He expected bullish momentum to continue into Monday, with resistance near $3,460–$3,470.

Tariff deal with US to boost exports: Finance ministry

Listen to article The new tariff agreement between Pakistan and the US is expected to enhance market access, strengthen trade flows and boost exports from various sectors, thereby contributing to economic growth, the Ministry of Finance said on Friday. In a press statement, the ministry expressed satisfaction over the successful conclusion of tariff-related discussions with the US, adding that as a result of talks 19% tariffs would be applicable to Pakistan's export goods entering the US market. 'This decision reflects a balanced and forward-looking approach by the US authorities, keeping Pakistan competitive relative to other South and Southeast Asian countries,' it said. 'The Ministry of Finance, in close coordination with relevant stakeholders, believes that the current tariff arrangement presents a significant opportunity to expand Pakistan's footprint in the US market,' the statement said, adding that it was essential for Pakistani exporters and trade bodies to adopt a focused marketing strategy to capitalise on the development. In addition to textile, there was substantial potential for growth in other sectors, it said, stressing that the government was committed to facilitating exporters through policy support, market intelligence and trade promotion initiatives. The ministry expressed hope about further positive engagements and close cooperation with the US in the areas of investment, AI, cryptocurrency, mines and minerals, energy and other emerging sectors.
