Jaguars' Travis Hunter Sits Out Practice 'As a Precaution' With Upper-Body Issue

Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star Travis Hunter was held out of the team's light practice Friday "as a precaution" because of an upper-body injury.
When asked whether Hunter would play in the team's preseason game at New Orleans on Sunday, coach Liam Coen added, "We don't know yet."
Hunter was on the field for the hour-long session and carried a play-calling sheet while following the action closely.
"That's what they're supposed to do when they're hurt," Coen said. "We want them to make sure that they're locked in, getting all the calls, understanding the call and being able to watch and execute it as well in their minds."
Hunter played on offense and defense, totaling 18 snaps, in Jacksonville's preseason opener against Pittsburgh last Saturday. The Heisman Trophy winner also played both ways during a scrimmage Thursday and crashed hard to the ground while defending a deep pass.
Hunter was one of 10 players held out of Jacksonville's practice because of injury, joining right guard Chuma Edoga, right tackle Anton Harrison, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, defensive lineman Maason Smith, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, safety Caleb Ransaw, linebacker Jalen McLeod and cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Montaric Brown.
It's unclear if any of them will play against the Saints, leaving Coen with a tough decision to make regarding playing starters in the second exhibition.
"There's a chance," he said. "We got to go get this injury report and make sure, because I don't really want to do too many, 'You're playing, you're not playing,' that kind of deal.

"If we are putting [QB Trevor Lawrence out there], we got to make sure we're protected, and we have the right guys in front. Same with the runners, things like that. Just making sure that we're not putting people in vulnerable spots because we are injured."

Those numbers were solid and would make the Steelers a team to watch in the AFC if he can replicate them. That being said, there are concerns about Rodgers' ability to hit the ground running with his new team to begin the year. Keeping that in mind, a former NFL defensive back has spoken out with a major warning about Rodgers to Pittsburgh. Domonique Foxworth, a former defensive back and current ESPN analyst, has cautioned that not playing Rodgers during the preseason is a mistake. "Things didn't go great for Aaron Rodgers last year when he sat out the preseason, but he's on a new team with a new offensive line, new receivers. Just everything around him is new," Foxworth said. "I would expect him to want to get a few reps, and of course there's still more time, but the idea that you can miss the offseason program, which he did, and just parachute in and pick this thing up and hit the ground running seems a little bit challenging to me. So I'd love to see him get some time. But I mean, Mike Tomlin kind of knows what he's doing, I guess." Putting him on the field so that the entire offense can gel together could be crucial. It seems that Tomlin has made his decision that Rodgers won't be playing during the preseason. Should he stick with that decision, it will be interesting to see how the Steelers' offense performs in the first couple of weeks to start the season. Johnny Manziel praises Shedeur Sanders' Browns approach after stellar preseason debut: 'Continue to grind'
Johnny Manziel was once in Shedeur Sanders' shoes – a Cleveland Browns quarterback with high expectations and a national spotlight. Manziel was a Browns first-round pick in 2014 with the entire city of Cleveland hoping "Johnny Football" could spring life into a franchise desperate for consistency at the quarterback position. NFL fans know how that ultimately played out for the Browns and Manziel, but the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner has loads of optimism for Sanders, a fifth-round pick, as he embarks on his first season in the league. "I think everything he's done since he's gotten to Cleveland has been exactly what he should be doing," Manziel told Fox News Digital about Sanders, while also discussing his partnership with Sling TV. "Obviously, a crowded quarterback room. I think a lot of people, at least for me, enjoyed watching Shedeur play in college. I also really liked watching [Browns third-round pick] Dillon Gabriel play in college. I think the guy has a lot of talent, a great arm. So, I think for [Sanders], continue to go through this preseason. Try to get better week in and week out, and if they name you the starter, amazing. If you're the [No.] 2, amazing. If you're the [No.] 3, whatever. Sit there and continue to grind, learn the offense, and continue to try to get more comfortable, and good things will happen." While Manziel and others have said before the start of training camp that Sanders could win the job, it's expected that Joe Flacco, the longtime veteran quarterback, will begin the season as the Browns' starter under center. But all the talk around the Browns after their first preseason game last week was about Sanders, as he was named the starter by head coach Kevin Stefanski and played well into the third quarter. Sanders went 14-for-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns, flashing his signature touchdown celebration along the way to a 30-10 victory against the Carolina Panthers. It's a performance like this that has Manziel reminiscing about the NFL Draft back in April, and how Sanders fell into Day 3 and the fifth round before Cleveland scooped him up. "I didn't think there was any way he was getting past Day 2. You're just sitting there and this guy's getting billed as somebody who's getting taken in the first round and this and that. Wild to see, but you get into a position that is in need of a quarterback, right? You have a vet in Joe Flacco, you got two rookies that are in there, and Kenny Pickett. I'm sure they're going into that quarterback room and being like, 'Listen, you guys go out every day and battle for this. We're going to mix up reps, we're going to give somebody something this day and that day.'" Manziel added how he thinks it's funny to see fans clamoring over reports from the Cleveland media about which quarterback threw the most touchdowns or had the best day on the practice field. "In the grand scheme of things, it's all bulls--- until you get to the real game, and real bullets are flying," Manziel said. "I've been having a good laugh seeing the practice statistics pop up." But once again, Manziel knows how much the media can play a part in the perception of a player and a team. While many think about New York, Los Angeles or Boston media when it comes to sports, Manziel explained why he thinks Cleveland is also a tough place to impress. "I think people who have covered that team for years and years and years have dealt with the highs of having high expectations going into a season, and seeing them crumble," he said. "There hasn't been the success there that they want, so of course, it's been extremely frustrating. Of course, it's a tough media place to be in when you're not winning games when you feel like you should be, especially when you have good pieces on the team. "The one thing that I do know about [Sanders], and Deion, knowing him through the years, he's going to be prepared for that. He's going to have the right answers for it. He's going to be able to weather the storm. It's one of those things where you go out and have a nine-, 10-, 11-win season, those questions will start to feel more warm and fuzzy for sure." Sanders is unlikely to follow up his first taste of the NFL with any great performance after suffering an oblique injury at Browns practice this week. Cleveland takes on the Philadelphia Eagles for their second preseason game on Saturday night. Manziel partnered with Sling TV, a subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation, to promote a different way to watch football this season – one that truly taks the consumer into consideration. Being an SEC guy through and through, I think for me, it makes it easy for me to watch whatever I want whenever I want and it's really easy. You don't have to sit there with overhead or anything else going on. For me, I don't think it can be any better."

Where LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier's 2024 QBR ranks among returning SEC quarterbacks
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier takes the reins of the Tigers' offense for the second-straight season heading into 2025. It's expected to be a strong year for quarterbacks in the SEC and Nussmeier is one of several returners with real experience. He stands out in one key statistic. Nussmeier's quarterback rating (QBR) from 2024 is the highest of any returning quarterback in the conference. Nussmeier's 2024 QBR of 79.0 finished fourth among SEC quarterbacks. He finished behind a top three of Ole Miss' Jaxon Dart (84.7), Alabama's Jalen Milroe (82.8) and Georgia's Carson Beck (80.9). Dart, Milroe, and Beck have all moved on. Dart and Milroe are in the NFL, and Beck is at Miami. That leaves Nussmeier as the top returner. The statistic encompasses a wide range of factors, including rushing yards, fumbles, downs, and distance, to measure a quarterback's success. Nussmeier led a strong offensive unit with top targets Kyren Lacy and Mason Taylor, but fell behind on the list due to his lack of rushing prowess. QBR is a fairly predictive stat and Nussmeier's ranking could spell big things for 2025. Ahead of his fifth season at LSU, Nussmeier is touted as one of the best passers in the country. Per BetMGM, he has the second-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy at +900, trailing only Texas quarterback Arch Manning (+600).
