The Narrow Road to The Deep North: Is the mini series based on a true story?
With so many scenes depicting the 1940s and subsequently 1980s in the other timeline of the show, it's led us to wonder what is fact and what is fiction in this new historical drama, and crucially, is the show based on a true story? Well this is everything you need to know.
The new BBC series is an adaptation of the 2013 novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan. The novel won the Booker Prize in 2014 and tells the story of an Australian doctor, Dorrigo Evans, who is haunted by his memories in WWII, including being a prisoner of war in Burma and his long-lost love affair with his uncle's wife.
Richard was inspired by his father's own experience of World War II, including his time being a Japanese prisoner of war. He was also partly inspired to create the character of Dorrigo by the real historical figure Edward 'Weary' Dunlop, who was known for helping to heal men while they were working on the Burma railway construction.
The Burma railway or 'death railway' as it was also known during WWII, and was constructed by Empire of Japan, who used Allied POWs and Asian civilians to create the railway. It earned it's nickname due to the dangerous conditions workers had to endure while working on it.
The actual character of Dorrigo is purely fictional, as is his romance with his uncle's wife Amy. However, Richard did take some inspiration from a story he heard about a Latvian soldier who had been separated from his wife during the War, and after believing she was dead, started a new life and family. Years later the pair ended up meeting again, with the solider's wife also believing him to be dead and having a new family of her own.

BBC local broadcasting 'legend' dies
Former BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Gerry Kersey, who became a listeners' favourite during his 50 years in broadcasting, has died. The 86-year-old, who worked for both the BBC and independent radio, had been ill for some time and died on Friday morning with his wife, Christine, at his side. Paying tribute, Katrina Bunker, Head of BBC Yorkshire, said: "Gerry was a true legend of local broadcasting, starting his career in 1968 as one of the first voices on BBC Radio Sheffield." Away from the microphone, he had a talent for performing in theatre and for art. His paintings featured in exhibitions and he raised money for charity by making and selling Christmas cards featuring his work. In a 2018 interview in the Sheffield Star marking his 50 years in broadcasting, he recalled that in the 1970s he was doing two jobs, handling advertising for local company Stanley Tools and doing radio work. "It became an alarmingly unbalanced life," he told the newspaper. But broadcasting eventually won his heart. "I decided, with my wife's full approval, that although it was only earning £12 a week I would take it on and see what I could do," he said. It turned out well and Gerry became a listeners' favourite, both for the BBC and on independent station Radio Hallam. Ms Bunker said: "In later years he was known for request-based and nostalgia shows and he got loads of letters, emails and calls right up to his last show in 2020. "Wherever you went around the area you would always meet someone who loved Gerry's show. "Off-mic, Gerry was just as much of a gentleman as he was on it, always encouraging , always warm and proud to still be on the radio after 50 years. "He will be sadly missed by all who knew him." Strictly's Anton Du Beke opens up on heartbreak over wife's 'inexplicable' diagnosis
Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke has opened up about his wife's harrowing struggle with endometriosis and its impact on their path to becoming parents. The cherished BBC star married marketing executive Hannah Summers in 2017, having first met at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey in 2012. The pair were delighted to welcome twins George and Henrietta following their wedding, after successful IVF treatment, reports The Mirror. The esteemed dancer confessed his bewilderment at life's cruelty, as he watched Hannah lovingly interact with her nephews, questioning the fairness of their IVF journey. He said: "I knew I wanted to be with her, I saw her with her nephews. She's so kind and so caring, I just couldn't understand the universe." Anton bemoaned the apparent unfairness from above, stating: "And whoever is upstairs, if anyone's upstairs, looking down and going 'you are the most perfect person to have children, but I'm not going to let you have any children because I'm going to give you this'. "And I'm going to say 'you're going to have this endometriosis, and you're going to suffer with this all of your life, chronically, and I'm not going to let you have any children. "I thought that was peculiar, cruel, and inexplicable and unforgivable. And if ever I go up to somewhere and meet this person I would say 'I think you're not OK with decisions like this, this doesn't make any sense to me." Anton has candidly spoken about the difficulties he and his wife Hannah encountered during their IVF journey, which eventually brought them closer together. The couple were blessed as the treatment worked on their first attempt, resulting in the birth of their twins, George and Henrietta, in 2017, with their nuptials taking place later that year. In a heartfelt chat with Giovanna, Anton admitted his previous lack of knowledge about endometriosis and emphasised the importance of increased government funding for women's health services. Reflecting on their ordeal, he shared: "Then we went through the process of IVF, well crying out loud. You girls are extraordinary. As much as I want to get involved, all I can do is hold your hand. It makes me emotional every time I talk about it. The injections, the stress, the anxiety. I have anxiety and stress but it's not my body. "She has these injections and the bruises in the bum, in the thigh, in the stomach. And you're trying to help but what can you do? Whatever you want, tell me and I'll do it but that's all you have and it's horrendous as a man to watch it. "You feel so inadequate and you want to do so much more but I can't do anything. And that's why you girls are so extraordinary, you're extraordinary that you do all this stuff."
