Highest-Level Diplomat Disappearance Since Qin Gang in 2023
Liu's sudden disappearance is the most high-profile vanishing act by a Chinese diplomat since the mysterious fall of former foreign minister Qin Gang in 2023, a protégé of President Xi Jinping, according to the report.
Live Events
Known for the unusual frequency and intensity of his overseas travel, good command of English, confident, and ability to engage spontaneously without pre-prepared talking points, Liu was different from Chinese diplomats in the past, as per the Reuters report.
One diplomat, who met him in late 2023, said that "He knows how to shape Chinese narratives in a way that's engaging and appealing to foreigners," as quoted in the report. While another diplomat who met his aides around that time said they were very confident that he would soon be promoted to foreign minister, as reported by Reuters.

Liu's Career Spanned Diplomacy and Anti-Corruption Work
Liu was born in Jilin province in northeast China and studied English at Beijing Foreign Studies University before continuing to Oxford University to study international relations, according to the report. He began his foreign ministry career in China as a translator and subsequently worked in its mission in the UK, and as ambassador to Indonesia and the Philippines, as per the Reuters report.
Unlike other Chinese diplomat, he served two successive postings in China's anti-corruption bureaucracy between 2015 and 2018, when he helped track down corrupt officials who fled overseas, as reported by Reuters.
Since 2022, Liu had headed the Communist Party's International Department, which oversees the management with foreign political parties, according to the report.

Analysts Expected Liu to Succeed Wang Yi
Liu was the most frequently mentioned potential replacement for veteran diplomat Wang Yi as foreign minister according to many diplomats and analysts, as per Reuters. He traveled on a high-profile 2024 trip to the United States, where he met with a variety of senior officials, including then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken, according to the report.
However, he was not promoted to the role at a recent annual government reshuffle, as per the report. Wen-Ti Sung, a fellow at the Atlantic Council's Global China Hub, said that, "If true, Liu Jianchao's downfall will lead to further power vacuum at the top of China's foreign affairs portfolio," adding, "It removes a frontrunner to succeed Wang Yi and deprives China of a potential next steward for China's foreign policy," as quoted by Reuters.

Power of literature has no parallel: Dean

Mangaluru: The power of literature has no parallel, said Mahaling Bhat, dean, Language Department at St Aloysius (Deemed University). He was speaking during the inauguration of a book exhibition organised by Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, in collaboration with Konkani Institute and Vision Konkani of St Aloysius (Deemed University) on Tuesday, and marks the centenary celebration of Konkani litterateur VJP Saldanha, and is part of a two-day national seminar. Dr Bhat emphasised India's rich linguistic and literary heritage, noting that while many countries have a single dominant language, India boasts thousands of languages, literatures, and cultures with over two millennia of history. "Beyond written books, India's oral literary traditions are profound. Recognizing and publishing quality literature in 24 languages, and translating works across these languages, is no easy task. Yet, Sahitya Akademi has been doing this for decades," he said. He added that reading Sahitya Akademi's series on Indian literary pioneers offers insights into historical social conditions, underscoring literature's unparalleled influence. The exhibition was inaugurated with opening remarks from poet Melvyn Rodrigues, convener, Konkani Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, who delivered the introductory address. The event was moderated by HM Pernal, a member of the Konkani Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. The book exhibition and sale, running from Aug 12 to 14 at the college, is open from 10 am. Over 350 titles in six languages Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, English, Hindi, and Marathi are available for sale. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Govt school gets approval for high school after long wait

Mangaluru: The long-pending demand of Kavu Government School in Puttur to be upgraded to a high school has finally been met, with the government granting approval for admissions from the next academic year. The DK ZP Government Model Upgraded Higher Primary School, Kavu , a century-old institution once on the brink of closure, received a new lease of life 12 years ago, when it was adopted by entrepreneur and politician Kavu Hemanath Shetty. Increased enrolment since then kept the dream of a high school section alive. Shetty recalled that in 2017-18, they had started Class IX without formal permission from the education department, hoping for official approval. "Unfortunately, permission did not come through, and after one year we had to shift students to other schools for SSLC. Now, with the government's nod, we expect at least 60 admissions for Class IX next academic year," he said. The government has sanctioned the high school on the condition that it be run with local funds for at least three years by the SDMC or villagers. "We are ready for it, and construction of new classrooms is in progress," Shetty said, adding that the school now has the highest admissions among rural government schools under Puttur BEO limits, despite competition from nearby private institutions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally Undo Since introducing LKG and UKG in 2016, the school has grown from 140 students to over 450.
