ThunderBlades edge Lions, begin campaign on a winning note

The Hindu3 days ago

'Let's make some noise!' It was the mantra for Kolkata ThunderBlades, the latest entrant to the Ultimate Table Tennis bandwagon.
The franchise owners left no stone unturned in getting a fan army in the stands and the paddlers responded as they edged past Chennai Lions to start off their sojourn on a winning note.
Setting the tone
Ankur Bhattacharjee blanked the fancied Kirill Gerassimenko 3-0 to set the tone before Adriana Diaz, the Puerto Rican world No. 17, marked her return to UTT after seven years by winning the deciding game of the tie against former national champion Poymantee Baisya to hand ThunderBlades an 8-7 win.
Ankur was the pick of the day's proceedings.
After overpowering the world No. 55 in the opening game, the second game witnessed a spree of rallies with Gerassimenko trying to take control.
Ankur's class was displayed in the 23-shot rally at 8-7 in the second game when the Indian finished it off with a forehand top-spin.
In the third game, the backhand jab followed by a robust backhand winner at 9-7 left Gerassimenko stunned.
Even though Fan Siqi brought parity to the tie with a clean slate against Selenadeepthi Selvakumar, the last game that Ankur and Diaz snatched in the mixed doubles against Payas Jain and Fan proved to be crucial.
Jain also had an impressive UTT debut as he stretched Quadri to the hilt before the African veteran claimed a narrow win.
The results: Kolkata ThunderBlades bt Stanley's Chennai Lions 8-7 (Ankur Bhattacharjee bt Kirill Gerassimenko 11-4, 11-10, 11-7; Selenadeepthi Selvakumar lost to Fan Siqi 8-11, 10-11, 6-11; Ankur & Adriana Diaz lost to Payas Jain & Fan 6-11, 4-11, 11-8; Quadri Aruna bt Payas Jain 11-3, 8-11, 11-9; Adriana bt Poymantee Baisya 11-6, 7-11, 11-6).

Women's hockey team to open Asia Cup 2025 campaign against Thailand

New Delhi: The Indian women's hockey team is set to kick off its campaign in the Women's Asia Cup 2025 against Thailand on September 5, 2025, at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Field Hockey Field, the 2022 Asian Games hockey venue, in Hangzhou, China. The Indian team has been placed in Pool B, alongside defending Asia Cup champions Japan, Thailand, and Singapore, while Pool A consists of hosts China, Korea, Malaysia, and Chinese Taipei. The tournament is set to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 5 to 14, 2025. Team India, which claimed the bronze medal in the previous edition, will be eyeing the top podium finish this time. A victory not only brings continental glory but also guarantees a direct qualification to the 2026 Women's FIH Hockey World Cup, as the Asia Cup champions earn an automatic berth in the prestigious quadrennial event. Speaking on the tournament, India captain Salima Tete said, 'We are excited to begin our campaign in the Women's Asia Cup. Being placed in Pool B alongside defending champions Japan will test our skills and character from the very start. 'However, facing them in the pool stage will be a great opportunity to measure ourselves early in the tournament. Our focus will be on playing smart, disciplined hockey and taking it one match at a time. The ultimate goal is to lift the trophy and earn a direct spot in the 2026 Women's FIH Hockey World Cup,' she added. Echoing Salima's sentiments, vice-captain Navneet Kaur said, 'It will be a challenging tournament with Asia's top teams competing with each other, but we see it as a chance to bring out our best right from the first whistle. We've been training with intensity and purpose, and we will aim to execute our plans on the field during the tournament. Playing against Japan in the group stage gives us an early look at high-pressure hockey, which can only help us grow stronger as a unit. We're determined to make this Asia Cup campaign count and make the country proud,' she said.

"Can't Believe Virat Kohli Knew...": RCB's Celebrations Amid Stampede Row Heats Up

Royal Challengers Bengaluru's celebrations of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 triumph were marred by the tragic stampede episode outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, where at least 11 people lost their lives while several others were injured. The police and authorities failed to control fans, who turned up in huge numbers just to get a glimpse of the players. However, what was shocking for many was the fact that the felicitation ceremony inside the stadium continued despite the stampede outside. Some people even criticised the franchise RCB, and Virat Kohli for the insensitive act of continuing the felicitations despite knowing that certain fans had lost their lives in the stampede. Though Kohli later took to social media to share his condolences, the fact that the felicitation wasn't immediately ended left many infuriated. Former India cricketer Atul Wassan, however, isn't on board with the theory that Virat knew about the tragedy, yet decided to go ahead with the ceremony. "I cannot believe in a million years that Virat Kohli knew that people were dying outside and the felicitation was going inside," Wassan said in a chat with ANI. The former India cricketer, however, said that the RCB management and the politicians would've known about the tragic incident, but not Kohli. "The politicians, I can believe, because they're ruthless, thick-skinned and so is the corporate, which is the RCB franchise. The franchisees don't care because they have to show the balance sheets, and they have to show revenue. They would have known maybe. It was a lack of communication. By the time Virat and the players would have got to know, they didn't have any say in it. If Virat had known, he would have immediately walked out. I cannot believe that Virat knew and this has happened," he added. #WATCH | Gurugram, Haryana: On the stampede outside Bengaluru's M. "My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tragic events at the Chinnaswamy Stadium today," AB de Villiers posted on Instagram. Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that 11 people died in the incident while 33 others were injured.
