Special heritage run held through Mangaluru city landmarks

Time of India6 hours ago
Mangaluru: The Mangalore Runners Club turned their regular Sunday group run into a memorable cultural experience with a special Mangalore Heritage Run covering 8km through the city's most historically significant spots.
Over 100 members, many dressed in vibrant cultural attire, began and ended the run at the Kanara Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI). The route passed iconic landmarks including the Zeenath Baksh Masjid, India's oldest active mosque, the Old Bunder Spice Market, Vartak Vilas Palace, the Flower Market at Car Street, Ideal Ice Cream, Lady Goschen Hospital, Rosario Church, and Albuquerque Tiles Factory, one of the earliest and still-functioning Mangaluru tile factories whose signature red tiles are famed across India and beyond.
The route also included the Old DC Office, a stately colonial-era building that once served as the administrative hub of the British govt in Dakshina Kannada.
At several stops, members shared fascinating historical snippets, bringing Mangaluru's layered past to life. The run concluded with a guided visit to KCCI's Gallery of Trade History of Bunder by architect Niren Jain, who designed the space to capture the story of Mangaluru's historic cosmopolitan port through curated visuals and restored architecture.

The group was warmly welcomed by Anand G Pai, president of KCCI, and Aditya Padmanabha Pai, secretary of KCCI. Anand Pai praised the initiative for weaving fitness and culture into a single event, noting that it beautifully highlights why engaging with our heritage helps build a stronger community.
The city's traffic police ensured safe passage for the runners, and the morning concluded with a traditional Mangalurean breakfast. "This was not just a run, but a way to celebrate our city's heritage together as a club," said Ramesh Babu from MRC, who conceptualised and spearheaded the event.

Govt may amend rules to auction excise licences, wine merchants up in arms

Bengaluru: Industry stakeholders and the excise department are again at loggerheads, this time over the department's move to amend rules to facilitate auctioning of certain licences. Excise minister RB Timmapur said preparations are under way for the auction and that it is likely be completed in Sept. But industry stakeholders are sceptical. They say the number of licences that can be auctioned is significantly lower than the number listed by the department. The Federation of Wine Merchants' Associations of Karnataka says licences that the excise department considers unrenewed for about 30-35 years, and those that are pending approval, have been listed for auction. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru The federation said the list has a total 241 licences, including 136 under the CL-2 category (retail liquor shops) and 105 under CL-9 (bars). However, 463 unrenewed licences were reportedly allotted to Mysore Sales International Ltd (MSIL) in 2009 and hence cannot be auctioned now. Additionally, the federation contented that a total of 260 CL-2 and 216 CL-9 licences were validated following the allocation to MSIL till March 31. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like With temperatures hitting 95°F, this is the mini air conditioner everyone's buying in the U.S News of the Discovery Undo It maintained that only 42 licences of the 241 listed licences are pending renewal as 199 were from before 2008-09 when unrenewed licences were given to MSIL. Office-bearers of the federation met chief minister Siddaramaiah during his visit to Delhi last week and submitted an appeal against the department's decision to auction licences. Timmapur has said that he has asked officials to consider legal issues raised by the federation. "The rules may have to be amended to auction licences," he said, adding that merchants may be worried about the effect of new licence approvals on their businesses. A senior official told TOI that details of the auctioning process are yet to be decided. "The available licences will be auctioned only after legal hurdles are cleared," the official said, adding that the merchants' interpretation is inaccurate. The decision to auction licences comes in the backdrop of low liquor sales in the state compared to last year. The excise department said sales of beer fell by 20.4% between April 1 and July 30 this year, compared to the same period last year. Sales of Indian-made liquor (IML) also fell, but at 2% the decrease wasn't as dramatic. Interestingly, revenue for the period rose by 12.2% in 2025 compared to 2024. The department had increased additional excise duty on IML in May and excise duty on beer in Jan. Excise duty on beer now stands at 200% from the earlier 195%. However, the other component of paying Rs 130 per bulk litre (whichever is higher) was dropped. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Uttam pushes for fast-tracking Devadula project, calls Jawahar LIS a game changer

Hyderabad: Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Sunday said the J Chokka Rao Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme (JCRDLIS) would be a lifeline for upland, drought-prone regions of Telangana and directed officials to complete it at the earliest. Reviewing the project after visiting the Sammakka Sarakka barrage and the off-take point in Gangaram village, Kannaigudem mandal of Mulugu district, he said JCRDLIS is designed to irrigate 5.57 lakh acres across Hanamkonda, Warangal, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Jangaon, Yadadri, Suryapet, and Siddipet districts. With a total lift of 469 metres and utilisation of 38.16 TMC over 170 pumping days annually, the project is being executed in three phases. It includes major pump houses, rising and delivery mains, balancing reservoirs, and an extensive canal network to deliver water to high-elevation command areas. You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad Uttam said the revised project cost was 18,500 crore, of which 14,168 crore had been spent. An additional 4,331 crore was urgently required to clear contractor dues, complete delivery main encasement works, and finish pending land acquisition. Once completed, JCRDLIS would stabilise existing ayacut, provide drinking water to rural habitations, improve crop yields, and reduce migration from water-scarce areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Chile: Unsold Sofas at Bargain Prices (Prices May Surprise You) Sofas | Search Ads Search Now Undo Earlier in the day, Reddy participated in the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Jawahar Lift Irrigation Scheme (LIS) at Vangaveedu in Madhira mandal, terming it a game changer for the Madhira constituency. Tenders had been finalised and the project would be completed within a year to provide irrigation to 33,000 acres. Announcing ayacut statistics, Uttam said the scheme will serve three major segments — Nidhanapuram major (13,000 acres), Jamalapuram major (10,000 acres), and Mailavaram major (5,000 acres). Mandal-wise, 12 villages in Madhira mandal would receive water for 13,219 acres and 23 villages in Yerrupalem mandal for 19,800 acres — totalling 35 villages with 33,025 acres. Designed in line with the State's irrigation policy of delivering maximum water at minimal cost, Jawahar LIS, he said, would boost agricultural productivity and serve as a model project for other upland areas. Turning to broader water policy, Uttam reiterated Telangana's fight for its rightful 71 per cent share of Krishna river waters. He accused the previous BRS government of accepting only 34 per cent, calling it a grave injustice to the state. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
