The Indian Railways has begun a full upgradation of its Passenger Reservation System (PRS), which at present books around 25,000 tickets per minute, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.In a written reply, Vaishnaw said capacity enhancement and technological upgradation form a continuous process within the Railways. 'Presently, the booking capacity of the current PRS is about 25,000 tickets per minute,' he said.The minister said the upgradation covers replacement and improvement of hardware, software, network equipment, security infrastructure and functionalities using new technology. 'The new system is designed for more than four times the present capacity,' he said.The project has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹182 crore.Vaishnaw also updated the House on measures taken in booking web applications. He said the Railways recently launched the RailOne mobile app, which allows passengers to book both reserved and unreserved tickets.'This, in effect, brings the PRS facility to the passengers' palms,' Vaishnaw said.

The government has also highlighted that the Bill aims at the 'greater good' for the society. According to a PTI report, the Centre has estimated that around 45 crore people lose close to Rs 20,000 crore every year in online real money gaming. Meanwhile, the online gaming industry has warned that the proposed Bill banning all real money games could kill over two lakh jobs, shut down 400 companies, and hurt India's digital innovation. Industry bodies said the sector, valued at ₹2 lakh crore with ₹31,000 crore revenue and ₹20,000 crore in taxes, faces a 'death knell' if the law is passed. On Wednesday, Vaishnaw said online money gaming has become a bigger issue than drugs, adding that many youngsters have died by suicide after losing their savings in such games.

How new gaming laws will affect the industry that's raking in billions
The Lok Sabha has cleared the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, prohibiting all real-money games in India. The government claims the law is designed to control addiction, cheating, and money laundering associated with money gaming, as well as support the development of legitimate esports and game billThe big change: A national ban on money-stakes games, such as betting and fantasy games. Of these, more than 155 million played real-money games such as fantasy games, rummy, poker, and other games, which was 10 per cent more than the year before. A new 28 per cent GST on money invested in transaction-dependent gaming platforms and TDS on winnings have pushed some gamers to illegal and offshore sites that were active and advertised in 2024. These sites offer more returns but are risky as they are not governed by rules or legal cover. However, India's online gaming universe is expected to grow to 517 million by 2025. And further expand at a rate of five to six per cent annually by gaming industry has grown in revenue every year. Revenues rose from Rs 222 billion in 2022 to Rs 236 billion in 2023. It fell slightly to Rs 232 billion in 2024 because of taxes and regulations. The market is likely to bounce back well, touching Rs 260 billion in 2025 and around Rs 316 billion in to the EY report, the online gaming segment earned Rs 218 billion in 2024 as subscription income. Transaction-based gaming earnings through online gaming increased from Rs 159 billion in 2022 to Rs 190 billion in 2023, but decreased to Rs 179 billion in 2024. In esports and casual gaming in 2022, the revenues were just Rs 37 billion. By 2024, it was Rs 53 revenue from transaction-based gaming is much more than from esports and casual gaming, it is growing. And now this ban will give more push to esports and casual gaming revenue. The EY report also said that the esports and casual gaming segment is projected to expand at a faster pace, with a 16 per cent compound annual growth rate, while the transaction-based segment is expected to grow at a slower pace, at nine per transactions on online games remained largely stable in terms of value in April–July 2025, averaging around Rs 10,000 crore each month. However, transaction volumes showed a visible dip, falling from 50.5 crore transactions in April to 33.3 crore in June, before slightly recovering to 35.1 crore in July. While the overall money spent on online gaming remained at the same level for four months, the number of transactions declined.- Ends

Discontinuing paid games, free titles like Ludo to stay: Zupee
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI) Gaming platform Zupee on Thursday said it is discontinuing its paid games in view of the Online Gaming Bill that was passed by the Parliament. However, Zupee's free titles like Ludo Supreme, Ludo Turbo, Snakes & Ladders, and Trump Card Mania will continue to be available for all users, the company said in a statement. 'Zupee remains fully operational and our players can continue to enjoy their favourite games on the platform. In line with the new Online Gaming Bill 2025, we are discontinuing paid games," a Zupee spokesperson said. Parliament on Thursday passed a bill to ban all forms of online money games and promote eSports and online social gaming, with the Rajya Sabha approving it without debate amid din. Piloting The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 in the Upper House, Minister of Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said the legislation will promote two-thirds of the online gaming segment. The bill, he said, will ban online money games, which have become a big problem for society, especially middle-class youth. The bill also seeks to prohibit advertisements related to online money games, as well as bars banks and financial institutions from facilitating or transferring funds for any of such games.
