On what should have been a jubilant day for Bengaluru, the atmosphere outside the iconic Chinnaswamy Stadium turned harrowing. A celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first Indian Premier League (IPL) title quickly spiraled into a nightmare. As the victorious team arrived in a bus on Wednesday evening, thousands of fans had gathered, waving team flags and chanting in euphoria. But the joy was short-lived — at least seven people were killed in a stampede that followed, as per TV reports. The visuals were chilling. A police officer was seen carrying a limp body to an ambulance. Another victim lay unconscious on the road as bystanders scrambled to help. A moment meant to honour sporting glory ended in trauma and loss, with many pointing to crowd mismanagement and a lack of preparedness for such a massive turnout.Sadly, this is not an isolated tragedy.Just three months ago, on February 15, New Delhi Railway Station witnessed a similar descent into chaos. Around 10 pm, platforms 13 and 14 were packed with more than 1,500 general ticket holders trying to board trains like the Prayagraj Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani. Overwhelming congestion, fainting spells, and panic led to a stampede-like situation that claimed 18 lives.Initial reports labelled it a stampede. The Railways later claimed it was 'only overcrowding.' But for families who lost loved ones in the crush of humanity, the terminology is cold comfort. Investigations pointed to a surge linked to the upcoming Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj — a pilgrimage known to draw tens of millions — but failed to explain how basic crowd management failed at one of India's busiest stations. And when it comes to the Maha Kumbh, tragedy has been a recurring visitor. In January 2025, during the Mauni Amavasya holy dip at the Sangam, a broken barricade on the overcrowded Akhara route triggered a deadly stampede. In the early hours between 1 and 2 AM, panic spread like wildfire. By the time order was restored, 30 were dead and over 60 injured. Despite advisories and emergency preparations, the weight of expectations—and people—proved too much once again. In July 2024, an even graver disaster unfolded in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district. After a religious gathering addressed by preacher Saakar Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba, at least 116 people — mostly women and children — were crushed to death in a stampede. Survivors recounted a terrifying mix of poor infrastructure, blocked exits, and absolute pandemonium as the crowd surged, some seeking blessings, others simply trying to leave. In January 2022, at least 12 people died in a stampede at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir after a huge crowd tried to enter the narrow shrine premises.Back in October 2013, around 115 devotees were killed and over a hundred injured at the Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh during Navratri celebrations, when more than 150,000 people converged on the site.In February 2013, 36 pilgrims, mostly women, died in a stampede on the busiest day of the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh. The chaos began at the Allahabad railway station amid massive crowds. The list goes on...Across these incidents, a pattern emerges: inadequate planning, lack of exit routes, broken barricades, absent or ineffective crowd control, and above all, a failure to respect the scale of public emotion that drives thousands — sometimes lakhs — to congregate.Whether it's a cricket celebration, a railway rush, or a religious ritual, India continues to grapple with a grim truth — joy and devotion can turn deadly in the absence of foresight. Each tragedy leaves behind grieving families, unanswered questions, and a promise from authorities to investigate and improve.

Shubman Gill likely to sit out of Asia Cup despite having Gambhir and Agarkar as fans, claims report: 'He doesn't fit'

Newly-appointed India Test captain Shubman Gill might not make india's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup despite enjoying a solid run in this year's Indian Premier League, which was followed by a red-hot run in the five-Test series in England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to end the drama surrounding India's squad for the ACC Asia Cup that is set to take place in the UAE next month. The board, after all, confirmed the timing for Tuesday's press conference, which will get underway at 1.30 pm IST and will be attended by captain Suryakumar Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, on Monday. There's a big question mark over Shubman Gill's participation in next month's event. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gill, recently appointed India Test captain, hasn't been a regular member of India's T20 setup in recent months. The 25-year-old, however, had an excellent Indian Premier League season with the bat and a red-hot run in the recent five-match Test series in England, making it tough for the selectors to overlook him for next month's assignment – where India could potentially face arch-rivals Pakistan thrice. Difficult to drop Sanju, Abhishek and other India T20 regulars According to a report on The Times of India, both head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Agarkar are 'huge fans' of Gill's batting but even that might not be enough for him to find a place in the T20I team that already has a settled look in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup. Especially with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma forming a successful opening pair and Tilak Varma, skipper Surya and Hardik Pandya coming in next. 'Gill is a terrific batsman, all the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir are huge fans of his batting, and he is rated almost as highly as Virat Kohli in India's cricket circles in terms of potential. However, he doesn't fit into the T20 scheme of things right now. 'Presently, the idea is to persist with 'keeper-bat Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as openers, with Tilak Varma coming in at No. 3 and skipper Suryakumar at No. 4. If you see, Abhishek and Varma are rated as the No. 1 and No. 2 batters in T20Is in the ICC rankings currently. How can you drop them?' a BCCI source told the newspaper. Team India have enjoyed a dominant run in the shortest format, winning 28 out of 31 games since the start of last year – including a couple of Super Over wins – and losing just three. And it's been the aforementioned combination that has been at the heart of India's batting following India's victory at the T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma's leadership last year.

Sanju Samson launches Kochi Blue Tigers website ahead of KCL season 2

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], August 18 (ANI): Indian cricketer Sanju Samson launched the website of Kochi Blue Tigers at Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. He is also representing the team in the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) season 2. The KCL will take place from August 21 to September 7. Samson will serve as the vice-captain of Kochi Blue Tigers and could get some much-needed match practice ahead of the Asia Cup starting from September 9 onwards in the UAE, with India's campaign opener taking place against the UAE on September speaking at the launch, believed that after IPL, there were no competitive tournaments and events like KCL would help with the preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup later this year. 'After IPL, there were no competitive tournaments. When such tournaments as KCL happen, it would help with the preparation for the Asia Cup. We have recruited a good combination. I think it is a good preparation to spend this much to recruit a balanced team. For the last 10-14 days, the team has been practising with the captain and me, and we can understand the positions," Samson said. Following last year's T20 WC, Samson found a new lease of life as an opener for the Indian side alongside Abhishek Sharma. Since then, in 31 T20S and 30 innings, he has scored 908 runs at an average of 33.62, with a strike rate of 157.09, with three centuries and three will be Samson's first competitive appearance since the conclusion of a disappointing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, in which he scored 285 runs in nine matches at an average of 35.62 and a strike rate of over 140, with a half-century to his Kochi squad for Season 2 features a balanced mix of youth and experience. Veteran cricketer KJ Rakesh, the oldest player in the league, and young talent Jobin Joby are part of the line-up. The team also includes Akhil KG, Alfi Francis John, Muhammed Ashik, Afrad N, Vipul Shakti, Muhammed Shanu, Ajeesh K, Jerin PS, Nikhil Thottath, Akhin Sathar, Aasif KM, and Vinoop Manoharan. (ANI)
