'We're an American family in Europe and one breakfast habit disgusts us'
An American mum living in Spain has shared the one thing she can't get onboard with after living in Europe for two years, and it has to do with what people eat for breakfast.
Meg James, a wife and mum of two young boys, is an American woman who moved across the Atlantic to Madrid in 2023.
She has since taken to Instagram to share the family's day-to-day life as they continue to adapt to life in a new country. However, one of the biggest hurdles they have found as they've travelled around the continent is the breakfast options, reports The Mirror.
"One thing that's a hard NO for this American family when travelling through Europe," they wrote at the start of the video, where her two sons are seen walking on a walking belt at an airport.
The video then cut to a breakfast buffet at what appeared to be at a hotel, where the video panned over plates of cheese and sliced meat.
"Cold cuts for breakfast," they then wrote on the video along with a nauseated emoji.
They went on to explain in the caption of the video: "We've moved to Spain and adapted to all types of delicious new foods. But one thing you can't talk me out of: Lunch meat for breakfast is a no."
While Meg didn't explain her reasoning for not wanting to have cold cuts for her breakfast, she wasn't alone in thinking it was 'wrong'.
"As an European I gotta agree," one viewer wrote in the comment section of the video.
"So what do you put on your bread in the morning?" another viewer asked, to which the mum replied: "Tomato, olive oil and salt. We live in Spain."
"As an American living abroad and spent 2 months in Spain, Spanish food kinda sucks overall," a third person wrote.
However, many people also thoughts Meg's way of thinking was wrong, as they couldn't understand why it was 'weird' to have cheese and ham with your breakfast.
One viewer wrote: "Cheese and ham is not 'lunch meat,' this is literally breakfast food."
"I mean I agree it's not for me either but you're aware the rest of the world is not here to cater to just you?" another person wrote, while a third person said: "Americans criticizing other countries food. Satire in itself."
"You people think McDonald's is a restaurant. You really shouldn't criticise any other country's food," wrote a fourth viewer.
