Alleged co-conspirator in Mumbai terror attacks lands in India after being extradited from US
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, landed in New Delhi on Thursday, two police officials with knowledge of his movements told CNN Thursday. He faces trial in India after the US approved his extradition following years of legal wrangling over the case.
India accuses Rana of conspiring to carry out one of the country's deadliest attacks, when 10 Pakistani men associated with the terror group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba killed more than 160 people during a four-day rampage through Mumbai that began on November 26, 2008.
That date is etched in the memory of the nation and is often referred to as India's 9/11.
The attackers traveled to Mumbai by boat from the Pakistani port city of Karachi, hijacking a fishing trawler and killing its five crew members along the way. The men then docked at the waterfront near the iconic Gateway of India monument and split into at least three groups to carry out the attacks, according to police.
Using automatic weapons and grenades, they targeted the city's largest train terminal, the luxury Taj Mahal Palace and the Oberoi Trident hotels, the popular Leopold restaurant, a Jewish community center, and a hospital.
Nine of the 10 terrorists were killed by police during a cat-and-mouse chase across the city. The lone surviving gunman, Ajmal Kasab, was executed in 2012.
Rana, who lived in the US at the time, is accused by New Delhi of conspiring with the terrorists and proving them with information required to carry out their attack. He previously denied similar accusations in a US court.
India's federal investigative agency has charged Rana with several crimes, including attempting to wage war, murder and forgery. If found guilty, the 64-year-old could face the death penalty.
On Thursday, the country's National Investigation Agency confirmed Rana's extradition, writing in a statement that he was sent to India after he exhausted all legal avenues to stay in the US.
In 2011, a US court acquitted Rana of conspiracy to provide material to support the Mumbai attackers, but he was found guilty of two other charges, including providing material support to Lashkar-e-Tayyiba.
He was serving a 14-year sentence in a Los Angeles jail for those charges when his extradition was approved earlier this week.
India's foreign ministry on Wednesday said the US Supreme Court had rejected Rana's plea to stay his extradition, but did not answer further questions about the case.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's embrace of unchristian Christian nationalism
Pete Hegseth, widely considered the least qualified Defense secretary in American history, is hardly anyone's version of the ideal Christian husband and father. Only 45 years old, he's been married three times. His first marriage — to his high school sweetheart — lasted a mere four years, deteriorating after Hegseth admitted to multiple extramarital affairs. A couple of years later, he married his second wife, with whom he had three children. During that marriage, he fathered a child with a Fox News producer who eventually became his third wife. He paid off a woman who accused him of sexual assault (he denies the assault). He routinely passed out drunk at family gatherings and misbehaved in public when inebriated, according to numerous witnesses. His own mother once accused him of being 'an abuser of women,' though she later retracted her claims when Hegseth was facing Senate confirmation. Still, the Senate's Republican majority, cowed by President Trump, confirmed his appointment. Hegseth has two qualities that Trump prizes above all others. He is blindly loyal to the president, and he looks good on TV. After his installation, Hegseth proceeded to fire top military brass who happened to be Black or women or both. He has restored the names of Confederate generals to Army bases (Bragg and Benning). His petty 'anti-woke' crusade led him to strip the name of the assassinated gay rights leader Harvey Milk, a former Naval officer who served honorably, from a Navy ship. And he has considered doing the same to a ship named in honor of the abolitionist and Civil War hero Harriet Tubman. He has said that women do not belong in combat roles, and has kicked out transgender soldiers, cruelly stripping them of the pensions they earned for their service. In March, he shared classified information about an impending American airstrike in Yemen on an unsecured Signal group chat that included his wife, on purpose, and the editor of the Atlantic, by accident. He is, in short, the least serious man ever to lead this nation's armed forces. As if all that weren't dispiriting enough, Hegseth is now in bed (metaphorically) with a crusading Christian nationalist. Earlier this month, Hegseth made waves when he reposted on social media a CNN interview with Douglas Wilson, the pastor and theocrat who is working hard to turn the clock back on the rights of every American who is not white, Christian and male. In the interview, Wilson expounded on his patriarchal, misogynistic, authoritarian and homophobic views. Women, he said, should serve as 'chief executive of the home' and should not have the right to vote. (Their men can do that for them.) Gay marriage and gay sex should be outlawed once again. 'We know that sodomy is worse than slavery by how God responds to it,' he told CNN's Pamela Brown. (Slavery is 'unbiblical,' he avowed, though he did bizarrely defend it once, writing in 1990 a pamphlet that 'slavery produced in the South a genuine affection between the races that we believe we can say has never existed in any nation before the War or since.') When a new outpost of his church opened in Washington, D.C ., in July, Hegseth and his family were among the worshippers. CNN described Hegseth's presence as 'a major achievement' for Wilson. 'All of Christ for All of Life,' wrote Hegseth as he endorsed and reposted the interview. That is the motto of Wilson's expanding universe, which includes his Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho, the center of his Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches, a network of more than 100 churches on four continents, parochial schools, a college, a publishing house and media platforms. 'All of Christ for All of Life' is a shorthand for the belief that Christian doctrines should shape every part of life — including government, culture and education. Wilson is a prolific author of books with titles such as 'Her Hand in Marriage,' 'Federal Husband,' and 'Reforming Marriage.' His book 'Fidelity' teaches 'what it means to be a one-woman man.' Doubtful it has crossed Hegseth's desk. 'God hates divorce,' writes Wilson in one of his books. Given the way sexual pleasure is celebrated in the Old and New Testaments, Wilson has a peculiarly dim view of sex. I mean, how many weddings have been graced with recitations from the Song of Solomon, with its thinly disguised allusions to pleasurable sexual intimacy? ('Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.') Wilson's world is considerably less sensual. 'A man penetrates, conquers, colonizes, plants,' he writes in 'Fidelity.' 'A woman receives, surrenders, accepts.' Mutual sexual pleasure seems out of the question: 'The sexual act cannot be made into an egalitarian pleasuring party.' Ugh. There is nothing particularly new here; Wilson's ideology is just another version of patriarchal figures using religion to fight back against the equality movements of the late 19th and 20th centuries. They are basically the hatemongers of the Westboro Baptist Church dressed up in respectable clothing. 'Some people may conflate Christian nationalism and Christianity because they both use the symbols and language of Christianity, such as a Bible, a cross and worship songs,' says the group Christians Against Christian Nationalism on its website. 'But Christian nationalism uses the veneer of Christianity to advance its own aims — to point to a political figure, party or ideology instead of Jesus.' What you have in people like Hegseth and Wilson are authoritarian men who hide behind their religion to execute the most unchristian of agendas. Ex-AOC youth organizer Iman Abdul busted for urging 'attack' on Jewish students 'grew up in a mansion,' classmate says
The self-described 'youth organizer' for 'Squad' Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who allegedly urged a hate-filled 'attack' on Jewish students at a Brooklyn public high school, was herself a graduate of the school and a popular teen who was voted 'biggest flirt,' a classmate told The Post. She was one of the popular students and definitely had a good time there,' Alina Bernstern said of Iman Abdul, a fellow 2016 alum of Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences in Manhattan Beach, adding that Abdul took part in the school's annual SING! musical show and 'grew up in a mansion.' 'She didn't show any kind of radical tendencies back then,' recalled Bernstein, who took an elective on social justice with Abdul. I'm Israeli. The world must stop our government's genocide in Gaza while we still can.
Knowing my own society is committing these crimes has shattered everything I thought I knew about myself, about my country, about humanity. The international community has failed us all. A few years ago, at a meeting of Israeli and Palestinian peace activists, we sat on the grass trying to brainstorm new initiatives. Some Palestinians I had just met proposed, sarcastically, to form a Palestinian 'reservation' that would preserve their culture, along the lines of Indigenous reservations in North America. As a Jewish Israeli who hadn't fully grasped the depth of injustice baked into Zionism's premise of Jewish supremacy, I was horrified. I couldn't believe their imagination had taken them so far. Now, looking back, I see it was no joke. It was a warning. What I once found unthinkable is quickly becoming our reality. The combination of genocide in the Gaza Strip, accelerated ethnic cleansing in the West Bank and demolition of entire Bedouin villages within Israel makes it clear: There is a coherent logic behind the actions of the Israeli regime since its establishment. Maintaining Jewish supremacy over the entire territory reflects an apartheid logic that restricts or erases Palestinian rights. The genocide in Gaza is its most extreme manifestation, showing how far the regime is willing to go to achieve its objective. As a Jewish Israeli, I ask Americans not to look away Immediately after Hamas' criminal atrocity on Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli politicians, military commanders and members of Knesset openly declared their goals. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tied the war to the biblical commandment to "blot out the memory of Amalek" – a message every Israeli understands as a call for total annihilation. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced a complete siege on Gaza City ‒ no electricity, no food, no fuel. President Isaac Herzog claimed that it was false to speak of innocent civilians in Gaza, and that 'an entire nation ... is responsible' for Hamas' crimes. Words quickly turned into actions. As early as November 2023, Brig. Gen. Yogev Bar-Sheshet reported from inside the Gaza Strip: 'There's nothing left. Anyone who comes back here, if they come back at all, will find scorched earth. No homes, no agriculture, nothing. They have no future.' The attack on the population of Gaza goes far beyond the staggering number of deaths. It is a methodical policy with a clear objective: full occupation of the Gaza Strip and ethnic cleansing of its residents. The siege, starvation tactics, leveling of entire cities, relentless air strikes and manipulative use of humanitarian aid to force population transfer through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's 'aid centers' – all this is designed to eliminate Palestinian life in the Gaza Strip. More than 90% of the population has been displaced, and about 92% of all housing units have been destroyed or damaged. Most hospitals and schools have been attacked, and many have been put out of service by Israel. The options Israel leaves to 2 million people of Gaza range from expulsion to death by starvation, disease, shooting or air strikes. We must call the suffering in Gaza what it is: genocide This is not about random acts of cruelty. This is genocide, in the full sense of the word: a coordinated attack on all aspects of the lives of a group of people, aimed at erasing the foundations of their existence. The vision of a land 'cleansed' of Palestinians, free for Jewish Israelis to take over, is not limited to the Gaza Strip. While the attack in Gaza is underway, Israel has also ramped up efforts to drive Palestinians in the West Bank into ever-shrinking enclaves and degrade their living conditions. The military has taken over and destroyed entire neighborhoods, displacing about 40,000 people. Also, in recent months, consistent attacks by settlers have driven 40 communities out of their homes, while many others face imminent expulsion. Meanwhile, the network of checkpoints installed by Israel severely restricts Palestinians' freedom of movement, blocks farmers from accessing their land and damages the economy. In Gaza and in all the areas under Israel's control, we are witnessing the complete stripping away of Palestinians' rights, both as individuals and as a collective, in the face of unrestrained, deliberate and systematic Israeli violence. When I talk with Palestinian friends and partners, I can hardly look them in the eye anymore. Knowing my own society is committing these crimes has shattered everything I thought I knew about myself, about my country, about humanity. To begin rebuilding from the ashes, the genocide must stop. Yet this will not happen from within. There is no institution or mechanism in Israel today capable or willing to stop the government's campaign of annihilation. The international community has also failed. Some leaders have issued hollow statements, while others – especially the United States, both under the Trump administration and the Biden administration – are directly assisting Israel in the horrors. Only sustained public pressure on world leaders, and an uncompromising demand that they use every measure available under international law, can bring this genocide to an end.
