Update on the South Rim Fire in Montrose County

Yahoo5 days ago
MONTROSE COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – The South Rim Wildfire remains active in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park after it was ignited by lightning strikes on July 10.
The park is actively working with local, state, and federal partners to manage the fire and to assess possible post-fire impacts.
Visitors are still not allowed in the park until further notice, and at this time, drinking water supplies still have not been directly impacted. As of July 21, a group of U.S. Forest Service and Department of Interior hydrologists and soil scientists have been performing assessments to evaluate the possibilities of debris flow and sedimentation that could impact water quality.
When conditions allow, there will be a Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team that will look into post-fire threats like debris flow, hazard trees, impacts on recreation, wildlife, vegetation, flooding, hazardous materials, and historic and cultural sites.
BAER includes officials from the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the National Weather Service.
The National Park Service will share more information as it becomes available.

Section of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado reopens; South Rim Fire remains active

A portion of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is back open after wildfires forced park officials to shut the park down earlier this month. The North Rim of the park in western Colorado is now accessible to the public. It reopened on Wednesday after having been closed since July 10 when lightning strikes started two wildfires. The North Rim Fire didn't wind up causing big problems, but the South Rim Fire grew to more than 4,000 acres. On Thursday it was 52% contained and remained active in some areas. The South Rim of the park remains closed due to the ongoing firefight, along with the East Portal campgrounds. Earlier this week, Rep. Jeff Hurd, who represents Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, visited with crews inside the park who have been battling the South Rim Fire. "Federal, state, and local crews in (District 3) are working in close coordination to protect lives and land," Hurd wrote in a social media post about his visit.

Clouds force last-minute delay for astronaut launch to the International Space Station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Thick clouds prompted SpaceX to call off Thursday's planned launch of four astronauts to the International Space Station for NASA. The countdown was halted at the one-minute, 7-second mark. SpaceX's next launch attempt from Kennedy Space Center is Friday, although the weather forecast is less favorable. The U.S., Japanese and Russian crew will spend at least six months at the space station, replacing colleagues launched in March as the fill-ins for NASA's two stuck astronauts. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who's temporarily leading NASA, was at Kennedy Space Center for the launch attempt. The morning started out with ideal weather, but the wind picked up and the clouds rolled in. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
