Canadian man braves the snow to buy a Lotto 6/49 ticket — ends up winning $50K prize
Robert Dormiedy of Ajax, Ont., nearly skipped his usual lottery stop on Feb. 15, 2025. A heavy snowfall had him second-guessing the trip — but he bundled up anyway and headed to his local Circle K. That spontaneous decision ended up winning him $50,000 in the Lotto 6/49 Super Draw.
'I almost didn't pick up a ticket for this draw. It was a snowy day, and I didn't want to go out to the store, but thankfully I did,' said the winner, while visiting the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.
This isn't Dormiedy's first brush with lottery luck. In 2013, he won $184,625 — also through Lotto 6/49. The longtime player says the feeling of winning never gets old.
'Being a winner feels great,' said Dormiedy. 'I couldn't be more surprised or happy.'
The winner, now retired, has been a dedicated lottery player for decades. His go-to games include Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Lottario and Ontario 49. He always uses OLG's Quick Pick option to select his numbers — and never forgets to say yes to Encore.
The day after buying his ticket, Dormiedy was at home when he decided to check the results. That's when he realized he had won the lottery.
'I went to the kitchen and thought to check my ticket. I scanned it, using the OLG app, and saw the 'Big Winner' message,' said Dormiedy.
'I was so happy, as was my wife, who was there with me.'
With his $50,000 prize, he plans to tackle some long-awaited renovations.
The Feb. 15 Lotto 6/49 Super Draw awarded 20 separate $50,000 prizes across Ontario. It was part of a special event that also included the Classic and Gold Ball draws.
Lotto 6/49 gives players a chance to win two jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday for $3 per play. The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees at least $1 million — or a growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb past $60 million.

Arrest made in gas station shooting that left 2 injured
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An arrest has been made in a shooting at a Hickory Hill gas station that left a man and a juvenile critically injured last month. Tariq Robinson, 21, is charged with two counts of criminal attempt first-degree murder, two counts of employment of a firearm with intent to commit a felony, and criminal attempt especially aggravated robbery. ORIGINAL STORY: Two injured in Hickory Hill gas station shooting On May 29, Memphis Police say they responded to the Circle K gas station on 6193 Mount Moriah Road Extended regarding a shooting call. A male victim was found sitting in he driver's seat of a Corolla suffering from a gunshot wound to his left hand and face. A juvenile victim was later found after he ran from the Corolla during the shooting. Police say the male juvenile was suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper left leg and abrasions to his face. They were both taken to the hospital in critical condition. Man allegedly shoots coworker after 'exchange of words' Video footage showed two men getting out of a white Nissan Altima and walking toward the two victims sitting in the Corolla. Witnesses say they saw one of the suspects running after the Corolla when it left the parking lot and began yelling, 'get out the car, get out the car' as it drove off. The suspect is then accused of firing shots into he back of the Corolla. On June 2, Memphis Police Violent Crime Unit investigators conducted a search warrant on the suspect's Nissan Altima. The investigators said a wallet was found in the front passenger side of the vehicle belonging to Kevon Chapman, and another was found in the backseat belonging to Tariq Robinson. Tariq Robinson was booked into jail on Tuesday. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning. His bond has yet to be set. Cancer survivor wins the lottery for a remarkable fourth time
A Canadian man has claimed a lottery jackpot for the fourth time in his life. David Serkin's latest victory came on May 3 when he claimed $1 million in a May 3 drawing of the Lotto 6-49 Gold Ball draw in Alberta, according to a press release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. This follows on from the $1 million he won in November 2024 and the $500,000 he won in August of the same year. Both victories were in the Lotto 6-49 drawing. That brings his total winnings to $2.5 million in less than a year. His first win was a $250,000 jackpot in 2013. 'I know the odds are astronomical. I don't think it'll happen again, but I still like buying tickets.' The odds of winning the jackpot are roughly 1 in 33 million, the WCLC said. Serkin, a resident of Lethbridge, around 130 miles south of Calgary, said that he has been purchasing lottery tickets for over 40 years. 'You check your ticket, and if you win, you're happy. If you don't, you can always try again,' he said. He told the WCLC's website that he is a cancer survivor and is retired. 'I am just so grateful for all of it,' Serkin said. The Lethbridge man described his recent win, saying that he was out for coffee with his sons when he checked his tickets. When he realized he had won, 'They asked to see it and said, 'Not again!' Serkin said that the last time he won, he took his wife, who he says is still in disbelief over his lucky streak, on a trip to Maui. This time, the couple is headed to Newfoundland for a vacation.
