Retiree celebrates becoming instant multi-millionaire with lottery

A great-grandfather from Tiny Township has become an instant multi-millionaire after his weekly routine of purchasing lottery tickets for decades turned into his first big win. "I always play with my own numbers," shared Walter Kondur after learning he won $2 million in the Ontario 49 April 23 draw. Kondur said he used one of his grandkid's birthdays for his winning ticket, and discovered his luck while checking the numbers on his phone. "I showed my phone to my son, and he thought I'd won a Free Play," he recalled. "I told him to take another look. When he saw that I'd won the top prize, he was shocked. At first, he didn't believe it, but once it sank in, he was absolutely thrilled." Kondur purchased his winning ticket at Ultramar On The Run on Country Road 93 in Midland, and plans to buy a new house, truck and boat with his windfall. He also intends to spread the joy. 'What comes to mind right away is how much good you can do with the money. I look forward to helping my kids,' he added. Ontario 49 has draws every Wednesday and Saturday.

Ontario 49: Man keeps big lottery win a secret from his family for months

When Cezar Corbillon checked his Ontario 49 lottery ticket and saw $50,000, he kept quiet. The Toronto building operator had won the second prize in the July 17, 2024 draw and decided to tell absolutely no one. 'I haven't told anyone about my win,' said Corbillon in March 2025, while visiting the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up his winnings. 'Until today, it was a secret between me and the ticket checker.' Corbillon's strategy? Play it cool, say nothing, and wait until the money lands in his hands before telling his family. 'I look forward to surprising my family once I receive my cheque,' he said. For over 15 years, Corbillon has been a faithful lottery player, regularly playing Ontario 49, Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, and Pick-3. He always says yes to Encore and prefers choosing his own numbers — a personal ritual that finally paid off. Though he's had a few modest wins in the past, this was his first major prize. 'When I purchased my Ontario 49 ticket, I placed it in my wallet and went about my day,' said Corbillon. 'After the draw, I used the store's ticket checker to see how I did. When I realized it was a winning ticket, I quietly tucked my ticket back into my wallet. I was happy on the inside and couldn't hold back the smile on my face.' With his prize money, Corbillon plans to pay off some bills. He purchased the lucky ticket at Harrington's Convenience on Milner Avenue in Scarborough. Ontario 49 is a $1 per play game with draws held every Wednesday and Saturday. Each play includes one set of six numbers between 1 and 49. Matching all six numbers wins the $2 million jackpot, but second prize — like Corbillon's — can also make a big impact. If you're looking to take a break from gambling, self-exclusion programs can be effective tools. See here for resources that are available across Canada.

Canadian man braves the snow to buy a Lotto 6/49 ticket — ends up winning $50K prize

Robert Dormiedy of Ajax, Ont., nearly skipped his usual lottery stop on Feb. 15, 2025. A heavy snowfall had him second-guessing the trip — but he bundled up anyway and headed to his local Circle K. That spontaneous decision ended up winning him $50,000 in the Lotto 6/49 Super Draw. 'I almost didn't pick up a ticket for this draw. It was a snowy day, and I didn't want to go out to the store, but thankfully I did,' said the winner, while visiting the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. This isn't Dormiedy's first brush with lottery luck. In 2013, he won $184,625 — also through Lotto 6/49. The longtime player says the feeling of winning never gets old. 'Being a winner feels great,' said Dormiedy. 'I couldn't be more surprised or happy.' The winner, now retired, has been a dedicated lottery player for decades. His go-to games include Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, Lottario and Ontario 49. He always uses OLG's Quick Pick option to select his numbers — and never forgets to say yes to Encore. The day after buying his ticket, Dormiedy was at home when he decided to check the results. That's when he realized he had won the lottery. 'I went to the kitchen and thought to check my ticket. I scanned it, using the OLG app, and saw the 'Big Winner' message,' said Dormiedy. 'I was so happy, as was my wife, who was there with me.' With his $50,000 prize, he plans to tackle some long-awaited renovations. The Feb. 15 Lotto 6/49 Super Draw awarded 20 separate $50,000 prizes across Ontario. It was part of a special event that also included the Classic and Gold Ball draws. Lotto 6/49 gives players a chance to win two jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday for $3 per play. The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees at least $1 million — or a growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb past $60 million. Ontario woman wins $100K Encore lotto prize, calls her boss to let him know she won't be quitting

Tammy Larson had a life-changing moment when she checked her Daily Grand ticket and discovered she'd won $100,000 through Encore in the Nov. 28, 2024, draw. For many, a lottery win sparks dreams of retirement — but not Larson. Before celebrating, the Thunder Bay, Ont., resident called her boss to let him know she wasn't going anywhere. 'I shared the good news with my dad and then with my boss, reassuring him that I wasn't going to be quitting my job,' said Larson, who works in administration. Instead of an early retirement, Larson is setting her sights on new experiences — including a potential trip abroad to catch a Tottenham Hotspur soccer match. 'I've always tried to live life to the fullest. I've swum with dolphins in Jamaica, skydived in Manitoba, and ridden down the longest zipline in Canada,' said Larson. 'With my winnings, I plan to pay down my mortgage, share with my family, and perhaps take a trip abroad to catch a Tottenham Hotspur soccer match.' Larson is a regular lottery player with OLG. Each week she picks up her Daily Grand, Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49 and Ontario 49 tickets from her preferred retail location, and makes sure to always add Encore to all her plays. Encore is a bonus game that can be played in conjunction with most lottery games for an extra $1, as players receive a random seven-digit number. There are two Encore draws every day. In this case, Larson matched the last six of seven Encore numbers — 3075588 — helping her secure the second biggest prize. The Thunder Bay-resident has won many modest prizes over the years, but nothing could have prepared her for the thrill of seeing her $100,000 win appear at the ticket checker. 'I was at the store when I used the ticket checker to see how I did on my tickets. When I saw the prize amount, I couldn't believe it,' said Larson. 'I took my winning ticket to the clerk, and as they validated it, they said, 'Oh, you won big!' We were both thrilled!'
