Ontario woman wins $100K Encore lotto prize, calls her boss to let him know she won't be quitting
Tammy Larson had a life-changing moment when she checked her Daily Grand ticket and discovered she'd won $100,000 through Encore in the Nov. 28, 2024, draw. For many, a lottery win sparks dreams of retirement — but not Larson. Before celebrating, the Thunder Bay, Ont., resident called her boss to let him know she wasn't going anywhere.
'I shared the good news with my dad and then with my boss, reassuring him that I wasn't going to be quitting my job,' said Larson, who works in administration.
Instead of an early retirement, Larson is setting her sights on new experiences — including a potential trip abroad to catch a Tottenham Hotspur soccer match.
'I've always tried to live life to the fullest. I've swum with dolphins in Jamaica, skydived in Manitoba, and ridden down the longest zipline in Canada,' said Larson.
'With my winnings, I plan to pay down my mortgage, share with my family, and perhaps take a trip abroad to catch a Tottenham Hotspur soccer match.'
Larson is a regular lottery player with OLG. Each week she picks up her Daily Grand, Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49 and Ontario 49 tickets from her preferred retail location, and makes sure to always add Encore to all her plays.
Encore is a bonus game that can be played in conjunction with most lottery games for an extra $1, as players receive a random seven-digit number. There are two Encore draws every day. In this case, Larson matched the last six of seven Encore numbers — 3075588 — helping her secure the second biggest prize.
The Thunder Bay-resident has won many modest prizes over the years, but nothing could have prepared her for the thrill of seeing her $100,000 win appear at the ticket checker.
'I was at the store when I used the ticket checker to see how I did on my tickets. When I saw the prize amount, I couldn't believe it,' said Larson.
'I took my winning ticket to the clerk, and as they validated it, they said, 'Oh, you won big!' We were both thrilled!'

‘That person I heard about on the news was me': Ontario man claims $65-million Lotto Max prize
An Etobicoke man is planning a global adventure on some of the most luxurious trains after winning a massive $65-million lottery jackpot. Mohit Sharma has long been enamoured with the world's most famous and luxurious trains. Now, as Ontario's newest multimillionaire, his dreams of riding the rails will soon come true after claiming a Lotto Max jackpot of $65 million from the Oct. 15, 2024 draw. During a winner's celebration hosted by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG) in Toronto, Sharma noted he started buying lottery tickets in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, giving himself a weekly routine to look forward to during the lockdowns. Setting a budget, he purchased Lotto Max and Lotto 6-49 tickets with Encore each week, using the OLG's quick pick feature. 'I don't pick the numbers, so, knowing that a random number that the lottery computer picked for me the winner — and my name was on that ticket — is just unbelievable,' Sharma said in a news release. Sharma, who works as a consultant, likes to check his lottery tickets soon after the draw. When he heard on the news that the winning Lotto Max ticket was sold in Etobicoke, he rushed to check the tickets he had stored in a drawer. 'The first ticket I scanned was the winner,' Sharma said. 'I couldn't believe it and my heart started pounding. My phone screen lit up as the words 'Big Winner' flashed across the screen I thought to myself, 'I guess that person I heard about on the news was me.'' Sharma was in the middle of cooking when he discovered he'd won the jackpot. In the intensity of the moment, he doesn't know how he had the clarity to turn off the stove before a fire started in his kitchen. Sharma went on a walk to clear his head. When he returned home, he scanned the ticket again, just to make sure he wasn't dreaming. He then began researching how to claim his prize and read about other big lottery winners. Not wanting to cause any anxiety for his family, Sharma decided to wait and tell them about his win in person. When the time finally came, Sharma gathered his family members together for the big reveal. 'To say they were shocked is an understatement,' he said. 'I had to pinch a couple of them to prove it was real. It was an emotional moment with lots of trembling hands and elevated heart rates all around.' Sharma wanted to share the news over a round of champagne, but the family didn't have proper champagne glasses. The only store still open was Walmart. 'So, we ran over to buy champagne glasses, and raised a glass to my good fortune. We finished the bottle together that night,' Sharma added. With the help of a financial team to manage his new-found wealth, Sharma is now planning to travel and take it easy. He's also exploring ways to give back to his community and support causes close to his heart. Sharma loves to read and learn, and is considering going back to school for another degree or diploma. As for rest and relaxation, he intends to tour the globe as a passenger on some of the world's most iconic trains. 'I have dreamt of travelling on these luxurious and exotic trains. I want to go to Japan to experience one of the world's fastest trains, The Shinkansen,' he added. 'I also want to travel on The Indian Pacific that goes from Sydney to Perth, Australia. The famous Orient Express is another on the top of my list, too.' Sharma also plans to see more of Canada aboard The Canadian, from Toronto to Vancouver. In addition, he plans to to ride The Caledonia Sleeper, which criss-crosses the United Kingdom. 'This is what will excite me the most,' he said. Sharma's winning Lotto Max ticket at Lakeshore Mini Mart on Lakeshore Boulevard West in Etobicoke. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. Lotto Max: Calgary local goes nearly 8 months before realizing his ticket is worth $1M
Ming Zhu of Calgary got the surprise of a lifetime when he finally checked a Lotto Max ticket from the Aug. 9, 2024 draw and realized he was holding on to a $1 million prize. He had completely forgotten about the ticket until April, when he decided to scan it on a whim. By then, nearly eight months had passed, and he had just four months left before the prize would have expired unclaimed. 'I have bought tickets for many years, thinking, 'I bought; I have a chance,'' said Zhu while claiming his prize with the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). Lottery winners in Canada have one year from the draw date printed on the ticket to collect their winnings. After that, prizes can no longer be claimed — making Zhu's timing a very close call. With the unexpected windfall, he and his wife already have big plans. 'We're going to buy a new home,' said Zhu. Zhu remembers the moment he went to check his ticket. When he walked into the store in April, he couldn't believe what he was seeing. 'I checked [the ticket] again and again,' he said. 'Then I left the store and told the news to my wife.' At first, she didn't believe him. 'She didn't believe me, so I used my laptop to show her on the website,' he said. Once he finally convinced his wife of the major prize he just won, the pair were excited and couldn't wait to spend the money together. Zhu purchased his winning ticket from Shoppers Drug Mart located at 5628 4 Street NW in Calgary. He won his prize by matching one of the Maxmillions selections from the Aug. 9 Lotto Max draw: 8, 22, 26, 32, 38, 41, and 44. Maxmillions prizes are additional $1 million draws that are triggered when the Lotto Max main jackpot reaches $50 million or more. Each Maxmillions draw has its own set of winning numbers, giving players even more chances to win big alongside the main jackpot. In Zhu's case, his ticket matched all seven numbers from one of these bonus draws — earning him $1 million.
