Reagan boys' volleyball perseveres to advance to first ever regional final

Miami Herald10-05-2025
It was a year ago at this time that Yeison Gonzalez helped the Mater Lakes boys volleyball program break through and make its first ever trip to state.
After transferring to Ronald Reagan High last summer, Gonzalez, now a senior wanted to do the same for the Bison's boys program.
On Friday night, after putting together by far the best season in program history and securing the No. 1 seed in Region 4-2A, it looked like that dream might come crashing down.
But Gonzalez refused to let it happen.
Hosting No. 4 seed and an upset-minded Belen Jesuit team that was much better than its 13-15 record indicated, Gonzalez, along with his fellow outside hitter Diego Cobena, prevailed in a five-set marathon match, 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 25-13, 15-13) to win a Region 4-2A semifinal at the Reagan gym.
Reagan, after winning its opening set, had lost all the momentum as the fired up Wolverines, with their small but fired-up contingent of fans cheering them on, won the next two to go up 2-1 before the Bison rallied to win the final two sets and advance.
Now 23-4, Reagan broke new ground with the win advancing to its first-ever regional final. What could have been a rematch with Gonzalez's former team didn't transpire, though, as No. 3 seed Varela also broke new ground, knocking off No. 2 Mater Lakes in the opposite semi and advancing to its first-ever regional final.
The two teams will square off in the Region 4-2A final in Reagan's gym on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with a first-ever state final four berth for both teams on the line.
Gonzalez dominated all players on the floor as he finished with 31 kills. But if he was Batman, Cobena was his Robin as he had his own big night finishing with 16 kills.
'So after that third set, it really became a mental struggle with the team and all we had to do really......we talked about it in the huddle, about what was going on out on the court and what was going wrong,' Gonzalez said. 'The mentality we needed to get instead of the one that we had. It was let's not fight to make a play, let's fight to get the very next point and not think beyond that. I think that really helped us get the momentum going back in our direction again.'
Even though the first set score was close, Reagan led the entire way before a late Belen charge closed the gap. That late surge would turn the tide in the Wolverines' favor.
Led by outside hitter Max Klemick and Billy Essig who had a devastating serve, Belen jumped out to early lead in the second set and led the entire way. Reagan took a small early lead in the third but Klemick, Essig and Luke Diaz led the way back for another 25-22 win.
'It's very difficult to stay focused because there's a lot of pressure knowing this very well could've been my last high school game,' Gonzalez said. 'So that was my mentality. I had to work through not worrying about coming back to win the match, just winning the next point that I was in.'
Reagan jumped out to a quick lead in the fourth set and never looked back, winning 25-13 and carried that momentum in the final set, leading 9-6 at one point. But Belen kept fighting and a pair of Klemick kills spurned a 6-2 run and 12-11 lead.
But 'Batman and Robin' wouldn't been denied as they each recorded two kills over the next five points, Cobena the last one for the game-winner.
'He's brought so much to our program,' said Reagan assistant coach Joshua Garavito of Gonzalez. 'I'm sure it was a very tough decision for him to transfer over and people were always chirping to him about he had made the wrong decision and stuff like that. But he never let it get to his head and stayed strong throughout the process. 'We really built a family here and I think that's what kept him as happy and as strong as he's been.'
Said Gonzalez: 'I helped make history last year at Mater Lakes and now I want to help make history here. I love the faculty and staff here, it's been an honor to help this program to success and now we need to get one more and get this thing to state.'

Cornerback Carlton Davis remains mum about his health but says he'll be ready for Patriots opener

That's good news for the Patriots, who signed the cornerback to a three-year, $54 million deal over the offseason, but have yet to see the full range of his skills because he hasn't been 100 percent. 'It sucks pretty bad because when you come to a team, you want to be able to display who you are,' Davis said of being sidelined. 'It's hard just watching film. I want to be out there firsthand. I want to be able to show them who they got, and I want to earn their respect and earn a role on the team. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up '[But] I feel it's coming together really good,' he added. 'If I'm being honest, I'm really excited for the Patriots. We're meshing together. All the guys we've got coming in are great football players and better teammates. So I'm happy to go out there and take the field with them. And I'm not out there, it just sucks.' Advertisement On Wednesday, Davis good-naturedly brushed off specific questions about his health — 'You guys are trying to get me,' he said, 'somebody's trying to get a story here, but I respect it. I respect it.' — but acknowledged he's been dealing with 'something' that's impacted his ability to stay healthy. Advertisement 'I'm dealing with something, for sure. But I'm still ready to play right now,' the 28-year-old said. 'We're just being smart about it and we are just going through the process. 'A lot of back and forth with the trainers, coaches, just making sure that we're being smart and not having any setbacks and having progress every day.' With Christian Gonzalez already in the fold, the 6-foot-1-inch, 206-pound Davis was signed in the offseason as New England's No. 2 cornerback. However, the Patriots haven't had either of their corners on the field together for competitive 11-on-11 work this summer, as Gonzalez deals with a hamstring while Davis works through his health issues. Both, however, project to be on the field for the start of the regular season, as the decision not to play Gonzalez in the preseason appears to be a precautionary move. As for Davis, he was on and off the field again Wednesday, but continued to be more of a presence on the practice field over the last week. He said Wednesday he anticipates being able to continue to 'ramp it up more' over the course of camp. 'I'm good physically,' said Davis. 'I just take it day-by-day, trying to make sure that I'm not having any setbacks and that I'm just going forward. So as you see, I was out there [Wednesday] during the team period. Hopefully [Thursday], I do a little bit more and just keep it steady so I'm ready for week one.' David brings a glittering resume to New England. The former Auburn star has been in the league seven seasons, and was part of a Tampa Bay defense that won a Super Bowl in 2020. (He had a career-high four interceptions with the Buccaneers that season.) He spent a year with the Lions before signing with the Patriots as a free agent this past offseason. Advertisement Patriots coach Mike Vrabel wouldn't promise Davis would be on the field for the opener against Las Vegas, but did say he's 'excited' at the prospect of getting Davis back at practice on a consistent basis. 'To speculate about where he's going to be Week 1, I'm not going to do that with anybody,' Vrabel said Wednesday when asked about the veteran cornerback. 'I'm going to focus on today, and I'm excited to see him get back out there and continue to work and build back towards that potential start of the season.' While it seems unlikely Davis will be on the field for Saturday's preseason game against the Vikings, the joint practice represented another step in the right direction for a veteran who is leaning into an optimistic approach as the regular season nears. 'Me personally, I felt like I had a pretty decent day,' Davis said. 'Got to get better. Got to get back in shape. And have got to be more dominant. We want to be out there and have our presence felt every play.' Christopher Price can be reached at

Fresh legs: Next crop of backs rotates in to carry load

Several of the area's top high school running backs graduated last season, but there are many returning starters eager to take up the mantle. Gone are five backs who picked up more than 1,500 yards, including Louisiana Mr. Football Xavier Ford, who ran for 3,467 yards and 52 touchdowns. However, the talent pool is not dry as Jaiden Briggs, J'vien Adams, Charles McFarland, Makelin Lemoine, Braylon Garrick, Dakota Strother and Dillian Green look to put up big numbers in 2025. Jaiden Briggs Briggs (5-10, 165) set Vinton's single-season rushing record at 1,734 yards on 248 carries last season after an injury-plagued sophomore season in 2023. A switch to the split-back veer offense led to Briggs scoring a career-high 21 touchdowns in 2024, and Vinton recorded its first winning season since 2014. He earned District 5-2A first team and American Press All-Southwest Louisiana Small School honors last season. 'I think a change in the offense and getting him more carries helped, and his maturity as a player,' Vinton head coach Tyler Lavergne said. 'We definitely got a lot riding on him this year. We want what he gave us last year and more, possibly.' J'vien Adams Adams (5-9, 170) was part of Iowa's big four that included Jeremiah Bushnell, Cohen Charles and Jonathan Walker Jr., threats who helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the semifinals for the third time in program history. After running for 1,220 yards and 12 touchdowns on 147 carries in 2024, the senior, along with Bushnell, will have to take on an increased load. 'He needs to step up into a leadership role to help these young ones and do whatever it takes to be able to move the ball,' Iowa head coach Tommy Johns said of Adams. Braylon Garrick With Westlake's big receiving threats — Kevin Rideau and Ryan Allen — playing at McNeese State, Garrick, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior, is looking to make noise in the tough District 3-3A. Garrick ran for 881 yards and 13 touchdowns on 147 carries last season, despite being limited by injuries. Head coach John Richardson said he expects an explosive season out of him after helping the Rams reach the regional round. 'He struggled last year with a lot of injuries,' Richardson said. 'He only played about half of the snaps last year and had about 800 yards. 'If he can stay healthy this year, he is going to have a big year. He looks great right now. He stands out in practice. He is faster and in better shape.' Dillian Green Green (5-7, 150) ran for 850 yards and 12 touchdowns to help LaGrange recover from back-to-back one-win seasons. Green is part of a large senior class that looks to give the Gators their first playoff win since 2014. 'Dillian Green is going to be Dillian Green,' LaGrange head coach Idaibi Ogbanga said. 'He is one of the most elusive backs that I have seen in a while. He is just a really good athlete.' Makelin Lemoine A two-way starter who earned all-District 4-1A first-team and all-Southwest Louisiana honors last year, Lemoine, along with Tristan Leblanc (2,030 yards, 23 TDs), was part of Elton's one-two punch. He picked up 1,648 yards on 152 carries and scored 23 total touchdowns. Lemoine, a 5-10, 185-pound junior, will draw a lot of attention from opposing teams as Elton looks to build on its 8-4 season last year. Charles McFarland McFarland ran for 1,480 yards and 17 touchdowns in his first season as a full-time starter with nine consecutive games over 100 yards and looks to carry Grand Lake to its seventh consecutive winning season. Dakota Strother With East Beauregard switching back to the double-wing after a season running the spread offense, Strother, a 5-8, 165-pound senior, is poised to have a breakout year as the Trojans look to rebound from a 1-8 season. He ran for 934 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024. 'We look for good things from him,' East Beauregard head coach Ronnie Simmons said. 'He was our best offense last year, right at almost a 1,000 yards rushing. He had a good offseason, so we are excited about having him back.'

Did Malik Nabers give Christian Gonzalez bulletin board material?

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers blindly ranked the top five cornerbacks that he will face in the 2025 season, and he might have given some extra motivation to New England Patriots All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez with his response. In order, Nabers ranked the top five cornerbacks on the Giants' schedule with Patrick Surtain II, Trent McDuffie, Jaylon Johnson, Quinyon Mitchell and lastly, Gonzalez. Getting snubbed isn't anything new for Gonzalez, who wasn't even selected for the Pro Bowl in 2024. He finished the season with 59 tackles, 11 pass deflections and two interceptions. If anything, he has continued to use it as motivation throughout his career. Gonzalez will look to take things to an even higher level in his third season, as he looks to assert himself as one of the best corners in the NFL. He will have an opportunity to let his play do the talking when he matches up with Nabers for the Week 13 Monday Night Football showdown on December 1. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
