We will ‘be ready': After government rebuke, Resorts World Sentosa CEO discusses future of integrated resort
In November 2024, Singapore's gambling agency announced it was renewing the integrated resort's casino license for two years, instead of three, citing "unsatisfactory" tourism performance from 2021 to 2023.
The announcement came after Resorts World Sentosa had pledged to invest $6.8 billion Singapore dollars ($5.3 billion) to renew and expand the integrated resort.
The truncated license renewal has not changed Resorts World Sentosa's expansion or investment plans, Lee said.
The company opened two new attractions in 2025, Minion Land at the Universal Studios Singapore theme park, and the Singapore Oceanarium, which replaced the integrated resort's older S.E.A. Aquarium.
"This year is really a game-changing year for us," she said. "Over the next few years... to 2030, we will be continuing to launch new attractions."
In announcing the two-year license renewal, the Gambling Regulatory Authority considered Resorts World Sentosa's ability to "develop, maintain and promote" itself as a compelling tourist destination.
When asked which of these areas the resort is focused on, Lee said: "The big push for us is really transforming Resorts World Sentosa into a premium lifestyle destination."
Shopping, once a top priority for travelers in Asia, is not a priority in the resort's transformation, said Lee.
"Our focus is really into experiences," Lee said.
The decision to replace a "Madagascar" movie-themed area of Universal Studios Singapore with Minion Land was, in part, related to the universal appeal of the characters in the "Despicable Me" franchise, she added.
"Minions stood out because ... this yellow character is very resonate to all ages of visitors, and all around the world because of the language that they use. It resonates from Asia to Europe to America and everywhere else. So to us, there's a common language we can use," she said.
Minions speak their own language, called Minionese, which incorporates elements of English, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Tagalog, among others, according to the "Despicable Me" fandom website.
Resorts World Sentosa is also planning to open new hotels, including The Laurus, a luxury hotel designed like a "collector's home" in Singapore, that is set to open later in 2025, Lee said.
In coming years, the integrated resort is planning to launch Super Nintendo World inside Universal Studios Singapore, as well as an elevated waterfront lifestyle complex with a 700-room hotel, hiking trails and a 289-foot light sculpture, she said.
"The waterfront lifestyle complex is really going to enhance the appeal of the Greater Southern Waterfront," she said. The complex is a "brownfield project," which will be visible from mainland Singapore.
Lee declined to comment on whether the planned lifestyle complex will have gaming facilities.

In a few months, Adele's album 25 will turn 10. The English superstar delivered her third full-length in November 2015, by which point she was already one of the most celebrated artists of her generation. The project was an immediate bestseller, and in the near-decade since it dropped, millions around the world have continued to buy — and especially stream — the collection. As Adele continues her musical hiatus, which could last for years, 25 earns its first honor from the RIAA in quite a long time. 25 Becomes a 12-Times Platinum Album The organization has now certified 25 as a 12-times platinum album. That means that the blockbuster has shifted 12 million equivalent units between sales and streams. That sum is specific to the United States, and its global total is surely much higher. Eight Years Later 25 Advances 25 advances from 11-times platinum to 12 almost exactly eight years after it last scored a platinum plaque. The title jumped from diamond status (10 million units) to 11-times platinum in August 2017. Since then, it has not managed another certification until now. 'Nobody 2' star Bob Odenkirk insisted he could do this Bruce Lee stunt
Bob Odenkirk had already proven he's a certified action star before "Nobody 2" (in theaters Aug. 15). The "Better Call Saul" star, 62, punched above his weight playing easily overlooked family guy Hutch Mansell (secretly a former assassin), who is pulled back into the vengeful killing life in the 2021 thriller "Nobody." With a baddie body count estimated in the 60s, a fan-beloved battle on a Winnipeg city bus, and $57 million global haul at the pandemic-hampered box office, Odenkirk made his mark with makeup-enhanced bloodied knuckles. He truly felt the pervasive "Nobody" enthusiasm during a 2022 hiking trip to Ireland, where 40 fans besieged him in a restaurant. "Every single one of them wanted a picture, mostly about 'Nobody.' They had a stuntman there dressed as me, ready to go," says Odenkirk. "I said, 'Watch me, I can do it.' " Even after pulling that off, Odenkirk was denied the opportunity to pay screen homage to Bruce Lee's legendary one-inch punch. "Bruce Lee could do it," he says. "But they said to me, 'No, you're not going to be able to sell that.' " Unlikely action star recruits an even less likely evil sheriff for 'Nobody 2': Colin Hanks If Odenkirk doesn't pop into mind when casting action stars, neither does Colin Hanks as Plummerville small-town bully Sheriff Abel. The casting inspiration came from Odenkirk, who starred as Deputy Bill Oswalt to Hanks' kind-hearted Officer Gus Grimly in FX's "Fargo" Season 1. "Colin is the sweetest guy with the sweetest face," says Odenkirk. "I thought he was the ideal guy to play the evil sheriff." He envisions a scenario when Becca and Hutch's two teenage kids have grown up and flown the coop. "It's like the kids are out of the house and in the world, and it's like, 'Gee, are they OK? Where are they now?' " says Odenkirk, who vows not to follow the summer vacation 'Nobody 2' with a Christmas-themed movie. "I don't want to copy National Lampoon that much."
