UK's 'poshest train' coming to Edinburgh with lavish seven course lunch
Luxury and nostalgia enthusiasts are in for a treat this festive season, with the opportunity to indulge in a lavish seven-course Christmas lunch while speeding along at 70mph aboard one of the world's most opulent trains.
The 1930s Pullman-style Northern Belle – formerly part of the legendary Orient Express group – is set to make a grand return to our city this winter, offering a throwback to the golden age of rail travel, complete with a red carpet welcome for passengers as they board.
The historic locomotive has two journeys planned in Scotland in August, including a scenic trip to Oban, followed by two extravagant Christmas Lunch excursions later in the year.
As patrons sip champagne and nibble on canapes like caviar blinis, the steam train will gracefully traverse the countryside after departing from Glasgow Central on November 29, eventually pulling into Edinburgh Waverley.
The organisers have promised: "Settle back into your comfortable armchair, pull one of our Christmas crackers and prepare for a sumptuous seven-course festive feast served with the finest wines.", reports Glasgow Live.

They added: "We round the meal off with a delicious, freshly-prepared seasonal dessert before bringing round our award-winning cheeseboard, accompanied by a glass of delightful port."
To conclude, guests can unwind with a fine cup of Fortnum and Mason tea or a special Northern Belle coffee, complemented by exquisite petits fours.
Live musicians will play festive melodies to fill you with Christmas cheer, while their onboard magician will roam from table to table, showcasing his magical talents.
They remarked: "It's the ideal way to celebrate Christmas, be you in a couple, with a group of friends and relatives or even just on your own, because you're bound to make new friends. You'd be Christmas crackers to miss it!".
While tickets aren't exactly a steal at £395, that price does include champagne and a bottle of wine per couple, and the seven-course meal features freshly prepared canapés such as caviar blinis and, naturally, a cheese board.
The Northern Belle is consistently ranked among the world's Top Ten trains, and one of its individually hand-decorated carriages was once part of the Royal Train. It's even whispered to house the late Queen Mother's favourite seat.
Actor Bill Nighy has called the train "the Grand Dame of luxury travel" during its appearance on Channel 5's The World's Most Scenic Railway Journeys.

Charming Cornish town often ignored for more popular neighbour named among 'best in UK'
This Cornwall town is often overlooked for its famous neighbour, but with an impressive seawater lido and tranquil beaches it is finally attracting the interest and intrigue it deserves Cornwall is a top destination for Brits seeking a first-rate seaside holiday close to home. But with over 400 miles of coastline, it's difficult to choose where in the region to centre your holiday. That said, a new ranking has named this one Cornwall destination among the best seaside towns in the UK. Often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, this lesser-known gem is equally charming and promises 'the most dramatic seaside setting in all of Cornwall'. Penzance was the only Cornwall destination on The Times' 2025 list of The Best Seaside Towns in the UK. Coming in at sixth place, this Cornish seaside town has long been overshadowed by St Ives which is less than a half-hour drive away. It comes after beachgoers were left stunned after a rare sea creature was spotted in St Ives.. While St Ives is considered the 'jewel in Cornwall's crown' and is often found on rankings of the best family holiday destinations and European beach spots, Penzance offers a more serene alternative. Located on the south coast, Penzance has been getting the recognition it deserves as of late with an advancing artistic and cultural scene. The town is home to boutique hotels, a blossoming restaurant and bar scene, new galleries and innovative installations all drawing visitors to the town's historic streets. 2024 marked the 75th anniversary of Penlee House becoming a Gallery and Museum. The estate was originally constructed in 1865 for a wealthy Penzance merchant before becoming one of the most important galleries in the UK today. While the town is full of cultural wonders, there is no denying that its natural beauty is the primary draw. The area overlooks Mount's Bay and the island abbey of St Michael's Mount, creating a distinctly dramatic vista. In addition to its top Times ranking, Penzance earned a place among the UK's seven best beach towns for 2025 in a ranking by National Geographic Traveller UK. The sheltered waters of Mount's Bay are ideal for kayaking and paddle boarding and Sennen Beach is a beloved surf spot. Swimming enthusiasts will also be drawn to the town's Grade II listed Jubilee Pool, which is the UK's largest seawater lido. First opened in 1935, the iconic Art Deco-style pool sits on the edge of the sea and offers visitors the chance to swim in its naturally heated geothermal waters. The attraction claims its 'combined system' enables the pool temperature to be sustained with a low carbon footprint. The pool is divided into three sections: the main pool, the geothermal pool, and a beginner's pool. There are also changing facilities, a café and a community space on hand. Penzance is well worth a visit in its own right, but if you're interested in stopping by St Ives it's a convenient trip away. Either take the 25-minute drive or hop on one of the many trains per day that travel from Penzance straight to St Ives. The Great Western Railway ride includes one stop at St Erth but only costs £6.20 one-way.

Netflix adds 'must watch' British TV comedy hailed as 'brilliant' by viewers
The ITV sitcom first streamed on ITV2 with fans already calling for Netflix to make the fifth series available Netflix has recently added a new British TV comedy show, with viewers already raving about the "brilliant" programme. The show has left many in stitches, and been labelled as a must-watch for comedy buffs. Plebs, which originated on ITV, has been praised by viewers as the "funniest British TV comedy ever made" as people rush to binge-watch it. The programme is currently sitting in third place on Netflix's top 10 ranking of most popular television shows. The ITV sitcom has a total of five series to binge, however only the first four are currently on Netflix. Fans have already called for the fifth series to be added. Plebs became a hit on ITV2 when it aired, with surprise guest stars that included the likes of Danny Dyer as Cassius the Gladiator. The show concluded in 2022 with a special feature-length Christmas episode, which saw the boys enlist in the army during peace time, before war broke out, sending them to the front line to fight for a cause they did not believe in. Fans have already taken to google to leave good reviews, with one person describing it as "the funniest, most brilliantly written comedy ever made". They added: "It's frustrating that it feels totally underrated. The characters are all so funny in their own right and the stories in each episode are final feature length film had us in tears as well as in stitches! Brilliant!! We will miss it so much!!" Someone else echoed: "Just finished binge watching the whole show and I loved it! Hate I found it so late in the game. It's a must watch!" "I've watched every episode of this," wrote another fan. "I think it's brilliant. Clever how it's an ancient setting but modern humour. Hope they make a season 6." The show has been described as a crossover between Horrible Histories and The Inbetweeners, full of juvenile humour which focuses on a group of unfortunate pals living circa 26BC amid the Roman Empire. Plebs follows the three unlucky lads, Marcus (Tom Rosenthal), Stylax (Joel Fry) and their house-slave Grumio (Ryan Sampson) as they take on the big city of Rome. Aside from all the chaos and hilarity throughout, you could also learn a thing or two about the ancient Romans. The show takes its history seriously, with esteemed historian Mary Beard said to be credited as an adviser on the show. However not everyone had glowing reviews, as some felt the show lost its spark by time the fourth series came along. One person wrote: "Excellent show! Belly laughs through the first three series'. Fell flat in the fourth series. Replacing the charm of Stylax with the horrible smarm of Jason was a huge huge mistake." "Its bonkers and there are some moments where it's far too reliant on second hand embarrasment, but it's still a good laugh and still quite a novel concept," another wrote.

Get a calming respite at this dreamy gender-neutral thermal bathhouse at Dempsey Hill
The ritual of bathing has long been known for its restorative benefits, but shy peeps might baulk at baring it all in an onsen – and not everyone has the luxury of owning a bathtub. But you don't have to wait till your next staycation for a relaxing hot soak, as Nowhere Baths is here to change the game. Set atop the scenic Dempsey Hill, Nowhere Baths is a modern communal bathhouse with heated pools. Unlike the Japanese-style Yunomori Onsen and Joya Onsen Café, this facility is mixed-gender, meaning that swimwear stays on at all times. Couples can finally make this a date activity, and there's no need to feel weird about seeing your pals in the buff. Moreover, the non-nude nature of the space makes it inclusive for gender non-conforming folk who typically get barred from traditional onsens. The two hot pools – an epsom salt bath and cloud bath with nanobubbles – are at toasty temperatures of 40°C. There's also a sauna, steam room, and invigorating cold plunge. Once done, relax in the lounge where you can pore over a book while sipping on a cup of hot tea. A two-hour pass inclusive of towels and shower facilities costs $55. Alternatively, get a $500 credit pack with $50 bonus credits – that works out to $50 per session for 10 sessions. TIME OUT TIP Mondays are for women only, while quieter 'hush hours' are on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Nowhere Baths is located at 14A Dempsey Road and opens daily from 10am to 9pm. Find out more and make your booking here. While you're in the area, check out Air CCCC for breakfast on a lawn or roam the hill on a self-guided heritage audio tour.
