NYC beaches open on Memorial Day weekend
NEW YORK (PIX11) — New York City beaches will open on Memorial Day weekend.
The public beaches will open on Saturday and will remain open until Sept. 7, according to the NYC Parks Department.
Two NY beaches make list of top 10 best beaches in the US
Lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming at other times is not permitted, officials said.
The city beaches are free to the public and span a total of 14 miles. The popular spots include Orchard Beach in the Bronx, Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn, Rockaway Beach in Queens, and Midland Beach, South Beach, Cedar Grove Beach, and Wolfe's Pond Beach on Staten Island.

Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island marks 20th anniversary
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Parks are popular summer destinations, and one world-class open space is celebrating an anniversary. Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island was built in 2005. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the facility is hosting several special events. More Local News The track will be open for a public community run on Thursday, June 12, at 6 p.m. New York City FC II will play four home matches at the iconic stadium on August 8th. Runners of all ages and students hold championships and qualifying meets. Lou Vasquez has been the director of Icahn Stadium for 20 years. His love of running began as a student athlete at the former Downing Stadium. 'There's so much history here. World records have been set here. It's an inspiration to the athletes, Come on down and run the track where Usain Bolt broke the world record,' he said. The city created the track and field space in 1936, originally called it Triborough Stadium. It has a seating capacity of 5,000 and meets specifications for local, national, international and Olympic events. The New York Football Club donated $3 million to upgrade the interior soccer field in 2024. In September, it hosted the first professional soccer matches. In July, the track will be replaced with the same surface used by the Olympics. This is the peak park season. Field trips and festivals happen all summer on the island. Canada wildfires smoke triggers air quality advisory in New York City

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Smoke from wildfires in Canada continues to drift into New York, leading officials to declare another Air Quality Health Advisory for Thursday. Air Quality Index values may reach between 101 and 150, which could raise health concerns for individuals sensitive to air pollution. More Local News Children, adults, and individuals with lung diseases, including asthma, should limit prolonged or intense physical activity outdoors, according to officials. N95 or KN95 masks can reduce exposure to air pollution. Zachary Iscol, the New York City Emergency Management Commissioner, told PIX11 News that should things get worse, 'we'll have a distribution plan to get masks out to firehouses and police precincts and libraries where people can pick them.' Regional airline closes up shop and plans ‘to sell everything' as flyers are left grounded
Silver Airways, an airline operating out of Florida, is selling all of its assets to an investment firm and shutting down its operation. The airline filed for bankruptcy in late 2024 due to its growing debts. Local broadcaster WLRN reports that Wexford Capital — the only party interested in buying the airline at a recent auction — will take control of the company. "In an attempt to restructure in bankruptcy, Silver entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company, who unfortunately has determined to not continue Silver's flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean," the airline wrote on Tuesday night. The company requested that customers looking for ticket refunds do so through the website and not at the airport. "All credit card purchases should be refunded through your credit card company or your travel agency," the company said. Silver was already dealing with hundreds of millions of dollars of debt when the company lost another $1 million around Memorial Day due to flight cancellations related to mechanical issues, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The airline maintained its headquarters in Fort Lauderdale and operated a second hub in Tampa, though by the end of its run the company only was flying eight turboprop planes. A few months earlier, it had double the number of planes, but in early March some of its fleet was repossessed. That too caused flight cancellations. The company almost lost its headquarters in April 2023 when the Broward County Commission considered terminating their lease at the airport over unpaid bills, according to One Mile At a Time. Silver primarily served Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Its locations included Tampa, Key West, Tallahassee, Pensacola and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, Georgetown, North Eluthera, Governor's Harbour, Bimini, Marsh Harbour, Nassau, and Freeport in the Bahamas, and St. Kitts, Tortola, Dominica, St. Maarten, St. Croix, San Juan and St. Thomas in the Caribbean.
