BN, PH to contest as unified coalition, says Bung Moktar

KOTA KINABALU (May 17): Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will contest the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17) as a coalition, regardless of whether they collaborate with other parties, said Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
He said both parties are fully committed to preparing early through the Gerak 17 programme to secure victory and form the next state government.
'The purpose of Gerak 17 is to build momentum and prepare to form the state government,' he said during the launch of the Sepanggar Umno Gerak 17 machinery at the Industrial Training Institute (IKM) in Sepanggar on Saturday.
'Back in the 2018 state election, we were caught off guard and unprepared, yet we managed to win 14 seats. This time, with Gerak 17, whether we end up working with other parties or not, BN and PH will move forward together. We will focus on strengthening our own machinery,' he said.
Bung also underlined the importance of sincerity in political negotiations, referring to recent remarks by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding coalition talks.
'When the Prime Minister says we need to discuss cooperation, I emphasise that discussions must be done like gentlemen. Don't negotiate in the morning, only to have us dropped by noon,' he said.
Describing PRN17 as a pivotal moment, Bung urged all parties involved to make the most of the opportunity.
'This opportunity may not come again. We must make full use of it,' he added.

"The people are able to judge for themselves which party is capable of delivering real progress for Sabah, as seen through the initiatives rolled out by the GRS-led government to benefit communities at all levels," he said. He made the remarks after handing over life jackets and signal lights to registered fishermen at Kampung Sembulan Lama on Sunday (22 June). Speaking on the aid distribution, Dr. Mohd Ritchie, who also chairs the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association, said a total of 150 units of similar aid were being distributed to fishermen in the area. Advertisement The initiative included 50 life jackets and signal lights each for fishermen in Kampung Sembulan Lama, Kampung Tanjung Aru, and Pulau Gaya. "We're concerned about the safety needs of fishermen, especially when out at sea. Life jackets and signal lights are essential for their protection," he said. He added that this was just the first phase of assistance, with plans underway to expand the programme to benefit more fishermen in the near future. ‘Don't need a middleman': PH can work with GRS if they want, but Sabah BN wont, says Bung Moktar
KOTA KINABALU, June 24 — Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin has rejected the idea of negotiating with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) through intermediaries, insisting he does not need a middleman to decide whether to work with other political parties ahead of the state election. The Lamag assemblyman reiterated his position that cooperation with the incumbent GRS was 'impossible' unless they 'cleanse their souls' first. 'They can work with GRS. And we can work with Pakatan Harapan (PH), but between me and GRS, let that remain between us. I don't need a middleman,' Bung said when speaking to reporters after a women's empowerment programme organised by Majlis Amanah Rakyat here today, He was responding to a question about the Unity Government Secretariat's call for the three coalitions in the federal administration — Barisan Nasional (BN), PH, and GRS — to cooperate ahead of the state elections. Bung said there had been no meetings between BN and GRS, nor any one-on-one discussions between him and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. 'If we want to talk, we talk directly. But as of now — no meetings, no discussions. And frankly, there's no need,' he said. Bung said his stance stemmed from what he claimed were past betrayals and a lack of sincerity by the coalition led by Hajiji. 'It's not that I refuse (to work with GRS). If they change into a party that is sincere and honest, I might consider it. But if they don't change, it's impossible. 'We agree in the morning, but by afternoon you change it, and then you take what's been given to us — how is that sincere? Sincerity means sticking to your word. That is how you win over the people,' he said. Bung also took a jab at GRS leaders for shedding 'crocodile tears', saying he no longer trusted their word. He was ostensibly referring to a recent unverified video of Hajiji, circulated online, which showed him in tears during one of his party's conventions while claiming it was his last term as chief minister. In contrast, Bung said BN had a cordial relationship with Pakatan Harapan (PH), and although negotiations were still ongoing, election clashes were unlikely. 'We are working with PH. Negotiations are okay, just that some finer details still need to be worked out,' he said. When asked if seat negotiations had begun, Bung said BN would contest in constituencies it believed it could win. 'I haven't decided how many, but if I can win 40, I'll contest 40,' he said.

BN to contest Sabah polls under own logo, says Zahid
KOTA KINABALU: Barisan Nasional (BN) will contest the upcoming Sabah state election under its own logo while keeping the door open for collaboration with other political parties, said BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The deputy prime minister and UMNO president emphasised BN's commitment to open politics, stating that the coalition consistently engages with all parties. 'We hope all discussions will be positive. No door should be left wide open, and no door should be closed completely. This means there is always room for negotiation and engagement,' he told reporters after officiating the Sabah Women Empowerment programme at the Sabah International Convention Centre. Ahmad Zahid confirmed that BN would use its traditional 'Dacing' (scales) symbol but did not rule out working with other coalitions. 'BN will contest under the 'Dacing' symbol, but we do not reject collaboration with other political coalitions,' he said. Present at the event were Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Rubiah Wang, MARA chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, and Sabah KEMAS chairman Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. Ahmad Zahid noted that detailed discussions on seat distribution have yet to take place as the Sabah Legislative Assembly has not been dissolved. However, he assured that negotiations would intensify once the election process begins. 'The best way forward is to adopt an open attitude, and of course, it is better to seek more allies than to create adversaries,' he added. The current five-year term of the Sabah state assembly will expire automatically on October 26, 2025.
