The teacher sustained about 25% burn injuries and is undergoing treatment at the district hospital, where her condition is said to be stable.
"The victim is a 26-year-old guest teacher at the Excellence School. The accused is 18 years and one month old and a class 12 student of the same institution. He went to the victim's house with petrol late on Monday afternoon, doused her with it, and set her ablaze. She has sustained 25% burns and is stable," Additional SP Narsinghpur Sandeep Bhuria told TOI.
He added, "The accused escaped after the incident, but was arrested within hours."
"The actual cause that triggered the incident will be clear once the investigations are over. The accused and victim were known to each other," Bhuria further told TOI.
Sources said one of the possible reasons behind the crime could be a complaint the victim made earlier. On Independence Day, she wore a saree to school, and the accused allegedly passed objectionable comments. The teacher objected and complained, after which the accused is believed to have held a grudge. When asked about it, Bhuria said, "We are investigating from this and all other aspects too. The investigation is going on.
