Gondek urges federal government to consider Prairie Economic Gateway for national interest projects list
Calgary's mayor is hoping a future 'inland port' and trade hub will make its way onto Prime Minister Mark Carney's national projects list. Article content Prairie Economic Gateway is a partnership between Calgary and Rocky View County that aims to develop Alberta's first rail-served inland port. According to Gondek, the interprovincial trade and manufacturing hub, which would be on the border of southeast Calgary and Rocky View County, will enable more industrial development and bolster Canada's manufacturing sector. Article content Article content Article content 'This nation-building project is ready to proceed as a public-private partnership, offering immediate and long-term benefits for Alberta and for Canada,' Gondek wrote in an Aug. 1 letter to federal energy minister Tim Hodgson and intergovernmental affairs minister Dominic LeBlanc. Article content Article content City council approved early plans for the Prairie Economic Gateway concept in February. The rail-served port, which Gondek said will also include manufacturing and logistics facilities, is estimated to take 10 to 12 years to come to fruition. Article content 'Prairie Economic Gateway has the ability to become the strongest inland port in North America,' Gondek said. 'And this isn't just a someday idea. The planning is done, the approvals are in place and the partners are ready.' Bill C-5, the One Canadian Economy and Building Canada Act, intends to accelerate the approval and development of infrastructure projects deemed to be in the national interest. The legislation received parliamentary approval in June, and Carney has asked each province to compile a list of potential projects for consideration. Article content Article content The projects should fulfill a number of criteria, such as strengthening Canada's autonomy and resiliency, providing economic benefit, advancing the interests of Indigenous Peoples and aligning with federal climate objectives. Article content The city claims Prairie Economic Gateway will generate $7 billion in economic activity and create more than 30,000 jobs by leveraging the inland port's location near the existing CPKC rail network, allowing for greater interprovincial trade and improved access to global distribution markets. Article content 'Minister Hodgson has been clear that ports and trade infrastructure will be the backbone of Canada's next wave of nation-building investments,' Gondek said at a news conference on Monday. 'Prairie Economic Gateway complements and in most cases, out competes what other regions are putting forward, while others are focused on single season ports or limited routes.'

Ottawa Senators, NCC complete sale agreement for 11 acres at LeBreton Flats
This artist's conception was submitted in June 2022, when the National Capital Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Capital Sports Development Inc, a group led by the Ottawa Senators, for the development of a major event centre at LeBreton Flats. The Senators are now the focus of bidding that will result in new owners. This represents a significant step in what has been a lengthy process of the Senators moving closer. Postmedia reported on July 16 that the two sides were on track for a deal, and the hope was that it would be approved by the NCC's board of directors next month. 'We are pleased to reach an agreement of purchase and sale with the NCC to take the next step in this process,' Senators president and chief executive officer Cyril Leeder said in a statement. Please try again 'There are still many more hurdles to clear, and we look forward to working with the NCC and other stakeholders to achieve our shared vision of creating an event centre at LeBreton Flats that can be enjoyed by our Ottawa-Gatineau community.' Both sides will now go ahead with the next steps in the project, which include zoning, design and approvals, as well as decontamination of the land parcels to prepare for construction. Naturally, NCC officials were thrilled to get this part of the agreement across the finish line. The project, which is expected to be led by Claridge Homes, will include new housing, a hotel and a district that will include restaurants. 'The promise of a major events centre will provide a lively and convenient attraction for residents and visitors, inject new energy and excitement into the core of the Nation's Capital and further catalyze the development of LeBreton Flats,' said Tobi Nussbaum, CEO of the NCC. 'This agreement builds on the two previous real estate transactions completed by the NCC since 2022 on the Building LeBreton project that will see over 2000 new housing units, along with new retail and commercial spaces built on the site.' The final deal didn't happen as quickly as Senators owner Michael Andlauer would like, but there were no shortage of issues to overcome, and it is a complex agreement. Andlauer has stated he'd like to bring the club to downtown Ottawa because that's where the fans have indicated they want it to be. The NCC had set aside a 10-acre piece of land on Albert Street between Preston Street and the City Centre, just west of Ottawa's new super-library, which is now under construction. It's believed the arena project will also include a hotel and residential space.
