Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as the 'largest NGO in the world' as he praised the organisation for its selfless devotion to 'nation building', saying its 'service to the nation constitutes a proud and golden chapter'. (ANI) The RSS, which is celebrating its centenary, is the ideological fount of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister paid tribute to the Sangh's volunteers who contributed to the nation over the years. This is the first time that the PM has acknowledged the role of the RSS in his Independence Day speech. 'Our clear belief is that this country is not built by governments alone; it is not built only by those who hold the reins of state power; it is not built solely by those who administer governance. This nation is built by the toil of crores of people — by sages, saints, scientists, teachers, farmers, soldiers, workers, labourers — everyone's efforts contribute to nation-building. Contributions come from individuals and from institutions alike,' he said. A former pracharak or a full time volunteer of the Sangh, the PM said it was with 'great pride' that he was mentioning one such institution, the RSS. 'One hundred years ago, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was founded. These 100 years of service to the nation constitute a proud and golden chapter. With the resolve of nation-building through character-building, with the aim of serving Maa Bharati, the swayamsevaks have, for a century, dedicated their lives to the welfare of the motherland,' he said, adding that 'service, dedication, organisation, and unmatched discipline' have been the RSS's hallmarks. 'In a sense, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is the world's largest NGO, with a century-long history of devotion,' Modi said. 'Today, from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I salute all the swayamsevaks who have contributed to this century-long journey of national service, and the nation takes pride in this grand and dedicated journey of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which will continue to inspire us.' The PM's praise for the organisation was perceived by party leaders as a statement that scotches speculation of unease between the party and the political mentor. 'As PM, he has ensured that the ideology and belief system of the Sangh found resonance in policies… from the government's thrust on social welfare to the construction of the [Ayodhya] Ram Temple and now the setting up of a demographic mission are all inspired by the Sangh's ideology,' a senior party leader saic on the condition of anonymity. The Opposition, however, criticised PM Modi for making a reference to the Sangh in his public address. AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi described Modi's praise of RSS as an 'insult to the freedom struggle'. 'The RSS and its ideological allies served as British foot soldiers. They never joined the fight for independence and hated Gandhi more than they ever opposed the British,' Owaisi said in a post on X. 'The ideology of Hindutva believes in exclusion and is antithetical to the values of our Constitution. Modi could have gone to Nagpur to praise RSS as a swayamsevak, why did he have to do it from the Red Fort as the Prime Minister?'

New Delhi: India's demography is being changed as a part of a well thought-out conspiracy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged on Friday as he announced a high-powered demographic mission to tackle the 'massive crisis lurking over India'. The country's demography is being changed as a part of a well thought-out conspiracy. A new crisis is being created. And these intruders are snatching away employment opportunities for our youth... They are targeting our sisters and daughters. This will not be tolerated. These intruders are usurping the land of innocent tribals. This country will not tolerate such acts,' Modi said in his customary address to the nation on Independence Day. He added: 'When there is a demographic change, especially in the border states, it creates a crisis for national security. It creates a crisis for the country's unity, integrity and development and creates social tension. No country can give away its land to illegal immigrants. No country in the world can afford to do this. How can India allow this to happen?' Referring to the struggle for India's independence, Modi said: 'Our forefathers have sacrificed themselves to give us freedom and an independent India. It is our duty towards them that we do not tolerate such activities in our country. That will be the real tribute to them.' 'I want to say from the Red Fort, we have decided to start a high-powered demographic mission. With this mission we will tackle the massive crisis lurking over India,' he said, adding that the mission will work within a stipulated time and with a well thought-out strategy. The PM's comments come amid a major political tussle over the identification and deportation of undocumented Bangladeshis in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled states. The Opposition has attacked Modi over the 'harassment' of Bengali-speaking Muslims in the garb of this exercise. Undocumented immigration is a major issue in Assam and West Bengal, the two border states going to the polls next year. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched what he calls a drive to evict and send back Bangladeshis. In June, Sarma said 330 illegal Bangladeshis were sent back. In July, a political slugfest broke out between West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and her Assam counterpart Sarma on social media on July 19 with the two leaders accusing each other of engaging in divisive and appeasement politics Banerjee alleged that the BJP was persecuting Bengali speakers in Assam. 'This divisive agenda of the BJP in Assam has crossed all limits and people of Assam will fight back. I stand with every fearless citizen who is fighting for the dignity of their language and identity, and their democratic rights,' she posted on X on July 19. Soon after, Sarma hit back stating: 'Didi (Mamata Banerjee), let me remind you—In Assam, we are not fighting our own people. We are fearlessly resisting the ongoing, unchecked Muslim infiltration from across the border, which has already caused an alarming demographic shift. In several districts, Hindus are now on the verge of becoming a minority in their own land,' he wrote on X.

New Delhi The first Made in India chips will be available in the market by year-end, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day speech on Friday, ruing the opportunity to get ahead in the semiconductor space that was lost 50-60 years ago. (ANI) In a speech with repeated references to the importance of self-reliance, the PM recalled how plans for a semiconductor factory began 50-60 years ago but the files were left to 'atak, latak and bhatak,' ( stuck, dangling and meandeing) in bureaucratic limbo. Now, he added, the country is in 'mission mode,' with six semiconductor units in the pipeline and four new ones already approved. India could have been competing with other countries, such as Taiwan, the US, China and South Korea, who are leading in production, design and export of semiconductors, Modi said. Taiwan dominates nearly all of the world's most advanced chip production, making about 90% of these semiconductors, mostly through Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the largest chipmaker and a key supplier to Apple and Nvidia. 'This is a technology-driven century. Whichever country embraced technology, they reached great heights…You'll be surprised to know that semiconductors, which have now become the backbone of many nations, the files of those plans in India were stuck, left and forgotten. The thinking behind semiconductors was killed. We lost 50-60 years. Many countries in the meanwhile continued to gain strength in semiconductors. But today, we are rid of that burden,' he said. 'India is reclaiming 50–60 years of lost semiconductor opportunity at speed — with $21B in committed projects, 10 units under construction, and state policies enabling investment and ease of doing business. Backed by a thriving design ecosystem and government–industry collaboration, India is poised to become a trusted global hub for semiconductor design-to-manufacturing,' said Ashok Chandak, President India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) and SEMI India. Industry experts told HT that the landscape has changed. Several states now have dedicated policies with incentives and easier business rules to attract investment. India's design sector is also stepping up product development, supporting the manufacturing drive to build a full design-to-production value chain, they added. To be sure, Semiconductor Complex Ltd was envisioned in the 1970s and started operations in 1984 in Mohali. It continues to exist as the Semi Conductor Laboratory , a state-owned company. Under the IT ministry's India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), 10 semiconductor units have been announced so far, most focused on assembly and packaging, with only two dedicated to fabrication. As HT reported earlier, the first 'made-in-India' chip expected this year will be a packaged chip, not one produced in a fab. Announcing four new units on Tuesday, IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said there is intense competition brewing between three semiconductor facilities to roll out the first such chip before 2025. Of the 10 semiconductor units approved till now, four are in Gujarat, two in Odisha, and one each in Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab. The chips coming out of these units will be used in sectors such as consumer electronics, automotive, defence, telecommunications, mobile phones, renewable energy, among others.
