4 days after Kolkata rape, cops seize hockey stick, clothing of suspects; collect DNA

KOLKATA: The hockey stick with which ex-Trinamool Chhatra Parishad union president Manojit Mishra inflicted a head injury on the 24-year-old Kolkata law student he and two others allegedly gang-raped on campus last Wednesday now sits inside an evidence bag at Lalbazar, the city police headquarters.
So do the red kurta, light brown six-pocket trousers and black shorts the prime suspect was purportedly wearing during the crime.
In four days since the assault, Kolkata Police's special investigation team has moved with urgency and meticulousness that contrast with its contentious handling of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case last Aug. Police said Sunday they had collected DNA samples from all three suspects and seized items of clothing from their homes in Kalighat, Tiljala and Howrah, reports Tamaghna Banerjee.
From the guard room floor where the crime occurred, forensic teams have retrieved hair strands, said to be evidence of how the survivor fought back before giving up. "I just lay like a dead body," she wrote in her complaint.

The real smoking gun? Mishra's cellphone. Co-suspects Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee – both law students – allegedly filmed the assault on Mishra's orders, making sure to capture the survivor's face clearly in the frame. Those videos, sent for verification to the cyber forensics lab in Kolkata's Salt Lake, tell a story that contradicts Mishra's claims of 'consensual sex' with the woman whose refusal to accept his marriage proposal allegedly triggered the assault.
CCTV footage backs the survivor's version of what happened between 7.30pm and 10.50pm Wednesday. Cameras captured her bolting for the main gate, only to be dragged back to the guard room. They also caught the colour of Mishra's kurta, later matched to the one seized from his Kalighat home.
Based on the footage, investigators have calculated that 25 students were on campus that day, and seven were in the union room just before the assault.
Police have asked authorities of the south Kolkata law college to provide their names, phone numbers and addresses.
Mishra's phone also revealed more than just Wednesday's horror. Sources said investigators found what his circle already knew — a cache of doctored photos of female students, their faces superimposed on pornographic images and shared on WhatsApp groups.
The nine-member SIT led by an officer of the rank of assistant commissioner spent Sunday at Pramit's Howrah home, combing through his computer for more videos. Neighbours protested, but the team – bolstered by the addition of four sub-inspectors, one of them a woman officer – stayed put for two hours. What they found there is still to be disclosed.
Sources said a relative of the survivor's family told police that they were satisfied with the probe for now and are expecting a speedy trial.

Kolkata gangrape case: ‘Red kurta, brown pants' – Police recovers CRUCIAL evidence seen in CCTV footage

Kolkata Gangrape Case: The investigation into the horrific alleged rape of a 21-year-old student inside South Calcutta Law College has taken a critical turn, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police recovered key forensic evidence, including clothes worn by the main accused—referred to as 'M'—that matched those seen in CCTV footage, according to Anandabaazar Patrika. The Bengali daily refused to identify 'M' in thior reports. The SIT also visited the homes of all three accused — Monojit Mishra, Jayeb, and Pramit — and collected multiple samples. Kolkata Police officials revealed that a red kurta, brown trousers with six pockets, and black shorts were recovered from Kolkata gangrape prime accused 'M's residence. These were the exact clothes the Kolkata gangrape case prime accused Monojit Mishra was seen wearing during the time of the incident, according to the Bengali media report citing the CCTV footage. The items have been sent for forensic analysis and are expected to play a vital role in corroborating the victim's account. The SIT, initially comprising five officers and now expanded to nine, is led by Assistant Commissioner (South Suburbs) Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal. A female officer has also joined the probe. The team visited the homes of all three accused on Sunday, collecting clothing, electronic devices, and other physical evidence. Investigators are probing whether the accused used any other gadgets beyond their mobile phones. According to ABP report, the south Kolkata law college gangrape survivor was taken back to the crime scene to help reconstruct the sequence of events. The 21-year-old law student told officers that the sexual assault began inside the student union room of the south Kolkata law college, but escalated when she was dragged into the guard's room, where the rape occurred. The gangrape survivor claimed to have suffered a head injury during the assault and alleged that one of the accused attempted to strike her with a hockey stick. The stick has since been recovered, and strands of torn hair were also found at the scene, now sent for DNA testing. CCTV footage from 7:30 PM to 10:50 PM on 25 June has been collected. Investigators say the footage supports the survivor's claims and places the accused at the scene. The security guard, who allegedly failed to intervene, has also been arrested. The gangrape survivor's family has stated they do not want a CBI probe at this stage and have expressed faith in the Kolkata Police investigation. According to several local media reports, the arrested guard Pinaki Bandopadhyay has revealed to investigators that another female student was present at the union room throughout the day before the survivor was assaulted. Around 8:30 pm, that female student left the college. On the day of the incident, Pinaki was assigned to the night shift, while another security guard had been on duty during the day shift, whose statement is also likely to be recorded as part of the investigation. According to a News18 report, the police have prepared a list of 17 individuals who were present at the college after 4pm on the day of the incident. Two of them have been questioned by the SIT.

Kolkata Gang-Rape Probe: Security Guard's ‘Another Woman' Claim, A Red Kurta Under Lens

Last Updated: On the day of the incident, Pinaki, the security guard, was assigned to the night shift, while another security guard had been on duty during the day shift Probing the Kasba college gangrape case, Kolkata Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) recovered the same clothes worn by the prime accused, identified as 'M', from his residence, as seen in the CCTV footage from the day of the crime, reported Bengali news website The SIT also visited the homes of all three accused — Manojit, Jayeb, and Pramit — and collected multiple samples. Adding to the gravity of the case, investigators revealed that during the incident, the accused snatched the mobile phone of the college's night-shift security guard, Pinaki Bandopadhyay, allegedly to prevent him from calling for help or alerting anyone about the crime. During questioning, Pinaki also revealed that another female student was present in the college's union room throughout the day before the victim was assaulted. Around 8:30 pm, that student left the college. Sources say that police are likely to summon and question that female student as well as part of the investigation. On the day of the incident, Pinaki was assigned to the night shift, while another security guard had been on duty during the day shift, whose statement is also likely to be recorded as part of the investigation. According to sources, the police have prepared a list of 17 individuals who were present at the college after 4pm on the day of the incident. Out of them, two were questioned yesterday, while the remaining are scheduled to be questioned today as part of the ongoing investigation. An SIT official confirmed that the clothes seen in the CCTV footage, worn by 'M' at the time of the assault, were found during the search at his home. The SIT recovered a red kurta and brown pants with six pockets, which match the clothes captured in the CCTV from the night of the crime. A pair of black shorts was also seized during the search. An officer stated, 'The clothes recovered from the house match exactly with what was seen in the CCTV footage from the day of the incident. These garments are now key forensic evidence in the case." These clothes have now been sent for forensic examination, as investigators believe they could serve as crucial evidence in the case. Police are hopeful that the forensic analysis will help strengthen the case against the accused. Officers believe that the matching garments will play a critical role in corroborating the CCTV evidence with physical proof recovered from the accused's residence. The SIT also carried out searches at the homes of the other two accused, seizing clothes and several other samples. In addition to physical evidence, investigators are also checking whether the accused were using any electronic devices beyond their mobile phones, as part of efforts to gather further clues and digital evidence related to the crime. 'Who's Protecting Him?': BJP Attacks TMC On Kolkata Rape Accused's College Admission

Last Updated: A fresh controversy erupted after the BJP raised serious questions regarding the college admission of Zaib Ahmed, one of the accused in the Kolkata rape case. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trained its guns on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government once again over the Kolkata law student rape case, by raising questions on the college admission of one of the accused. Four accused – identified as Manojit Mishra, 31, Zaib Ahmed, 19, Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20, and Pinaki Banerjee, 55 – have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 24-year-old law student from South Calcutta Law College in Kasba. A fresh controversy erupted after BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya raised serious questions regarding the college admission of Zaib Ahmed, despite scoring a 'dismal" rank in the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET). 'Zaib Ahmed, one of the accused in the South Calcutta Law College Rape Case, was admitted to the same college—South Kolkata Law College under Calcutta University—despite securing a dismal 2634 rank in CULET-UG 2024!" he said on X. 'Meanwhile, meritorious and law-abiding students with far better ranks are being denied admission. Welcome to Mamata Banerjee's Bengal—where the rule of law is mocked and institutions are systematically destroyed to protect criminals with political connections." Malviya further demanded to know why Zaib was given a seat in the prestigious law college and who was protecting him from prosecution. Zaib and others have been arrested and charged under multiple sections related to sexual assault and criminal conspiracy. They were accused of raping the law student after the girl rejected a marriage proposal from the prime accused, Manojit Mishra. On Sunday, people from diverse backgrounds united in solidarity, participating in protests against the gang rape of a law college student in Kolkata. Demonstrations took place outside South Calcutta Law College, the alleged crime scene, and Kasba Police Station, where the First Information Report (FIR) was filed. Protests spread to different parts of the city by evening, including Jadavpur, Rashbehari, and Harzra. Supporters of 'Abhaya Mancha" a group created after rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital and Medical College on August 9, 2024, participated in the protests, along with students and the elderly. The Kolkata Police has formed a five-member special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the alleged gang rape of the student. The police were also trying to find out whether the entire crime was pre-planned or not, a police official said. First Published: June 30, 2025, 12:03 IST
