Federal departments in Sabah discuss key issues

LABUAN: A total of 106 federal departments and 42 federal statutory bodies in Sabah gathered here for the Federal Departments and Federal Statutory Bodies Liaison Meeting for the State of Sabah, aimed at addressing key development, infrastructure and governance issues. The meeting, chaired by Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa, was held at Palm Beach Resort and Spa and brought together senior federal representatives, including from the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) for inter-agency coordination and strategic planning.
Advertisement Among the major issues discussed were the progress of the Pan Borneo Highway project, preparations for the coming Sabah state election and efforts to strengthen public service delivery. The meeting also focused on five clusters under the ongoing civil service reform agenda: education, health, transport, economic generation and national unity. One of the important matters raised was the need to carry out a thorough study on the quality of the water supply in Sabah to ensure it meets national safety and health standards. Rosli said federal agencies emphasised that access to clean and safe water remains essential to public wellbeing. As part of the programme, Labuan Corporation (LC) was also given a slot to promote the upcoming Borneo Flora Festival (BFF), which is expected to attract regional visitors and boost the island's tourism profile. The presentation highlighted the festival's potential to showcase Labuan's natural beauty, community creativity and economic vibrancy. 'This meeting is not only about strengthening coordination among federal agencies but also about contributing to Labuan's economy through strategic engagement. 'Even a short visit like this has a positive impact on local businesses,' he added. The two-day programme began on June 15 with a site visit to local community-based enterprises, including an anchovy-processing business in Kampung Bebuloh, reflecting Labuan's potential in small-scale industries and tourism. Booms heard over Jerusalem, Tel Aviv after Iran missile warning
JERUSALEM: Loud booms were heard over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Tuesday, AFP journalists reported, after air raid sirens sounded in several parts of Israel and the military warned of incoming Iranian missiles. 'A short while ago, sirens sounded in several areas across Israel following the identification of missiles launched from Iran toward the State of Israel,' the military said in a statement. It added that the air force was 'operating to intercept and strike where necessary to eliminate the threat.' Around 20 minutes later, the army released a statement saying people were allowed to leave protected spaces in several areas across the country. It said search and rescue teams were operating in several locations where 'reports of fallen projectiles were received.' In a statement on Telegram, the Israeli police reported that 'missiles and shrapnel fell in the Tel Aviv area, causing material damage but no injuries.' The fire and rescue service said there was an initial report of a 'missile strike and fire' in the Dan district, an area surrounding Tel Aviv. 'Around 08:45 (0545 GMT), numerous calls were received... regarding a missile strike and a fire in the Gush Dan area. Firefighting forces are on their way to the scene,' it said in a statement. Despite growing calls for the longtime foes to end hostilities, neither Israel nor Iran showed any signs of cutting short the missile blitz that kicked off Friday, when Israel launched an unprecedented series of aerial raids targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities.

Russian strikes kill 14 in ‘horrific' attack on Kyiv
KYIV: Russian strikes killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens in Kyiv in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday called 'one of the most horrific attacks' on the capital. Zelensky said 'an entire section of an apartment block' was destroyed and rescuers were searching under the rubble for possible survivors. AFP journalists heard drones flying over the city and explosions ringing out as Ukrainian air defence systems opened fire during the Russian barrage. Dozens of Kyiv residents were taking shelter in a metro station in central Kyiv, sleeping on mats, exchanging information on the drone and missile threat or reassuring pets, AFP journalists reported. Some 27 locations in Kyiv were hit, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said. One person was also killed and 10 wounded in a strike on Odesa, with Zelensky saying that a total of 440 drones and 32 missiles were used in the strikes nationwide. 'Kyiv has faced one of the most horrific attacks,' Zelensky wrote on Facebook. 'Right now in Kyiv, efforts are underway to rescue people from under the rubble of an ordinary residential building -- it's still unclear how many remain trapped,' he said. He urged the international community not to 'turn a blind eye'. Russian President Vladimir 'Putin does this solely because he can afford to continue the war. He wants the war to go on,' he said. Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said in a social media post: 'This is how Russia fights -- it kills civilians in ordinary homes, deliberately.' US citizen dead Interior Minister Igor Klymenko wrote on Telegram: '27 locations in different districts of the capital came under enemy fire tonight'. He added that 'residential buildings, educational institutions and critical infrastructure facilities' had all been hit. 'The death toll has risen to 14 people. As of now, 44 people have been injured in Kyiv,' Klymenko said. He added that six others had been injured in Odesa and another in Chernigiv. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko had earlier reported the death of a US citizen in a Russian attack on the capital's Solomyansky district. 'During the attack on Kyiv... a 62-year-old US citizen died in a house opposite to the place where medics were providing assistance to the injured,' Klitschko said on Telegram. Yermak slammed the new Russian strikes on 'residential buildings in Kyiv', saying on Telegram that Moscow was 'continuing its war against civilians'. More than three years into its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Moscow has kept up its attacks despite efforts by the United States to broker a ceasefire. Talks have stalled. Moscow has rejected the 'unconditional' truce demanded by Kyiv and its European allies, while Ukraine has dismissed Russia's demands as 'ultimatums'. On Monday, Zelensky had said he hoped to speak with his US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada. But the Ukrainian leader was expected to arrive at the G7 after the departure of the American president, who cut short his stay in the Canadian Rockies as Israel pounded Iran.

Petronas awards Temaris gas contract to support energy goals
KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has awarded the Temaris Cluster small field asset production sharing contract (PSC) to Seascape Energy Asia (One) Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned unit of Seascape Energy Asia plc. The contract was awarded via Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), Petronas' upstream resource management arm. The Temaris Cluster, located in the Malay Basin offshore Peninsular Malaysia, comprises the Tembakau and Mengkuang gas fields. In a statement today, Petronas said this is the second PSC awarded under the three discovered resource opportunities clusters offered in the Malaysia Bid Round 2025. It said the cluster is located near existing production infrastructure, enabling cost efficiencies and faster development. MPM senior vice-president Datuk Ir Bacho Pilong said the Temaris project is expected to produce about 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with first production targeted in 2029. "This marks another step in supporting national energy security while enabling growth in the upstream sector," he said. Seascape will be the sole contractor under the PSC, making its operational debut in Malaysia. Separately, Petronas has signed technical evaluation agreements with AFED TEXCAL Energy Ventures for the Langkasuka Basin in the Straits of Malacca, and with POSCO International for the Layang-Layang Basin off Sabah. These efforts are part of its broader push to explore frontier basins. Petronas, through MPM, manages Malaysia's petroleum resources and oversees upstream exploration and production activities.
