U.S. Open: Biggest Names to Miss the Cut at Oakmont

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The halfway point of the U.S. Open is here, which means half the field is heading home. Oakmont Country Club brought the carnage as there were just five players at even par or better through 36 holes. There were only seven under-par scores in the second round alone, with a few players still having to finish up on Saturday morning. Sam Burns set the tone for the day with his historic 5-under 65 to get to 3-under overall. Max Greyserman and Jason Day each signed for 3-under 67s. Viktor Hovland shot a 2-under 68 to get to 1-under overall. He is in solo third and is two shots back of Burns. These guys had to minimize the mistakes to break par at Oakmont, and very few did. More Photo byOakmont flexed its muscles and sent home a lot of top-tier talent despite many of them being considered among the favorites. The cut line ended up being +7, and among those who made it by the skin of their teeth was the No. 2 ranked player in the world. Rory McIlroy let his emotions out on Friday by throwing his club and eventually destroying a tee marker. The Northern Irishman rallied and closed with two birdies in his final four holes to sign for a 2-over 72 and to sit at +6 overall. Biggest names to miss the cut at 2025 U.S. Open After 36 holes, it is wild to see the big-time names headed home with their tail between their legs. Let's look at the guys who will not get a part of the $21.5 million purse awarded by the USGA. — Ludvig Åberg (72-76) +8 — Wyndham Clark (74-74) +8 — Phil Mickelson (74-74) +8 — Min Woo Lee (75-74) +9 — Tommy Fleetwood (74-75) +9 — Bryson DeChambeau (73-77) +10 — Sepp Straka (78-73) +11 — Justin Thomas (76-76) +12 — Justin Rose (77-77) +14 — Shane Lowry (79-78) +17 Five European Ryder Cup players could not get anything going at Oakmont, which could be good for Team USA. Bethpage Black and Oakmont are slightly similar, being two of the most challenging golf courses in the world. The most surprising players on this list, though, have to be Shane Lowry, Ludvig Åberg, and Bryson DeChambeau. Lowry led for 54 holes in 2016 at Oakmont, and Åberg started the tournament with a decent score on his first nine. However, this venue gave them both fits and challenged them to their limits. DeChambeau, the reigning U.S. Open champion, struggled with his new irons. He shot a 7-over 77 on Friday. The Crushers GC captain was among the favorites this week. These guys are not even all of the popular names headed home early. Some honorable mentions that also missed the cut are Patrick Cantlay, Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, 2016 Oakmont US Open champion Dustin Johnson, Akshay Bhatia and Nick Dunlap. Rising Star Jayla Hang Wins 2025 Pan American Gymnastics Championship

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - FEBRUARY 24: Jayla Hang competes in the Beam during the Senior Women ... More competition of the 2024 USA Gymnastics Winter Cup at Kentucky International Convention Center on February 24, 2024 in Louisville, Kentucky. (Photo by) U.S. gymnast Jayla Hang won all-around gold at Friday's Pan American Gymnastics Championships in Panama City, Panama. Canadian challenger Lia Fontaine won silver, and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Hezly Rivera claimed bronze. A second-year senior on the U.S. National Team, Hang's win prolongs a stellar start to the 2025 season. In addition to winning silver at the U.S. Winter Cup in February, the 17-year-old claimed gold on floor exercise, silver on beam, and bronze on vault at the 2025 Osijek World Cup. Hang put together an impressive effort during Friday's joint-team qualification and all-around final. The future Florida Gator delivered the top scores on uneven bars and floor exercise, helping Team USA qualify in first for Saturday's team final and qualifying for all four individual event finals. Her total score marks the highest score at a continental championships in 2025. With her result at today's meet, Hang is in contention for a spot on the team headed to the 2025 World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia. While the Washington native ran away with the all-around title, many expected 2024 Olympic team gold medalist Hezly Rivera to challenge for the win. Though Rivera was strong on balance beam and floor, posting the highest mark on beam and the third-best on floor, a disastrous bar routine took the Olympian out of the gold medal race. Rivera incurred two falls on her routine, resulting in an automatic two-point deduction. Despite the disappointing bar routine, Rivera claimed bronze in the all-around and will compete for gold in the balance beam final. U.S. teammate Dulcy Caylor was just behind Rivera in the all-around, finishing fourth before the two-per-country rule. Caylor, a finalist at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, posted the highest U.S. score on vault, but will not participate in the apparatus final due to not competing a second vault. First-year senior Gabrielle Hardie delivered a nearly error-free effort across her three events on Friday. The 2024 U.S. junior silver medalist impressed with superior execution, qualifying for the event finals on balance beam and floor. After tweaking her ankle in training, 2024 Olympic alternate Tiana Sumanasekera was limited only to beam in Panama City. Though she missed the event final due to the two-per-country rule, Sumanasekera delivered a strong performance to finish third on the event in qualifying. The U.S. men and women enter Saturday's team finals as the top qualifiers. On Thursday, former Penn State gymnast Joshua Karnes clinched silver in the men's all-around behind Canadian Olympian Félix Dolci. The men will take to the floor at 9:30 a.m. ET, and the women later at 2:30 p.m. The Panam Sports Channel will live-stream all events.

Coco Gauff on LeBron James' aura while carrying flag during Olympics

Coco Gauff on LeBron James' aura while carrying flag during Olympics It has been a little while since LeBron James has won the NBA championship, but last summer, he experienced basketball glory in a different way. He joined Team USA men's basketball, and along with fellow veteran superstars such as Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant, he led the squad to a gold medal over France at the Summer Olympics. Those Olympics were held in France, and the opening ceremony featured boats traversing the Seine. James was chosen to bear the American flag along with Coco Gauff, one of the best women's tennis players in the world. Gauff recently won the French Open, and James co-signed a tweet by former President Barack Obama congratulating her on the victory. Gauff went on ESPN's "First Take" and talked about her experience bearing the United States flag along with James. 'We were just high on vibes,' Gauff said. 'We were both geeking out that we were holding the flag. He was huge. And it's crazy, that's how you know he's just iconic because you have a sea full of Olympians, the best in their sport and they like parted the Red Sea for him. You would have thought he was Moses the way he walked through with his shades on. So yeah, he has that untouchable aura for sure.' Team USA men's basketball was coming off a dismal performance in the FIBA World Cup during the summer of 2023, during which it failed to medal. James and some other superstars almost instantly volunteered to play in the 2024 Olympics in order to make sure the program returned to its rightful place at the top of FIBA competition. While James didn't score a lot of points during last summer's Olympics, his all-around play in multiple facets of the game led to him being named the MVP of the basketball tournament.
