
Forum to strengthen consumer safety in e-commerce in Oman
The event, titled 'E-commerce: Consumer Rights and Supplier Obligations', was held under the patronage of Omar bin Hamdan al Ismaili, Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
The forum brought together stakeholders from government institutions, the private sector and civil society to address key challenges facing digital commerce, including consumer rights, supplier obligations and legal frameworks governing the sector. Discussions also covered the risks of electronic fraud and the role of regulatory institutions in ensuring a secure online shopping environment.
Mozna bint Rashid al Maamari, Director of Communications and Media at CPA, said the forum served as 'an open dialogue platform bringing together consumers, suppliers, regulatory bodies and others interested in the digital economy'.
'The goal is to develop Oman's e-commerce ecosystem by raising awareness and ensuring a safer digital marketplace,' she said. 'This gathering supports a future-oriented vision that promotes a robust digital economy, empowering consumers to make informed and safe purchasing decisions.'
The day's programme was divided into two discussion sessions. The first included a presentation by Azza al Kindi from MoCIIP on the regulation of e-commerce in Oman. This was followed by a talk by Khalid al Siyabi from CPA on safe digital shopping practices, and a presentation from the Central Bank of Oman's Hajar bint Qambar al Ajmi on financial consumer protection.
In the second session, Arwa bint Obaid al Zaabi from the Ministry of Economy, spoke about digital fraud from a behavioural economics perspective. This was followed by remarks from Hilal al Alawi of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority on postal services and e-commerce, and a presentation by Rashid al Alawi from the Ministry of Transport and Communications on postal sector policy.
The event concluded with an open discussion among attendees. The forum coincided with CPA's ongoing awareness campaign 'For Safe Shopping', which seeks to encourage secure online purchasing habits. The initiative aligns with Oman Vision 2040.

Future Salalah City to host 60,000 residents in eco-integrated coastal project
SALALAH: Oman's Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has unveiled plans for Future Salalah City, a landmark urban development project that will span over 7 million square metres and provide 12,000 housing units designed to accommodate around 60,000 people. Announcing the project during a field update in Dhofar, Ahmed al Kamyani, Director General of Lands at the Ministry, said the new city has been carefully planned to integrate with the natural landscape, particularly given its location along the scenic Al-Tawiyyah coastal strip, which includes sensitive ecological areas such as coastal lagoons (khors). 'The city is being developed according to high environmental and urban planning standards,' al Kamyani stated. 'Its design respects the characteristics of the site, ensuring a balanced relationship between built-up areas and natural features.' Al Kamyani added that the project opens up a broad range of investment opportunities for all categories of private sector investors, as part of the government's vision to stimulate public–private partnerships in real estate and infrastructure. Ownership mechanisms for residential and commercial units will be announced at a later stage, he said. Future Salalah City is part of the Ministry's broader strategic planning initiatives under Oman Vision 2040, with a focus on sustainable urbanisation, coastal protection, and economic diversification in the Dhofar Governorate.

Oman's first waste-to-energy project takes shape in Barka
Muscat – In a significant step toward sustainable development and circular economy goals, Oman is advancing its first large-scale waste-to-energy (WTE) project in Barka, located in the South Batinah governorate. The strategic initiative, being developed with an investment of RO2.9mn, marks a shift from conventional landfill-based waste disposal to energy recovery through advanced incineration technology. The project aims to process approximately 3,000 tons of municipal solid waste daily, with a projected power generation capacity ranging between 95 and 100 megawatts. Expected to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2031, the facility will contribute to reducing around 302,000 tons of waste annually. It will also supply an estimated 260 GWh of renewable electricity per year to the national grid, reinforcing Oman's commitment to green energy solutions. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources says the project is a cornerstone in achieving Oman Vision 2040 goals related to environmental protection, sustainability, and efficient resource utilization. It also aligns with broader efforts to cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on landfills. Once operational, the Barka waste-to-energy plant is expected to deliver far-reaching environmental and economic benefits, including job creation, innovation in waste management, and enhanced energy security.

Minister of Labour meets business leaders in Salalah to strengthen private sector partnership
SALALAH: Oman's Minister of Labour, Dr. Mahad bin Said Baaouin, met with business owners and investors in Salalah on Wednesday to discuss strategies for building a sustainable labor market and advancing private sector growth in line with Oman Vision 2040. The meeting, held at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment on the sidelines of the second edition of the Labour Forum, brought together entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, and investors from Dhofar Governorate. In his remarks, Dr. Baaouin highlighted the ministry's efforts to modernise labor market tools, streamline regulations, and expand support to private sector institutions. He stressed that the ministry's employment initiatives, developed in partnership with employers, aim to match market needs with the skills of Omani jobseekers through targeted training and innovation-led projects. 'The next stage requires us to accelerate our efforts, integrate public and private sector capabilities, and ensure stability in the labour market to keep pace with global changes,' he said, adding that SMEs, artificial intelligence, and innovation will be central to economic growth. Business leaders raised issues affecting their operations, including administrative procedures, Omanisation requirements in certain sectors, and the need for greater flexibility in recruitment and workforce development. Discussions also covered opportunities to expand existing projects, attract investment, and strengthen training programmes for national cadres. The minister emphasised the importance of Dhofar's rapidly expanding private sector, particularly in tourism, which is witnessing strong growth during the Khareef season. He also acknowledged the role of SMEs in job creation and local economic diversification. The Labour Forum serves as a national platform for dialogue between government, business, and academia. This year's edition focuses on aligning human capital development, entrepreneurship, and economic diversification with Oman Vision 2040's strategic objectives.
