Oman's first waste-to-energy project takes shape in Barka
The strategic initiative, being developed with an investment of RO2.9mn, marks a shift from conventional landfill-based waste disposal to energy recovery through advanced incineration technology. The project aims to process approximately 3,000 tons of municipal solid waste daily, with a projected power generation capacity ranging between 95 and 100 megawatts.
Expected to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of 2031, the facility will contribute to reducing around 302,000 tons of waste annually. It will also supply an estimated 260 GWh of renewable electricity per year to the national grid, reinforcing Oman's commitment to green energy solutions.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources says the project is a cornerstone in achieving Oman Vision 2040 goals related to environmental protection, sustainability, and efficient resource utilization. It also aligns with broader efforts to cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on landfills.
Once operational, the Barka waste-to-energy plant is expected to deliver far-reaching environmental and economic benefits, including job creation, innovation in waste management, and enhanced energy security.

Minister of Labour meets business leaders in Salalah to strengthen private sector partnership
SALALAH: Oman's Minister of Labour, Dr. Mahad bin Said Baaouin, met with business owners and investors in Salalah on Wednesday to discuss strategies for building a sustainable labor market and advancing private sector growth in line with Oman Vision 2040. The meeting, held at the Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment on the sidelines of the second edition of the Labour Forum, brought together entrepreneurs, small and medium enterprise (SME) owners, and investors from Dhofar Governorate. In his remarks, Dr. Baaouin highlighted the ministry's efforts to modernise labor market tools, streamline regulations, and expand support to private sector institutions. He stressed that the ministry's employment initiatives, developed in partnership with employers, aim to match market needs with the skills of Omani jobseekers through targeted training and innovation-led projects. 'The next stage requires us to accelerate our efforts, integrate public and private sector capabilities, and ensure stability in the labour market to keep pace with global changes,' he said, adding that SMEs, artificial intelligence, and innovation will be central to economic growth. Business leaders raised issues affecting their operations, including administrative procedures, Omanisation requirements in certain sectors, and the need for greater flexibility in recruitment and workforce development. Discussions also covered opportunities to expand existing projects, attract investment, and strengthen training programmes for national cadres. The minister emphasised the importance of Dhofar's rapidly expanding private sector, particularly in tourism, which is witnessing strong growth during the Khareef season. He also acknowledged the role of SMEs in job creation and local economic diversification. The Labour Forum serves as a national platform for dialogue between government, business, and academia. This year's edition focuses on aligning human capital development, entrepreneurship, and economic diversification with Oman Vision 2040's strategic objectives.

Tamkeen & Sumo exhibition backs SME growth in Dhofar
Salalah – More than 75 small and medium enterprises from sectors including tourism, retail, food and beverage, and handicrafts are taking part in an exhibition called 'Tamkeen & Sumo', which opened in Salalah on Tuesday evening. Organised by the SME Committee of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), the exhibition at Atina Land opened under the patronage of H H Sayyid Harib bin Thuwaini al Said, Assistant Secretary-General for Conferences in Council of Ministers. The event will run till August 20. Sheikh Faisal bin Abdullah al Rawas, Chairman of OCCI, said the exhibition 'goes beyond a promotional platform' and offers 'a space for engagement and partnership building between SMEs and business sectors'. He added that Tamkeen & Sumo reflects the chamber's efforts to support SMEs as a core part of the national economy in line with Oman Vision 2040. 'Through this exhibition, we aim to enable SMEs to access new markets, explore cooperation and investment opportunities, and engage in knowledge exchange with entrepreneurs and support entities.' Sheikh Ahmed bin Amer al Musalhi, Chairman of the SME Committee, described the exhibition as 'an opportunity to promote SME products and services and boost their competitiveness in the local market'. He stressed that building business relations with private sector institutions is a key goal. 'We continue working to enhance SME participation in events and exhibitions, believing in their role in economic development, job creation and knowledge transfer,' he said. On the sidelines of the exhibition, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between OCCI's Social Investment Centre and the Business Development Centre, which owns the 'Hissaty' platform. The agreement aims to develop social investment tools that empower SME owners and align with Oman Vision 2040. According to organisers, the agreement is a strategic step towards fostering a culture of social investment within the business environment. The exhibition includes dedicated sections such as Entrepreneurs' Corner, Innovation Corner, Handicraft Workshops Corner and Junior Entrepreneur Corner. The latter showcases children's talent. It also features the Sohar International Competition to highlight brand identity and encourage creativity and excellence.
