Drive against footpath encroachments every Saturday
Issued to Zonal and Deputy Commissioners and marked to the Chief City Planner, Additional Chief City Planners, and the City Planners, the circular also directed for the drive to be carried on a minimum of one stretch per circle every week, in a joint operation with the Traffic Police as part of the 'Operation ROPE' (Removal of Obstructive Parking & Encroachments).
Under Operation ROPE, a large number of hawkers and vendors are already being removed from the road margins and footpaths. Recently, the displaced hawkers conducted a demonstration in front of the GHMC corporate office, demanding that the harassment be stopped.
MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, during a meeting, raised this issue and questioned if the GHMC wanted the vendors to become pickpockets.
Officials assure that the new phase will not target the vendors but the commercial entities which occupied footpaths to install their extensions such as steps, sign boards, kiosks, poles and other such impediments.
They are invoking the powers of the GHMC Commissioner under Section 405 to remove obstructions on the street, drain, channel etc. The objective is stated as having ease of traffic movement and facilitating pedestrian movement on footpaths.
This is not the first time GHMC is taking up such a drive. A similar drive was taken up after establishment of Enforcement, Vigilance & Disaster Management wing as part of GHMC, in 2018. Armed with excavator machinery, the EVDM personnel destroyed not mere sign boards, but even the ramps and steps built onto the road & footpath portions.
However, no attempt was made to build footpaths or roads on the reclaimed space. After a while, the shop owners rebuilt the steps or started using iron ladders instead.

Meeting reviews Ganesh festival arrangements
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R.V. Karnan has assured that roads damaged by continual rains will be repaired in time for the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. Addressing a convergence meeting he chaired on Monday to review the festival arrangements, Mr. Karnan said the repair works are already underway on roads damaged by heavy rains, and any pending works on National Highways used for idol processions will also be completed in time. He called upon the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi and officials of all concerned government departments to extend their full cooperation to ensure the upcoming Ganesh festival is conducted smoothly and in a peaceful atmosphere across the city. The Ganesh festivities are scheduled to begin on August 27 this year, to conclude with idol immersions on September 6. Mr. Karnan stated that, as in previous years, GHMC, the police, and other government agencies will work in close coordination and assured that more cranes will be deployed at immersion sites to ensure quick and safe idol immersion. Zonal-level coordination meetings will also be conducted to ensure seamless execution of plans. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Vikram Singh Mann shared several safety guidelines, stressing the need for quality materials and wiring for pandals due to possible heavy rains, height restrictions for idols to avoid traffic disruptions, installation of at least one CCTV camera per pandal, and dedicated volunteer teams at large pandals. He also recommended separate entry and exit routes for visitors at major pandals and timely commencement of key processions, including that of Khairatabad and Balapur, to facilitate smooth immersions. Members of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi also presented suggestions to officials for the smooth conduct of the festival.

Thane tribunal awards Rs 4.17 lakh compensation to woman maimed in public transport accident case
THANE: The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Thane awarded a compensation of ₹4.17 lakh to a 62-year-old woman who was seriously injured after falling under a moving Mira Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMC) bus in 2018. The order was passed by Tribunal Member R.V. Mohite recently. The incident occurred on 5 February 2018, when the woman was attempting to board a bus at a stop in the Mira Road area. The driver, without confirming if all passengers were safely boarded, allegedly started the vehicle abruptly. As a result, the woman fell, and the rear wheel of the bus ran over her left leg, causing significant injuries. She required immediate medical attention and underwent surgery, including skin grafting and further treatment due to complications. A police complaint was filed, and charges under various sections 279, 337, and 338 of the IPC were registered against the driver. The woman, a housewife at the time of the accident, claimed that the incident led to lasting physical and financial difficulties. She sought compensation under Section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The transport authority and its insurer contested the claim, denying negligence and questioning the extent of the injuries. While a disability of 33% was initially assessed, the tribunal considered a functional disability of 10% in determining compensation. The award covers medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of income, cost of assistance during recovery, and other incidental costs. The tribunal also directed The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Thane, directed the Transport Manager, MBMT and the Directorate of Insurance, Maharashtra State to jointly and severally pay ₹4,17,890/- with 9% interest per annum to the claimant.
