The Adani Group has inaugurated India's first off-grid 5-megawatt green hydrogen pilot plant in Kutch, Gujarat, the company announced on Monday.
An off-grid green hydrogen plant generates hydrogen through electrolysis powered entirely by renewable energy sources like solar or wind, without relying on the main electrical grid. This ensures the hydrogen production process is fully supported by its self-sustained renewable energy.
The 5 MW plant has been built by Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL) – the clean energy unit under the group's flagship firm Adani Enterprises Ltd.
Calling it a key milestone towards enabling India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, the group said the successful commissioning demonstrates technical feasibility and sets a benchmark for off-grid, renewable-powered industrial applications of green hydrogen and its derivatives in emissions-intensive sectors.
'The state-of-the-art plant is 100 per cent green-powered by solar energy and integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enabling it to operate completely off-grid. This represents a new paradigm in decentralised, renewable-powered hydrogen production,' the statement said.
Hydrogen is colour-coded based on how it's produced and the associated environmental impact. When produced from fossil fuels, it is grey. Green hydrogen is produced when electricity produced from renewable sources such as solar or wind power is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. What Is ANIL?
ANIL is developing large-scale production facilities for green hydrogen and its derivatives through an integrated end-to-end ecosystem. This includes producing green hydrogen and its derivative products, such as green ammonia, green methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, and manufacturing solar cells, ingots & wafers, solar modules, wind turbine generators, and electrolysers at Mundra, Gujarat, to meet the demand across diverse sectors in both domestic and international markets.
The ANIL pilot plant is India's first off-grid 5 MW green hydrogen facility featuring a fully automated, closed-loop electrolyser system designed to respond dynamically to real-time renewable energy inputs. This provides valuable operational flexibility, particularly in addressing the variability of solar power, while ensuring efficiency, safety and performance.
'This breakthrough reinforces the Adani Group's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and leadership in the emerging green hydrogen economy. It supports India's ambition to become a global hub for green hydrogen production and sets a benchmark for renewable-powered industrial applications across hard-to-abate sectors,' the statement said. The pilot also serves as a proof of concept ahead of ANIL's upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Mundra, Gujarat – a key project that will contribute significantly to India's low-carbon future. Green hydrogen is expected to play a vital role in decarbonising sectors such as fertilisers, refining and heavy transport – and in achieving global net-zero targets.
The initiative is aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), a flagship Government of India programme that aims to reduce import dependence, enhance energy self-sufficiency and accelerate the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries – all in fulfilment of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Global PE firms, domestic giants circle Statkraft's India assets
Mumbai: Global private equity firm Blackstone and Gurugram-based Serentica Renewables are leading the race to acquire the solar assets of Norwegian energy firm Statkraft in India, while Adani Group and JSW Group are in the fray to acquire its hydro power plants, three people said. Serentica, which is backed by PE firm KKR, has also bid for Statkraft's wind assets in India. Statkraft's solar assets in the country are likely to be valued at ₹1,700-1,800 crore and the hydro assets at ₹1,400-1,500 crore, according to the people familiar with the developments. 'The binding bids have been submitted and the seller will proceed with one of the buyers for each category of assets," one of them said. EY Norway is advising Statkraft on the sale. Statkraft India has a total renewable energy portfolio of around 1 GW, including solar energy and hydropower assets. These include a 76 MW operational solar power plant and an additional 75 MW solar power capacity being developed in Tamil Nadu. A 445 MW solar power project in Rajasthan is nearing completion. Statkraft's hydropower assets in the country include a 49% stake in two operating hydropower assets in Himachal Pradesh at Allain Duhangan (192 MW) and Malana (86 MW). Another hydropower plant of 150 MW capacity is under construction in the state at Tidong. The fact that the hydropower assets are joint ventures with LNJ Bhilwara group complicates the deal for potential suitors. A spokesperson for Blackstone declined comment. In an emailed response, a spokesperson for Serentica said, 'We explore opportunities for acquisitions and partnerships on an ongoing basis. We were among the selected bidders for the Statkraft portfolio in April, post which we conducted our diligence. We have submitted our binding offers for Statkraft's wind and solar portfolio". Statkraft, EY, Adani Group, and JSW Group did not reply to emailed queries. Statkraft's India journey The Norwegian group's decision to sell its India assets comes after a steady slide in overall revenue for the group and mounting debt. Statkraft plans to instead focus on other high-potential markets in the Nordics, Europe, and South America to meet its growth targets. Statkraft is the largest renewable energy producer in Europe with an installed capacity of 19.4 GW, of which 12.1 GW is hydropower capacity in Norway. The Norwegian state-owned firm entered the Indian power market through its subsidiary SN Power in 2004, when it acquired 49% of the shares in Malana Power Co. Ltd. Statkraft was the first foreign investor in India's hydropower sector.

India eyes 10 pc of global green hydrogen exports by 2030: Shripad Yesso Naik
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) India is aiming to become a global hub for green hydrogen exports, eyeing nearly 10 per cent of the worldwide demand by 2030, Union Minister Shripad Yesso Naik said on Tuesday. Addressing FICCI Green Hydrogen Summit 2025, the minister said 8.62 lakh tonne annual hydrogen production capacity has been awarded to 19 companies. He noted that 5 states have already notified their green hydrogen policies, and several others are actively working in this direction. These states are facilitating land allocation, ensuring water availability, promoting banking of renewable power, and incentivizing innovation, particularly through the development of hydrogen hubs. The Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy mentioned that over 100 green hydrogen standards and protocols have been adopted or are under development to ensure quality and safety. 'We want to make India not only a major producer but also a global hub for green hydrogen exports, aiming to capture nearly 10 per cent of the global demand," he said. Many firms are also forging global partnerships to ensure cost competitiveness and to position India as a reliable exporter in a global market expected to exceed 100 million metric tonne by 2030. Hinting at providing incentives and finance facility to achieve the target, he stated,"This will require us to continue innovating, to strengthen certification and trading mechanisms, to create offtake certainty, and to unlock green finance through instruments such as viability gap funding, green bonds, and multilateral bank support." The government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023 with an initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore. The minister noted that grid integration, storage solutions, land availability, and cost competitiveness remain critical areas of focus. But these challenges are solvable. With technological advances in solar PV, offshore wind, and electrolyser efficiency, the cost of green hydrogen is already coming down and will continue to do so, he stated. Under SIGHT scheme Component-I, which aims at Electrolyzer Manufacturing, 3,000 MW of manufacturing capacity has been awarded to 15 companies. Under SIGHT Component-II, which aims at green hydrogen production, 8,62,000 tonne per annum of production capacity has been awarded to 19 companies. 'We have launched pilot projects in critical sectors such as steel, transport, and shipping, exploring the direct use of green hydrogen," Naik said. A total of 23 projects have been sanctioned under the Research and Development (R&D) component, with another 100+ proposals under evaluation for establishing Centres of Excellence. 'We are also setting up green hydrogen testing facilities within India, with 3 projects already awarded in this regard," he informed. In addition, to meet the National Green Hydrogen Mission's target of producing 5 million tonne of green hydrogen by 2030, the country aims to develop an additional 125 GW of renewable energy capacity dedicated specifically to green hydrogen production. Ewa Suwara, Chargé d' affaires, EU Delegation to India stated that the upcoming India–EU Hydrogen Task Force is a high-level platform to align strategies and coordinate actions. Discussions are ongoing on the terms of reference, and 'we hope to convene the first meeting soon," she informed. 'But let me emphasize — this is not just about governments talking to each other. The real success will come from businesses on both sides engaging directly, finding synergies, and building commercially viable partnerships. That is precisely the purpose of this summit," she said. Reliance Infrastructure bags NHPC's Rs 4,000-crore solar-battery project
Reliance Infrastructure has received a letter of award (LoA) for a 390 megawatt (Mw) solar power project and 780 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) from NHPC, the company said. The project is valued at Rs 4,000 crore, according to the industry estimates. Once commissioned, the platform will add 700 megawatt-peak (MWp) of solar DC capacity and 780 MWh of BESS capacity to Reliance Group's portfolio. The winning tariff was discovered at Rs 3.13/kilowatt-hour (kWh). The project is a part of a broader 1,200 MW solar along with 600 MW/2,400 MWh BESS inter-state transmission system (ISTS)-connected tender floated by NHPC, which saw participation from 15 entities, with 14 qualifying for the e-reverse auction. The tender was oversubscribed by nearly four times. With this addition, the combined Reliance Group's clean energy pipeline now stands at over 3 GWp of solar DC capacity and over 3.5 GWhr of BESS capacity, making it India's largest player in the integrated solar and BESS segment, Reliance Infrastructure said. This successful bid underscores Reliance Group's continued progress and commitment to becoming a leading player in India's renewable energy sector. It marks a significant milestone in the Group's strategic vision to transition toward cleaner energy sources and play a pivotal role in shaping the country's sustainable energy future, the company said. Earlier this month, the company won an arbitration award of Rs 526.23 crore along with interest against Aravali Power Company Private Limited (APCPL) in relation to an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract. On August 8, the company announced that its joint venture subsidiaries BSES Yamuna Power and BSES Rajdhani Power will recover regulatory assets worth Rs 28,483 crore over the next four years.
