'Line of Duty was on my mind when creating Netflix's latest thriller'
Netflix has a new mystery waiting to unfurl on your screens today, which will be perfect for those hankering after a slice of Line of Duty.
Scott Frank, the writer and director behind Netflix's runaway chess hit The Queen's Gambit (an unlikely combination of words), is back on the streamer with the twisty crime thriller Dept Q.
The new nine-part show dives in at the deep end with a shooting in the first scene that leaves one copper dead, our protagonist detective Carl Morck (Matthew Goode) traumatised and his partner paralysed.
Speaking to Metro, Frank explained how certain British TV thrillers played a huge part in his inspiration for the show, which has dropped all nine of its episodes to binge in one go today.
Following the events of the opening scene, Morck is still adjusting to his new normal months later, when his superior exiles him to a newly established department – the name's in the title – down in the basement.

He's joined by a couple of fellow police misfits and tasked with cracking a long-unsolved cold case.

Based on a series of Scandi-noir novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, the show's creator Frank, 65, said he'd been sitting on the book rights and waiting to make the show for 15 years.
It was his love of crime dramas, 'especially' the British variety, that he said finally got him doing something outside his wheelhouse with this show.
He told Metro: 'I just love these kinds of shows myself anyway. They're my guilty pleasure, not even guilty, my pleasure to watch.
'I hadn't really made anything like this before, and so it seemed like a really, really fun idea.'
When asked which crime dramas he had in mind when making the show, Frank had a laundry list: Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Prime Suspect, Cracker, as well as Line of Duty.
'I love Line of Duty, just because of the way it moves and the way it keeps turning,' Frank said.
'You have these 20-minute interrogation scenes that are like plays. I just love that.'
Frank hopes that viewers tuning in to Dept Q take away 'a full meal' from the show. He said: 'I hope they have a good time and they get lost in it the way I like to get lost in these shows where you're pulled along and second guessing, but the character reveals are so satisfying.'
He only has one small plea to TV viewers: don't watch the show on your phone.
'I don't know how they do it,' he said. 'I feel terrible for the filmmakers, because they're watching Outlander on their cell phone.
'Even my own wife sometimes will be watching, and she'll look down to do something, and then she'll look up and she'll have missed a key plot point.
'I don't know how to control that. I only know how to write a good story and then just hope that enough people realise that it's one they should probably lean in for.'
And if he does happen to see you watching Dept Q on the tube? 'I would be both mortified and resigned at the same time,' he laughs.
Matthew Goode, 47, told Metro he didn't think Frank would choose him for the role of Morck, but Frank said he wrote the scripts with Goode specifically in mind. More Trending
Goode said: 'I was thinking he can pretty have whoever he wants. Why question him? He's one of the most intelligent men around. So he came back and he said, 'I think I'd really like you to do it'.
'It's just such brilliant, nuanced characters. It's dark, it's hilarious. And that's something you don't necessarily always see within this genre. I just wanted more scripts. I wanted to know where it was going.
'So I felt very, very, very lucky and delighted, because it's the second time that Scott has given me a role that I don't think many other directors would necessarily have thought of me for.'

Dept. Q star Chloe Pirrie says filming in her hometown let her reconnect with family
Her career to date has seen her travel the world, including a stint filming in Canada alongside Hollywood stars Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones. But Scots actress Chloe Pirrie, 37, insists she was more excited by the opportunity of shooting in her home town of Edinburgh for six months as it allowed her to reconnect with family. A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, she is currently starring as prosecutor Merritt Lingard in Netflix crime drama Department Q. Discussing what it meant to be back in the city of her youth, Pirrie, who is known for her roles in The Queen's Gambit and The Crown, said: 'I've got family there that I hadn't seen for a while so it was great to be able to spend time with them. 'A family member came to set – I've never had that before. That kind of stuff is really special.' The actress also told how she and her Scottish co-stars proved themselves expert at delivering the expletives written in the script. She joked: 'We're just good at it. It's like a national sport.' Pirrie's co-stars on the new show include Downton Abbey's Matthew Goode, Harry Potter and Bridget Jones star Shirley Henderson, Trainspotting alumni Kelly Macdonald and Game of Thrones actress Kate Dickie. However, despite spending six months in Edinburgh, Pirrie revealed she didn't have time to let her hair down with them. Speaking on the red carpet at the show's premiere in London, she said: 'I didn't get to socialise with people as much as I probably would have liked because my schedule was so different to everyone else.' Based on a series of books by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen, the series follows Goode's character DCI Carl Morck, who sets up a cold case unit while struggling with guilt over an incident that left a young police officer dead and another paralysed. As Goode's character brings his team together he is reluctantly paired with rookie assistant Akram Salim, played by Swedish actor Alexej Manvelov. And while Pirrie might have struggled to socialise, the same can't be said for Goode and Manvelov. In an interview to promote the show, Goode revealed that he and Manvelov hung out together as most of the home-grown cast decided not to stay in Edinburgh. He said: 'Most of the actors lived in Glasgow. It was only me and Alexej in Edinburgh.' Explaining how the pair bonded, he said he invited Manvelov to meet him at a French restaurant on their second day in the city. He added: 'We had lunch and were still there five hours later sort of six bottles of red wine down. If you become friends off-screen then it really helps on screen.'

7 best shows to binge if you're already missing Doctor Who after finale
The second season of Doctor Who's run with Ncuti Gatwa came to an end this Saturday, capping off a batch of episodes that introduced a new companion and forever changed the show's lore. It was a lot of take in, as we travelled along through eight episodes trying to return Belinda (Varada Sethu) to her home planet. So if, like us, you're reeling from the two-part finale in the Tardis, we have some palate cleanser TV shows you can turn to while we wait for news of what is next in the Whoniverse. We don't yet know when – or even (gulp) if – the beloved BBC show will be back on air. So what better time to get stuck into something similar? We've compiled a list of shows to turn to in your time of need, some of which even feature characters Whovians will already know. From Doctor Who spin-offs to shows that are just a bit timey-wimey, here are seven options to fill that Tardis-shaped hole in your life. This a Doctor Who spin-off for the younger ones in the house, starring one of the most beloved companions to ever travel across the universe at the Doctor's side. Sarah Jane Smith, played by the late great Elisabeth Sladen, joined the Third and Fourth Doctors in the 70s. This might have first aired on CBBC, but it has everything an adult Whovian can enjoy – including guest appearances from David Tennant and Matt Smith. This answers the question of what becomes of those the Doctor has crossed paths with and teases the possibility that there's always a Slitheen or the Judoon just around the corner, even on a humdrum suburban street. The Sarah Jane Adventures is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Another hit Doctor Who spin-off, but Torchwood is definitely not for kids. This is Doctor Who with a dark, sexy and violent rebrand – in this instance, you might have to tune in to get a sense of what we mean. The BBC miniseries stars the Ninth Doctor's companion Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and his team at the covert Torchwood Institute, which is much like UNIT in today's Who, and lends a hand to fend aliens off from humanity when the Doctor is otherwise indisposed. That is, when they're not dealing with heaps of personal drama at the institute. The third season Torchwood: Children of Earth is a must-see for any tried and tested Whovian. Torchwood is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Over a decade since it first aired, Sherlock was pure appointment viewing at the time. If you didn't tune it, how would you avoid being spoiled the following day? But if you somehow missed the moment and are in need of a brainbox-led show like Doctor Who, who's brainier than Sherlock Holmes? Benedict Cumberbatch stars as the aloof, scarf-toting genius and has Martin Freeman as Watson, forever side-eyeing next to him. The cast popping up along the way is exceptional and the writing superb. Just try not to feel too inferior to Holmes when you fail to crack the case. Sherlock is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Have you ever watched a Jurassic Park film and thought, I wish I could hang out with these dinosaurs more? Enter Primeval. Truly a hidden gem, this sci-fi show from ITV sees a professor and his prehistoric-obsessed team track down and capture dangerous dinosaurs as they manage to slip through a rip in time from the past. There are too many good episodes to pick from. When a vicious sabre-toothed dinosaur breaks into a Go Ape-type park? Loved it. When a huge water dino gets into London's plumbing? Yikes. When a pack of velociraptors break into a mall? Run, don't walk, to your TV screens now. Primeval is available to stream on Now. If you have yet to come across Misfits, you lucky thing – what a treat you have in store. The Channel 4 dark comedy finds a ragtag group of young offenders suddenly struck by mysterious cosmic lightning while doing community service, which leaves them each with a special superpower. The premise gets 10 points for originality. Except this lot aren't about world saving. They're out for themselves. A foul-mouth twist on the superhero genre, those who enjoy Torchwood will also likely feel at home with this. The Umbrella Academy's Robert Sheehan is a stand-out as the immortal Nathan. Misfits is available to stream on Channel 4. Netflix's time travelling murder mystery Bodies stars Stephen Graham, of recent Adolescent success on the streaming platform. Given that he's one of the best actors working at the moment, we can rest assured this is going to be at least a base level of good. Graham's detectives grapples with four killings in four different timelines, in an adaptation of the late Si Spencer's graphic novel from 2015. The show bends time and genres in an ambitious set of episodes that have certain teething pains, but definitely puts a new spin on the detective drama. One for those who love something timey-wimey. Bodies is available to stream on Netflix. When you're watching a Doctor Who episode with a brilliant concept that doesn't quite come together, you might be left thinking, what would this have looked like in Charlie Brooker's hands? Netflix's dark tech hit has some surprising genetic similarities to the BBC stalwart, given they're essentially telling anthology stories. When Black Mirror and Doctor Who both started to take fantastical turns in recent seasons, the mystery-of-the-week similarities became even clearer. Which begs the question, Black Mirror x Doctor Who episode when? From the most recent seventh season of episodes on Streamberry – sorry, Netflix – start with 'Common People' if you want to be glum in an existential way, then end with 'Eulogy' if you want to be glum in a moving way. Black Mirror is available to stream on Netflix. A bit of a curveball to end the list, but this is one for the Ncuti Gatwa converts. More Trending There are some fans who perhaps didn't know much about the Scottish actor before he stepped into the Tardis, but it was on Sex Education where he first made a name for himself. Watching his fabulous character Eric in the sex positive teen drama on Netflix makes it clear why Gatwa was cast as the Doctor. He's at turns funny, moving and an eternal scene-stealer. Passengers cheer while ‘drunk' mum and daughter Tiktok stars forced off plane

The mum and daughter, who ran the account @angel777987, were filmed causing chaos on the aircraft which took off from Manchester on May 28. After a two hour delay, the pair began drinking and quickly began shouting and swearing at staff – with the content creator daughter demanding to get off mid air. Fellow passenger Mandy, who captured the footage on @balloonsbykandykrush, said the pair were asked to calm down throughout the flight. But the daughter refused to sit in her seat in row 22, and staff were forced to strap her down. Mandy told MailOnline: 'The airline made her sit back down again and the captain announced that due to reckless behaviour there will be a delay in Jamaica as she will be arrested. 'They then put Angel to the back of the rows, strapped her in the seat. They cuffed her and then the famous TikTok woman, Angel, I believe, got arrested.' The flight landed in Jamaica six hours later than the original time after the crew was forced to make an emergency landing in Canada due to the mum and daughter's behaviour. They were arrested once the plane landed, with footage showing passengers cheering as the pair are lead away from their seats by police. The mum begins shouting in the face of one of the officers while Angel can be seen smiling and telling passengers 'bye'. More Trending Angel's Tiktok account has since been closed. Before the argument broke out, a video uploaded to the account shows Angel drinking with her mum at the airport.
