BJP leader gets bail in officer assault case

Bhubaneswar: The BJP leader, Jagannath Pradhan, who was arrested in a case involving the physical assault on a senior Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer in Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) office, was released from jail after getting bail from a local court here on Wednesday. Pradhan was released from Jharpada jail here on Wednesday evening. The BJP leader was welcomed by his supporters when he walked out of the jail. The BJP leader and Bhubaneswar (Ekamra) MLA Babu Singh also welcomed him. Then, his supporters took Pradhan to his office in a procession by bursting firecrackers and beating drums. Speaking to mediapersons, Pradhan condemned the incident (assault on OAS officer) and claimed that he was neither directly nor indirectly involved in the assault on the officer, which was 'proved today by the court.' The OAS Association became the victim of a conspiracy of Opposition BJD, which led to his arrest, he claimed. 'The OAS Association should introspect how they fell into the conspiracy. It is the duty of every officer to ensure smooth functioning of the Mohan Majhi government in the State,' he said. Earlier in the day, the District and Sessions Court, Khurda, granted bail to Pradhan on a security of Rs 30,000. The court had asked the government counsel to produce the telephonic conversation between Pradhan and Ratnakar Sahoo, the victim OAS officer. The court granted bail to Pradhan after the government counsel 'failed' to produce evidence of a conversation in the court, said advocate Suresh Kumar Sahoo. The BMC Additional Commissioner, Ratnakar Sahoo, was brutally attacked, dragged on the floor of the office, kicked in the face and humiliated by a group of people, allegedly supporters of Pradhan. The viral video of the officer's assault created a Statewide outrage forcing OAS officers to go on strike demanding the arrest of all the accused persons, including Pradhan, who is accused of masterminding the attack on Sahoo. On Thursday night, Pradhan surrendered before the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar, and was arrested and sent to jail. He was produced before the SDJM (Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate's) Court in Bhubaneswar which rejected his bail petition and sent him to 14-day judicial custody. Pradhan was booked under various sections of BNS which deals with offences like assault on public servants, obstructing government work and causing grievous injury. The BJP leader surrendered before the police as the members of the OAS Association went on a cease-work agitation across the State. Earlier, police had arrested five persons in connection with the case. While Pradhan was granted bail on Wednesday, the hearing of the bail petition of the other five accused is scheduled to be held on July 15, the advocate said.

2 labourers die during maintenance work at Paschim Vihar hospital, families protest

New Delhi: Two labourers died while working on a carbon filter system at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute in west Delhi's Paschim Vihar on Tuesday. The deceased, identified as Birjesh (26) and Vikram (30), both originally from Uttar Pradesh, were declared brought dead bythe attending doctor at the hospital. According to police officials, the maintenance work was carried out by a contractor under an annual maintenance contract (AMC). Preliminary investigation suggests the two labourers fell unconscious while working on the maintenance task, prompting hospital authorities to alert police. Acting promptly, the SHO of Paschim Vihar East police station, along with staff, reached the hospital and initiated a probe. A crime team and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team were deployed to collect evidence from the spot, conduct a thorough inspection and document the scene, including scene photography. Police registered a case under relevant sections of BNS and are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. They are also examining the safety measures in place during maintenance work and the role of the contractor. The investigation is ongoing, police said, adding that the outcome will be crucial in determining the next course of action. Following the incident, the family members and friends of the duo protested and demanded accountability. Narender Kumar, a relative of Brijesh, said, "Five people were working there when they were told to go inside to level the chemical. Brijesh was the first to step onto the carbon filter system, but he fell unconscious. Vikram went in to save him, but he also got trapped." Another relative, also named Narender, said, "At the time of the incident, Vikram called his acquaintance Naresh, who was working on the upper floors of the building. He informed Naresh that Brijesh had gone inside and died. However, by the time Naresh came downstairs, Vikram also went in, and tragically, he too died." Co-workers and relatives claimed that Brijesh and Vikram had no experience working with carbon filter systems and were not provided with any safety gear. Initially, they refused to go inside but were ultimately compelled to do so, they alleged. Police said they are investigating the claims. Authorities will question the personnel concerned to determine who gave the order to send the two men inside and seek the necessary documents. In a statement, the hospital said, "Around 6.45pm on Monday, an unfortunate accident took place at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute wherein workers of 'Friend's Enviro Engineers', who are responsible for the operation and maintenance of the sewage treatment plant (STP), were carrying out the servicing of the activated carbon filter. Workers of Friends Enviro Engineers, namely Brijesh and Vikram, met with an accident while carrying out their regular work of servicing the activated carbon filter. " "The staff of Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute rescued them at the earliest and they were given the best possible treatment at the emergency of the hospital. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, they couldn't be saved. The hospital informed police at the earliest and is fully cooperating in their proceedings."

'No Societal Harm': Allahabad HC Grants Anticipatory Bail In Case Over Anti-Govt Post After Pahalgam Attack

Last Updated: The post urged people to ignore claims that the attackers asked for victims' names before firing and instead called for accountability regarding the security failure The Allahabad High Court has granted anticipatory bail to a man accused of sharing a social media post critical of government actions in the aftermath of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. The court observed that the prosecution had failed to demonstrate that the alleged offence had an impact on society at large or that it could cause any harm. The bail application was filed by Azaz Ahmad, who had been booked under Sections 353(3) and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Izzatnagar Police Station, Bareilly. According to the prosecution, Ahmad had posted objectionable remarks against the government on social media during the period of national mourning following the attack. As per the FIR, sub-inspector Mukesh Chauhan reported that while he was in the Munshinagar area, he witnessed a candlelight vigil being held by residents in honour of the victims. Around the same time, a post questioning the government's narrative began circulating widely on social media. The message urged people to shift focus away from claims that the attackers asked for victims' names before firing and instead called for accountability regarding the security failure that allowed the attack to occur. The police claimed that the timing and tone of the post aggravated communal tensions and disrupted public harmony during a sensitive period. The post bore Ahmad's name and identified him as the district president of the Mulayam Singh Youth Brigade, further amplifying its reach and visibility. However, pleading for pre-arrest bail, Ahmad's counsel argued that the offence under Section 353 of the BNS, which carries a sentence of less than seven years, may be applicable at best, and that the more serious charge under Section 152 BNS was not justified. He submitted that criticising the government by itself cannot be treated as against the country. The bench of Justice Vikram D Chauhan, while hearing the application, noted that the prosecution had not provided any material suggesting that Ahmad's social media activity had caused societal harm or could obstruct justice. The court further observed that no concerns had been raised by the prosecution regarding Ahmad tampering with evidence, influencing witnesses, or evading the investigation. While Ahmad's criminal antecedents were pointed out, the court relied on Supreme Court precedents to assert that such history alone cannot be grounds to deny bail unless exceptional circumstances are demonstrated. Citing the judgments of Ash Mohammad v Shiv Raj Singh and Prabhakar Tewari v State of UP, the bench reiterated that the presence of prior criminal cases does not automatically disqualify an individual from receiving bail. Granting relief, the court directed that Ahmad be released on anticipatory bail in the event of arrest, subject to furnishing a personal bond of Rs 25,000 along with two sureties of like amount. Conditions, including regular cooperation with the investigation, non-interference with evidence or witnesses, and a prohibition on leaving the country without court permission, were also imposed. The court concluded by warning that any violation of the set conditions may lead to cancellation of the bail protection. view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 04:39 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
