More than 200 artists gather at renovated Venkatappa Art Gallery in Bengaluru
The artists who congregated at the renovated gallery marked the event by cutting ribbons and exploring the new additions there. 'After a struggle of 10 years, we can now proudly say Bengaluru has a superb art gallery,' said Pa.Sa. Kumar, Karnataka Lalithakala Academy president.
Left out from the list
The artists had boycotted the formal inauguration by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Tourism Minister H.K. Patil, after the invitation from the gallery and the government failed to mention artists from the State. Those who stayed away from the formal event included senior artists like S.G. Vasudev.
'We have been raising voices for the renovation of the gallery for the last 10 years. Core committee members were consulted at every stage of the work, but for the inauguration, we were left out. Not even senior artists or Academy heads were invited,' said Sheela Gowda, core committee member of the Venkatappa Art Gallery forum.
Senior artist Krishna Setty remarked that the 'gallery pravesha' was a symbol of solidarity amongst the artist community.
'As per protocol, 55 names were there in the initial invitation. Not a single artist was mentioned in that list. Only when we made a hue and cry did they add the names of a few artists. But we had already made a decision. Only very few artists took part in the formal inauguration, whereas more than 200 artists are here today.'
Importance of public spaces
Several artists expressed happiness that the original building and the character of the place were retained during the restoration work. Sandeep J., principal architect at Architecture Paradigm, which worked on the restoration, was felicitated during the event.
Talking about the work, he noted that restoring the gallery was a challenge given its legacy and the number of stakeholders involved.
'For me, what was of utmost importance was the fact that this is a public space. We had to restore it and give it back to the city. While you are talking about the development of the city, you also need to take into account the quality of life. Spaces like these are important for that, and not just the infrastructure,' he said.

BBMP pins hopes on climate clubs despite slow start
The Bengaluru Climate Action Clubs (BCAC) initiative, launched by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), began with a flyer campaign that saw the registration of over 700 educational institutions. However, the programme has struggled to sustain the interest of these institutions. Launched on June 6 by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to mark World Environment Day, the initiative is aimed at establishing climate action clubs in schools and colleges across the city, engaging students in sustainability efforts. Its primary focus is to instill environmental responsibility among children through activities and challenges related to climate issues. As of Tuesday, 754 clubs have been formed across educational institutions, but only 117 are actively functioning, according to BCAC data. This is an improvement from the first week of July, when only 70 clubs were active. Of those, representatives from 50 clubs participated in a meeting held on July 2. Suraj S.K., a local climate action and civic engagement fellow working on the project, remains optimistic that participation will grow as the initiative expands to more institutions. Several activities are planned to strengthen the clubs and support their effective implementation. Seven sectors The BCAC operates under seven broad sectors outlined in the Bengaluru Climate Action Plan (BCAP), with each sector focusing on a different aspect of the climate crisis. These include waste management, energy, green planning, transportation, air quality, water, and disaster management. Within these categories, clubs are expected to identify specific problems and devise action plans to tackle them. For example, under the energy category, a club might set a goal to reduce electricity bills by identifying areas of excessive power use and creating a plan to curb wasteful energy consumption. Implementing such plans would directly address climate-related challenges. According to Mr. Suraj, similarly, each category offers various opportunities to identify issues and formulate solutions, which is the core idea behind BCAC. 'When we look at it individually, the reduction in a school's power consumption may seem marginal. But if thousands of schools implement the same measures, the overall energy savings could be significant,' Mr. Suraj explained. For now, the clubs have been asked to focus on just four sectors: energy, water, greening, and waste management. 'Greening' involves using unused land within school campuses to plant saplings and increase green cover. BBMP officials believe the programme will gain momentum once active clubs begin implementing their action plans and contributing to change. While participation is entirely voluntary, the BCAC plans to encourage involvement by recognising and awarding clubs that successfully implement their initiatives. Institutions such as MES Prof. B.R. Subba Rao College, Cambridge School, and BGS PU College currently have active climate action clubs.

CIT receives BluGreen award for zero waste campus
The Cambridge Institute of Technology (CIT) has recently received the BluGreen Award 2025 under the Solid Waste Management category, presented by the BBMP and the Bengaluru Climate Action Cell. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar handed over the award. CIT was among 15 institutions selected from 53 entries in the Solid Waste Management category. The recognition comes after a series of waste management initiatives implemented on campus, resulting in its designation as a zero waste campus. In July 2024, then Bengaluru Police Commissioner, B. Dayananda, visited the CIT campus to review its waste management practices. Following this, the commissioner's office adopted similar measures and also achieved zero waste status, earning the same award. CIT began its waste reduction efforts in late 2019, following discussions with the NGO Vedan.

Watch: A tour of the renovated Venkatappa Art Gallery in Bengaluru
Located inside the beautiful Cubbon park, the Venkatappa Art Gallery holds a special place in the history of Bengaluru. The Government of Karnataka inaugurated the iconic art gallery in 1975. It was dedicated to the great artist Shri K. Venkatappa. He was a pioneer in painting, Plaster of Paris works and an exponent of Veena. In January 17, 2024 the Brigade Foundation of the Brigade Group started the restoration work of the gallery. It included repairing the museum's infrastructure, including civil repairs, public amenities, and enhancing gallery displays. The external landscaping was also improved. The Galleries now showcase works of artists K. Venkatappa and K.K. Hebbar, alongside five mini galleries featuring rotating exhibitions. The renovated facility also features a restoration room which provides conservators with tools to maintain and restore artworks. The building now has a cafe space too. The renovated art gallery will now be officially transferred to government authorities for maintenance.
