PM to officiate Kaamatan Festival

KOTA KINABALU (May 19): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to attend the 2025 Sabah State-Level Kaamatan Festival Celebration on May 30.
Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan, who is also the chairman of the 2025 State-Level Kaamatan Festival Celebration Main Committee, stated that Anwar will officiate the festival on that day.
'Meanwhile, the official closing ceremony of the state-level Kaamatan Festival will be presided over by the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, on May 31.
'The purpose of our visit to Tun Musa was to brief him on the closing ceremony of Kaamatan, as well as the activities and programs scheduled for that day,' he told the media after meeting Tun Musa at Istana Seri Kinabalu today.
According to Jeffrey, the main events include cultural performances, visits to traditional houses at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Centre, and the Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen) competition in the afternoon.
This year's Kaamatan theme, 'Kaamatan For All', reflects hopes for a smooth and vibrant celebration with the participation of local and international visitors.
He added that the festival will also welcome foreign visitors, including those from Kalimantan, as well as ambassadors and investors.
'Kaamatan is an important platform to boost Sabah's economy. That's why the government has allocated significant funds to support various activities not only in Sabah but also in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
'The Kaamatan celebration has now become a national-level festival, greatly impacting the economy and tourism sectors,' he explained.
He also noted that the festival benefits small-scale rural entrepreneurs and promotes local products on a broader scale.
'I believe the impact of Kaamatan extends beyond domestic borders — it's national and even international,' he added.
Also present were Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Datuk Peto Galim and the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Leonard Stephen Poyong.

Implement federal-funded projects in Sabah according to schedule - Ewon

KOTA BELUD (June 3): Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick stated that all development projects in Sabah funded by the Federal Government must be carried out according to the schedule set. Ewon, who also serves as co-chairman of the Federal-State Sabah Development Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee together with Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, said the committee is tasked with ensuring that all projects in the pre-implementation category can be initiated. 'Datuk Shahelmey and I are responsible for monitoring and proposing solutions to any issues causing delays in the commencement of these projects. 'Once the projects are handed over to the implementing agencies and contractors, monitoring will continue through other platforms such as the Development Action Meeting,' he said after officiating the Kaamatan Festival celebration and the opening of the Kampung Podos open hall here yesterday. Ewon was commenting on the latest developments in the meeting of the Federal-State Sabah Development Programme and Project Monitoring Coordination Intervention Committee. He said the implementation of the Special Intervention Meetings, initiated earlier this year, had shown positive results. 'Many technical and administrative issues have been resolved more quickly through direct engagement between implementing agencies, ministries, and the State Government,' he said. Based on the report presented at the Sabah Federal-State Development Project Monitoring Coordination Meeting last May, the number of projects in pre-implementation status has been reduced from 207 projects to 137 projects. Ewon described this decrease as a positive development resulting from the cooperation of various parties. 'We have proposed several measures to technical departments and the ministries responsible for the projects so that any outstanding issues can be discussed and resolved. 'I hope the percentage of projects that have commenced will continue to rise in the upcoming meetings,' he said. He also expressed his appreciation to all ministries, the Sabah Government and technical departments that have succeeded in expediting procurement processes, contractor appointments, and tenders for projects that had not yet begun. 'I am satisfied with the cooperation shown by all those involved in this intervention committee,' he said.

AirAsia to train Sabah youth as pilots, engineers

Group CEO of AirAsia, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, said this initiative is part of efforts to develop local human capital, particularly among B40 youth. 'While tourism remains Sabah's key economic driver, AirAsia wants to expand its contribution by developing local talent and workforce skills. 'We already have many cabin crew members, engineers and pilots. Now, we want to help produce more pilots, engineers and technical personnel among Sabah's youth,' he said after paying a courtesy visit to the Governor of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, on Tuesday. Tony stated that the company is ready in terms of syllabus and program structure and will establish a working committee to outline the program's implementation. 'Once sufficient funding is secured, we will open applications. Our target is to start the program before the end of the year, beginning with pilot training,' he said. He explained that the program will later expand to engineering and other technical fields, including artificial intelligence (AI), in line with the company's ongoing investments in cutting-edge technology. 'In the aviation industry, AirAsia now extensively uses AI for network scheduling, fuel savings, and baggage management. Therefore, we want Sabah's youth to be involved in this technological advancement,' he added. Meanwhile, AirAsia reaffirms its commitment to strengthen the connectivity from its second-largest hub, Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, with the launch of a brand new fifth-freedom route to Fukuoka, Japan via Taipei. Starting from 15 August 2025, AirAsia will be operating the additional route connecting Kota Kinabalu to Fukuoka through a short stopover in Taipei with daily flights. Two Ranau villages to be excised from reserve

RANAU: The State Government has agreed to remove two villages here, namely Kg Ponulangon and Kg Walou, from the Forest Reserve area. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, said the matter was decided following several meetings with the Director of Forestry and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Hj Noor. 'I am pleased to announce that, in principle, the Chief Minister has given approval. 'This means that the villagers can apply for land ownership and the land can be cultivated for farming, building houses and so on, without interference from the Forest Department. 'However, this approval will be brought to the State Assembly for ratification,' said the Paginatan Assemblyman. He added that in this regard, the Forest Department will go down to the field to identify how much land will be removed from the Forest Reserve 'As the Wakil Rakyat, I will continue to strive to realise the aspirations of the villagers just like our efforts to realise the construction of a road from Kg Walou, Kg Ponulangon to Kg Tinanom. 'On the needs of the Mini Dewan in Kg Ponulangon, we submitted an application for the construction of a Mini Dewan to the District Office last year,' he said. 'I will instruct UPPM to refer back to the application. Hopefully we will be able to solve this matter this year too.' Abidin said this while officiating the Kg Ponulangon-level Kaamatan Festival held at the Balai Raya Kg Ponulangon, recently. He commended the leaders and residents of Kg Ponulangon for organising the village-level Kaamatan Festival. 'The theme 'Kaamatan for All' is significant because now Kaamatan is celebrated by all levels of society regardless of race or religious differences. 'For the KDMR community, Kaamatan is celebrated because we are grateful for the good harvest. All of this is a gift from God,' he said. According to him, the Kaamatan Festival is held every year because it is a local culture that must be preserved for future generations. Apart from that, he said, Kaamatan can unite the people. Meanwhile, Abidin said the government has revived the Sabah Padi and Rice Board with the aim of increasing local paddy production to reduce dependence on imported rice which is still at 72pc. He called on the residents of Kg Ponulangon to continue to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming PRN17 for the continuation of the GRS government's development programme through the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan. 'For our part, we will continue to serve the people because there are still many unfinished business. 'We are confident in the strong support of the residents of Kg Ponulangon,' he said.
