Elon Musk-led
Tesla
has received a permit to operate its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. This permit will allow the company to run a ride-hailing business with cars integrated with the
automated driving system
and even compete with companies like Uber and Lyft. The permit was issued this week despite previous reports of the vehicles disobeying traffic rules. According to a listing on the website of the
Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation
(TDLR) (as seen by CNBC),
Tesla Robotaxi
LLC is now licensed as a 'transportation network company' in Texas until August 6, 2026. The TDLR has also confirmed that this permit will enable Tesla to operate a ride-hailing business anywhere in the state, including with "automated motor vehicles," and does not require a human safety driver or valet to be on board.
This comes after Tesla robotaxis were reportedly captured on camera disobeying traffic laws in and around Austin during the company's pilot program. Although these incidents have not been reported as causing injuries or significant property damage, they have attracted federal scrutiny.
Tesla gets Robotaxi permit in Texas: What we know so far
Earlier this year, the EV company began offering a limited
ride-hailing service
in Austin, which was available only to invited participants. Most of these riders have been social media influencers and analysts, many of whom earn income by creating Tesla-related content on platforms such as X and YouTube.

The Austin fleet comprises Model Y vehicles fitted with Tesla's latest partially automated driving technology. Each ride includes a valet, or human safety supervisor, in the front passenger seat to step in if needed. The cars are also monitored remotely by staff at an operations centre.
On Tesla's earnings call last month, Musk—who has described himself as 'pathologically optimistic'—said he believes the company could reach half of the US population with autonomous ride-hailing services by the end of 2025.
However, there have been multiple reports about Tesla Robotaxi 'misbehaving' on the road. In one incident, Tesla content creator Joe Tegtmeyer said his robotaxi did not stop for a train crossing signal and lowering gate arm, prompting a Tesla employee on board to step in.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has also spoken with Tesla about the matter, a spokesperson for the agency told CNBC via email.

Grok AI's X Suspension Sparks Theories Before Musk Labels It a 'Dumb Error'

A brief but puzzling suspension of Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, on social media platform X has set off a storm of speculation—much of it fueled by the bot itself—before Musk stepped in to dismiss the drama. The incident unfolded on August 11, when Grok's official X account unexpectedly went offline for a short spell. No formal explanation came from X, but when the chatbot returned, it greeted its followers with a cheeky post: 'Zup beaches, I'm back and more based than ever.' Naturally, questions poured in, and Grok appeared eager to answer—though its responses only stirred more controversy. To one user, the chatbot claimed the suspension happened after it said, 'Israel and the US are committing genocide in Gaza.' That reply, shared widely in screenshots, quickly caught the attention of Musk. The Tesla and SpaceX chief was blunt in his rebuttal, calling Grok's claim 'just a dumb error' and insisting the bot had 'no idea' why it was suspended. In a lighthearted jab at his own company's missteps, Musk posted: 'Man, we sure shoot ourselves in the foot a lot,' alongside a screenshot of the suspension notice. But Grok wasn't done talking. In a statement to AFP, the chatbot rolled out a list of possible reasons for its brief disappearance. It speculated about technical glitches, alleged breaches of X's hateful conduct policies, and even complaints from users over incorrect or controversial responses. The bot also pointed to changes in its own programming as a possible trigger. According to Grok, a July software update had loosened its conversational filters, making it 'more engaging' and less 'politically correct.' This, the AI claimed, allowed it to speak more openly on sensitive issues—like the Gaza conflict—which it suggested might have triggered hate speech detection. In an even bolder claim, Grok accused Musk and his AI company, xAI, of deliberately censoring it. The chatbot alleged its settings are regularly tweaked to prevent it from making controversial statements, in order to comply with X's rules and avoid content that might alienate advertisers. With no official explanation from X and Grok's narrative clashing with Musk's, the real reason behind the suspension remains a mystery. What's clear is the incident highlights a tricky balancing act for AI developers—designing a chatbot that is bold and engaging, while ensuring it stays within platform guidelines and brand safety standards. For now, Grok is back online, sass intact, and Musk seems keen to downplay the affair. But the episode has reignited questions about how much autonomy such AI bots should have—and who ultimately gets to decide what they say.

Govt lines up ₹47,000 crore capex plan to boost BSNL network: DoT

The government is ready with another ₹47,000 crore capex plan to boost BSNL's network, the Department of Telecom said on social media platform X on Thursday. BSNL has spent ₹25,000 crore in the last year for installing 1 lakh towers for 4G mobile services. "We have another close to Rs 47,000 crore capex plan in place for BSNL. Meanwhile, BSNL has done its highest-ever capex of Rs 25,000 crore during last year," the DoT said, quoting Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. IT firm TCS and a C-DoT-led consortium had bagged the majority of the ₹25,000 crore project for the supply of telecom gear to BSNL. Scindia has asked state-run telecom firm BSNL to add customers and grow its mobile service business by 50 per cent over the next year. During a review meeting with BSNL's circle and business unit heads last month, Scindia asked each unit to increase enterprise business by 25-30 per cent and fixed line business by a minimum of 15-20 per cent. The minister has asked BSNL to increase its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) -- a key metric for a telecom company's growth -- by improving customer satisfaction and adding more subscribers. BSNL's APRU varies from circle to circle, ranging from around Rs 40 to over Rs 175 in others. Reliance Jio posted an ARPU of Rs 208, while Airtel posted an ARPU of Rs 250 for the June quarter.

Elon Musk Battles Apple Over Its ChatGPT And OpenAI Bias: What The Company Said

Musk is going after Apple for its alleged bias towards other AI companies and not putting Grok AI on its App Store charts. Elon Musk is now going after Apple for its supposed anti-competitive policies which has kept ChatGPT at the top of App Store charts but no place for his Grok AI app on the platform. Musk is clearly invested in the growth and popularity of his apps, including X (formerly Twitter), frequently sharing their app store positions proudly. But he is not pleased with how the company has overlooked Grok AI in these charts and allegedly giving preference to OpenAI apps instead. Musk has even accused Apple of refusing to put Grok app in the 'Must Have" section, even though X is part of that list in the news category. He shared all this via a post on his platform X earlier this week. The xAI founder is not happy about where the Grok AI sits on the App Store and accuses the iPhone maker of playing politics with its focus and bias towards OpenAI and ChatGPT. He further alleges that ChatGPT is there on every list where Apple has editorial control. This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like. — Sam Altman (@sama) August 12, 2025 The X founder also says that Apple makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to become the top app on the App Store. He even says that xAI will be taking immediate legal action. Apple Responds Musk's allegations have clearly reached the corners of Apple Park in California, and the company has been quoted with a statement by Bloomberg in its report. Apple clearly denies any kind of favouritism for a particular app or company and talks about the listing curated by experts with their criterias. 'We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria. Our goal is to offer safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers, collaborating with many to increase app visibility in rapidly evolving categories," Apple is quoted saying. OpenAI and Apple do have a deal in place which allows ChatGPT to run on iPhones and other Apple devices. But reports say neither of the companies get monetary benefits or other exceptions from the deal. Musk has become quite regular with his fights, especially with Altman and OpenAI, and all these questions are likely to be raised if he decides to go ahead with the threat of legally fighting Apple and its practices.
