India Great 'Convinced Key Decision-Makers' To Bring IPL 2025 Playoffs To Punjab: Report
Following the news of the shifting of the venues of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Playoffs, from Hyderabad and Kolkata to New Chandigarh and Ahmedabad, details have emerged that former India spinner Harbhajan Singh played a huge role in the shifting of the fixtures to Punjab. According to sources close to the development, Harbhajan Singh took pains to convince the top brass of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of the stadium's suitability to host the matches in the present weather conditions.
"Harbhajan pushed hard for it. He convinced key decision-makers that New Chandigarh is ready, both in terms of facilities and audience enthusiasm. He wasn't just lobbying; he was deeply involved in inspection visits, pitch discussions, and logistical planning," confirmed a source to IANS.
Harbhajan, the Chief Cricketing Advisor of the Punjab Cricket Association, has been actively promoting cricket in the region post-retirement and has always voiced concerns about the lack of international and IPL-level matches in Punjab after Mohali's decline as a regular host venue.
With the successful completion of the stadium in Mullanpur, he saw an opportunity to bring elite-level cricket back to the heartland.
The BCCI announced the schedule for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Playoffs on Tuesday. After 70 action-packed league-stage matches, the spotlight will shift to the New PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh as it gears up to host the much-awaited Qualifier 1 - featuring the top-two ranked sides on May 29, followed by an engrossing Eliminator clash on May 30.
Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest cricket stadium in the world will host an electrifying Qualifier 2 and the grand Final. Qualifier 2, to be played between the loser of Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator, will take place on June 1. The highly anticipated summit clash is set to be played on June 3.
The new venues for the Playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council, keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters.

"Gautam Gambhir Must...": Jasprit Bumrah's Test Future 'Going To Be An Issue' As Star Needs 'Long Gap'
If the loss against England in the first Test in Leeds was not enough, the Indian cricket team were dealt another blow as news came that Jasprit Bumrah would be rested for the second Test starting on July 2. BCCI sources confirmed the development to NDTV. Even before India departed for the long Tour of England, it had been declared that Bumrah would play only three of the five Tests due to workload management. Bumrah had been out of team for a lengthy period after a back issue during the Border Gavaskar Trophy. However, now question are being raised on the future of Bumrah's Test career, considering he is not available for all the matches despite significant gap between them. The first Test ran from June 20-24, while the second match in Birmingham will start from July 2. That's a week's gap. The third Test at Lord's will start from July 10, before the the action shifts to Manchester for the fourth Test starting on July 23. The fifth Test starts on July 31. "Jasprit Bumrah will not be available. It's not official, but maybe it's official, for all we know. He will be rested for the second match and will directly play the third match, and you wonder, as there was a seven-day gap between the two matches, and he is not playing," Aakash Chopra, former India star, said on his YouTube channel. "Then there will be a five-day Test and a three-day gap. He will be available on the 10th of July now. That is a serious concern. If you need such big gaps, Bumrah's future as a Test cricketer, it is going to be an issue. Gautam Gambhir must find himself in a tricky position now. There was an old interview, 'I do not believe in workload management' that was Gautam's stand back then. That makes it a little different. He is an important player." Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are the two other specialist pacers in the squad. Medium pace allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is another option. Most indications point towards left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh replacing Bumrah in the XI. But again, no one could confirm the development. While Arshdeep has not played any Test, he has ODI and T20I experience. In T20Is, he is India's all-time highest wicket-taker with 99 scalps in 63 games.

Ravi Shastri minces no words as he explains why India deserve every ‘pound of flesh' from ICC revenue: ‘Look at…'
Amidst demands for greater equity in how cricket at the highest level shares its profits and revenues amongst players, member nations of the ICC, and other stakeholders, former Indian player and coach Ravi Shastri remains bullish about India receiving compensation for being the driver of the cricket economy. India and the BCCI currently earn 38.5% of the ICC's annual revenue model.(BCCI- X) The recent past has seen a plethora of criticisms regarding how India receive the lion's share of the revenue generated by the ICC. Following a decision made in 2023, the BCCI has been set to receive 38.5% under the distribution structure, over five times as much as the next-highest band of national boards, those being England, Australia, and Pakistan. Shastri, however, saw no issue with this, and saw it as the just results given how much the Indian market sustains the cricket economy, via the largest share of the audience as well as cricket's most profitable tournament in the IPL. 'Absolutely, I would want more. Because most of the money that's generated comes from India. So it's only fair that they get their share of pound of flesh,' claimed Shastri in an interview with Wisden. 'It's relative, it's economies. If tomorrow there might be another economy that's stronger, money might come from there like it did in the 70s-80s, and the chunk of the money went somewhere else.' Shastri argues overseas television income dependent on India India's dominance over the distribution model has been further criticised as a symptom of the BCCI's increasing sway on the machinations of the ICC itself: while it is true that India's media rights and revenue generation dwarfs every other member nation of the ICC, it has also allowed for a greater political foothold in one of the widest-followed global sports. This has reflected in India's ability to play the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 on their terms, for example, or push for a larger chunk of the international window to be reallocated for the IPL in coming years. Regardless, such is the financial boost that India brings to cricket with a potential audience of 1.4 billion people that Shastri believes there is an argument for even greater a share, pointing out how overseas tours often blossom when India are visiting. 'So I think it's only fair, and it shows in the revenues. When India travel, look at the television rights, look at the television income that comes for an India series. So it's only fair that they get whatever they're getting now, if not more,' concluded Shastri.
