Apara Mehta worked 17 days without sleep on Devdas and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi: ‘It was only death after that, not even hospital'
Apara Mehta was part of two crucial projects of her life in the year 2000 – the daily soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas. While both projects brought her immense fame, the experience pushed her to the brink, leaving her feeling as though there was nothing beyond it but death.
In a recent interview with Friday Talkies, Apara recalled the time when she worked round the clock for 17 days managing the shoot for both Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Devdas.
She said, 'In the year 2000, around Diwali, I received a call on my landline. The person on the other side said, 'I am Sanjay Leela Bhansali speaking.' My mouth fell open. I was making Aloo tikki when I picked the call. He then said, 'I am making a film called Devdas, I am offering a very tiny part to you but I feel you fit the role perfectly.' I couldn't say a thing to him. He then called me to meet him. I immediately left to see him. When I went to his house, Leela Behan opened the door and she happily told to me in Gujarati, 'I suggested your name.''

After many meetings, Apara Mehta was told she would have to shoot for 12 days for the mujra 'Kaahe Ched Ched Mohe' in Devds. She said, 'I thought I will adjust my shoot timings for Kyunki Saas Bhi, but that shoot got extended to 17 days. In these 17 days neither could I cancel Devdas shoot, nor could I extend my request to not shoot for Kyunki at night after 12 days.'
Apara added, 'I have worked round the clock for 17 days and nights, it was after this I realised, that there is just death after this. Hospital is also not an option. I used to go for my Devdas shoot with blood shot eyes because I was sleep deprived. But this was an experience. I was so happy to see the set of Devdas. I looked heavenly.'
Apara Mehta endured it all because Devdas was her dream project, something she manifested secretly.
In the same interview, the veteran actress recalled, 'When I read the news that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is going to make Devdas. I secretly thought to myself that if ever I do a film it will be something like Devdas. However, I had not shared this with anyone.'
Apara Mehta, who played the role of Savita Virani in the Smriti Irani family drama, featured as Badi Aapa in the Shah Rukh Khan-Aishwarya Rai-starrer.

Umesh Shukla denies Rs 8 crore bribery rumours involving Aamir Khan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra: 'PK' row
Umesh Shukla denied rumors that Aamir Khan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra bribed him with Rs 8 crore to shelve 'OMG: Oh My God!'. He explained similarities with 'PK' were coincidental, as both films explore religion. Both movies remain popular for their thought-provoking themes and storytelling. Aamir Khan 's 2014 blockbuster 'PK' faced comparisons to Akshay Kumar's 2012 film 'OMG: Oh My God!' since both tackled themes related to religion. Recently, Umesh Shukla , the director of 'OMG', dismissed rumors suggesting that Aamir and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra bribed him to halt his film's release. Clarification on Bribery Allegations In a recent interview with Friday Talkies, Umesh dismissed the bribery rumors, clarifying that the claims about Vidhu offering him Rs 8 crore to not make the film were merely gossip and never happened. He emphasized that Rajkumar Hirani , Abhijat Joshi, Chopra, and Aamir Khan are all highly talented and dignified individuals who would never engage in such petty behavior. Similar Ideas and Independent Creations Shukla revealed that his play had been running in theatres for a long time, and that 'PK' writers Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi had already seen it. He suggested they might have independently developed similar ideas. He added that if 'PK' had been released before his film, people might have accused his work of resembling 'PK'. According to him, when creators explore similar themes, some overlap is natural—just as in a love story, where expressions like 'I love you' are expected. Continued Popularity of Both Films Both 'PK' and 'OMG: Oh My God!' achieved tremendous success at the box office and have remained beloved by audiences over the years. Their thought-provoking themes and engaging storytelling continue to resonate, making them popular choices for fans who enjoy revisiting these films time and again.

Ayushmann Khurrana Signs Quirky Family Comedy With Bhushan Kumar And Juno Chopra
Last Updated: Ayushmann Khurrana signs a new comedy with Bhushan Kumar and Juno Chopra. The film starts shooting in September 2025 and promises a quirky, laugh-out-loud ride. After lighting up the box office with Dream Girl 2 and gearing up for his Diwali release Thama, Ayushmann Khurrana is now preparing to dive into a new genre with a full-blown comedy. The actor, who has long been admired for his versatility and sharp comic timing, has reportedly signed an upcoming family comedy backed by Bhushan Kumar and Juno Chopra, the producers behind Pati Patni Aur Woh. According to a Pinkvilla report, the film will be a quirky blend of situational humor and slapstick madness, something Ayushmann has been keen to explore. 'It's an out-and-out comedy for Ayushmann Khurrana. The actor has been looking to do a film in this genre for a while now and has finally found a script that strikes the right balance," revealed a source close to the project. While the film's title and director remain tightly under wraps, casting is already underway, with the producers looking to rope in a stellar ensemble of seasoned performers and leading ladies. The film is set to go on floors in September 2025, with a start-to-finish schedule planned. 'The makers are keeping things low-key for now, but the script is locked, and casting has begun quietly. A director known for delivering commercial comedy hits is likely to helm the film," added the source. This film will slot between Ayushmann's other major ventures, including the Aditya Satpodar-directed Thama (which is part of Dinesh Vijan's horror-comedy universe) and his spy-comedy with Dharma Productions, co-starring Sara Ali Khan, scheduled for a 2026 release. Once he wraps up the comedy caper, Ayushmann will shift gears for a more emotional project — a family dramedy with none other than Prem specialist Sooraj Barjatya. 'That film goes on floors in November. Ayushmann is beyond thrilled to work with Sooraj Barjatya and play a 'Prem-like' role — it's a dream come true. He's already allotted bulk dates to Rajshri Productions," the source confirmed. With a packed slate of diverse genres — from spooky thrills to heartfelt drama and laugh-out-loud comedy — Ayushmann Khurrana is poised to deliver something for everyone in the coming years.
