"Bear Bets" are real wagers that Chris "The Bear" Fallica is actually making.
There's something incredibly special about fall sports.
Between college football, NFL and MLB postseason, there is fun to be had for all — particularly when it comes to laying a few wagers.
That's where I come in.
One of the wagers below features Kyle Shanahan, and it's what I believe to be a really solid bet.
Let's take a look at where I'm sprinkling my cash this week.
Penn State to make the CFP
This is my favorite bet in college football this season. No team in the sport is more predictable or trustworthy than Penn State, which usually hammers the teams it is supposed to, and loses to top-five, top-10-type teams.
This puts the Nittany Lions at a 10-2 floor, as they have both Oregon and Ohio State on the slate.
The Oregon game is at State College, so let's say PSU wins that game. Maybe the game at Iowa is tricky? Potentially lose at Ohio State? That's it.
Even the detractors of Drew Allar have to think Penn State is returning to the College Football Playoff behind a powerful running game and elite defense, even without Abdul Carter. Some people do not like laying a price like this, but I have no issue doing so.
A 10-2 record and a CFP berth for Penn State — book it.

Kyle Shanahan to win Coach of the Year
Just about everything that could go wrong for the 49ers last year did. Injuries to Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams and others. Blown late leads.
It was just one of those years in the Bay after another agonizing Super Bowl loss.
There isn't a ton of depth here, but injury luck doesn't tend to repeat itself in consecutive years, meaning expect the Niners to be healthier this season. The schedule is about as easy as could be coming off a 6-11 season, and, with a win total of 10.5, the Niners are supposed to be good.

Robert Saleh returns to San Francisco to coach a defense that has played as if it missed his leadership over the last couple of seasons. Maybe Shanahan doesn't fit the mold of a young head coach or a head coach from a team that's going to surprise, but there's a chance the Niners could post something like 12-5 and win the division, given that schedule, especially if the concerns over Rams QB Matthew Stafford are realized.
I just don't get how guys like Aaron Glenn are shorter-priced in this market, given how the Jets are going to win like six games.

Clayton McCullough to win NL Manager of the Year
Okay, by now we've all made the joke, "Can you name the Marlins manager?"
But Clayton McCullough and the Marlins might be getting the last laugh.
The former Dodgers first-base coach has Miami on the cusp of a .500 record after sweeping the Yankees. While it might be a little too much to ask him to reach the playoffs given the strength of the current NL wild cards, it's not unreasonable to think he's in the mix for NL Manager of the Year consideration.
This has been a lineup and rotation in flux all season and if Miami actually got some decent pitching from Sandy Alcántara in the first half of the season, it might actually have a legit chance at a wild card.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy is a big favorite here, and I guess he should be. But in terms of doing more with less, McCullough certainly deserves consideration if the Marlins finish with a winning record.
Obviously, I'm late to the party here in terms of the number, but I'll jump in now in case they continue this hot streak.

Commanders rookie running back is no flash in the pan
Every summer, in every training camp around the NFL, fans and media members select one guy for their "summer crush." We've found that guy for the Washington Commanders this summer: running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt. A seventh-round pick from the University of Arizona, Croskey-Merritt has a unique story. First, he was a zero-star recruit from Montgomery, Alabama. After a record-breaking career at Alabama State, Croskey-Merritt wanted to face stiffer competition to help his chances of making it to the NFL. He rushed for 1,190 yards and 17 touchdowns at New Mexico in 2023 and transferred to Arizona in 2024. In his only start for the Wildcats, Croskey-Merritt rushed for over 100 yards before a bogus eligibility issue cost him the rest of his final collegiate season. The NCAA's poor decision likely cost Croskey-Merritt in the draft. The Commanders were thankful he was there when it was their turn to make their final pick. Since his arrival, coaches and teammates have praised "Bill." Yes, Bill is Croskey-Merritt's nickname and the name by which everyone calls him. Last week, head coach Dan Quinn praised Bill's "violent cuts." On Monday, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury met with the media, and it was his turn to praise Bill. "Bill, for a young guy who loves football, competes, very explosive," Kingsbury said. "He got ruled ineligible at Arizona and stayed and played scout team the whole year, which is like nobody would do that, so that tells you right there the type of passion he has for, and it shows up." Kingsbury can't wait to see the rookie in the preseason. "There's no doubt Bill's had some good flashes for a young guy," he said. Check out this video captured at Monday's practice. A violent cut, indeed. Croskey-Merritt is not only making Washington's roster, but he will, at some point, figure into the Commanders' offensive plans. Highlights from Texas A&M's 5th preseason practice on Monday night
Texas A&M's fifth practice of the preseason took place on Monday night, as several players, mainly on offense, stood out, including freshman wide receiver Jerome Myles, while starting quarterback Marcel Reed and likely backup signal caller Miles O'Neill worked on 15-to-20-yard passes, both performing above average, which is expected during any practice. Yes, even in the NFL, quarterbacks don't always connect on deep passes, which was the case for both Aggie QBs during the extended throwing session. Still, this was an early throwing session that should not be taken too seriously, knowing that several receivers were jogging at the end of their routes. Moving on, progress has been made, and the position to note from Monday is tight end. While it's predicted that Alabama/Texas transfer TE Amari Niblack will win the starting job due to his receiving ability, we can't out redshirt junior Theo Melin Öhrström, who has continued to progress as a route runner after making several impressive touchdown grabs last season, but was not consistent enough, including dropping a key pass during A&M's 4OT loss to Auburn. Don't forget about freshman TE Kiotti Armstrong, who has already turned heads this preseason. Another tight end transfer that should make an immediate impact in the run game is Nate Boerkircher, who, despite not bringing in a ton of production through the air, could surprise if given the chance. Still, the focus was mainly on the revamped wide receiver room, led by five-star freshman Jerome Myles. Former Georgia QB is now a college football analyst
Former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Jake Fromm will have a new job this fall. He is joining Atlanta News First as a sports analyst. Fromm has spent time in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, New York Giants and Washington Commanders. Most recently, he was a member of the Detroit Lions' practice squad for the 2024 NFL season. However, the Lions waived Fromm ahead of the 2025 NFL draft and he remains unsigned. Fromm will provide both pre- and post-game coverage with his new program, which debuts on Aug. 30. Georgia begins its 2025 college football season on the same day as the Bulldogs host the Marshall Thundering Herd. 'I'm so excited to join the Atlanta News First team and spend time with Georgia's passionate fanbase every Saturday this fall,' said Fromm. 'We're going to give them a fun show and make sure they've got everything they need before kickoff and after the final whistle.'
