5 teens to face charges in Zara Qairina case today

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Court Complex is expected to draw significant public attention today as five teenagers are due to be charged in connection with the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. Crowds, including members of the media and security personnel, began gathering as early as 7am. The teenagers, accompanied by their parents or guardians, are expected to appear before the Court for Children to face charges under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code. They will be brought to court from the Children's Interview Centre at the Kepayan police headquarters. The Sabah Law Society has reminded the public that Section 15 of the Child Act 2001 prohibits the publication or sharing of any information that could lead to the identification of children involved in such proceedings. Since Zara's body was exhumed on Aug 9, Netizens have attempted to gather and circulate their own information, at times disrupting reporters' work and press conferences. Yesterday, the Sabah Journalists Association urged the public to stop interfering with media coverage. Following this, the authorities have tightened access, permitting only registered media representatives into today's proceedings. By 7.30am, police had set up a roadblock at the court entrance, with about 80 officers stationed around the complex.
