Despite the added price, six-wheel bakkies have proven popular in Mzansi over the past few years. One of the most iconic is the G-Class-based Brabus 6×6, which recently made headlines, but perhaps the more practical and capable farm counterpart is Ulterio Motiv's six-wheel Land Cruiser conversion. Owing to such an adoring community and aftermarket support, the Toyota model features its very own gathering dubbed the Hankook Land Cruiser Festival. Also known as the Land Cruiser Festival & Africa Record, the 2025 edition is set to take place from Friday to Sunday at Sondela Nature Reserve & Spa in Bela-Bela, Limpopo.
Organised by Trio Events, the festival offers a range of activities for attendees. These include outdoor exhibitors, food stalls, live performances, kids' entertainment, arts and crafts markets, warm water swimming pools, and the LA Sport Pretoria Cruiser Action Arena. Additionally, participants can enjoy a sunset game drive in convoy and a Sunday buffet breakfast. The festival also aims to set an African record by gathering the largest number of Land Cruisers in one location.
Local tuning house Ulterio Motiv will be there and plans on showing off two six-wheeled conversions based on the Land Cruiser 79: A 2.8 GD-6 Single Cab and a Double Cab. Both have been fitted with an additional axle, with the chassis developed in-house by Ulterio Motiv. A third vehicle, the SVI Engineering Max 3 Six-Wheeler, has also received a 6×4 chassis conversion by the company. That model is intended for military applications.
The Land Cruiser Festival, now in its latest edition, brings together more than 50 exhibitors and a wide range of fans, aftermarket suppliers, and vehicle builders. It has also become the site of regular record attempts involving large groupings of Land Cruiser vehicles — a tradition Ulterio Motiv will be participating in this year.
Ulterio Motiv states it's targeting buyers looking for highly adaptable platforms that can be further developed for commercial or specialist use. The company's chassis work allows for greater payload capacity and off-road performance while leaving room for further customisation. Mechanical expert Juan Vosloo and business development director Nicol Louw will be on hand to speak with visitors and discuss the technical details behind the builds.

Founded in 2022, Ulterio Motiv has positioned itself as a low-volume builder focused on niche utility vehicles. While the company is still new to the scene, it is already working on additional projects aimed at the civil and defence sectors. Festival entry starts at R60, with access to off-road activities from R350. Ulterio Motiv will be located at Stand E38.

Toyota plans to introduce three fully-electric models in South Africa in 2026, a senior executive said on Thursday, entering a nascent electric vehicle (EV) market where Chinese rivals such as BYD are already competing with European carmakers. Volvo dominates EV sales in South Africa, followed by BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but Chinese EV makers are starting to flood the market as they seek new markets amid restrictions on exports to the US and Europe. Toyota only sells hybrid EVs in South Africa, but leads with a commanding 67% of the market for hybrids and plug-in hybrids in 2024, with models such as the Corolla Cross. 'We're launching battery EVs at the beginning of 2026, so we will have three new battery EVs,' Toyota South Africa CEO Andrew Kirby told Reuters on the sidelines of a car components conference, without providing further details. 'We do not believe one powertrain is going to dominate in the future. So we'll have internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery EVs, fuel cell EVs and potentially a carbon neutral internal combustion engine.' Low incomes, high import duties, unreliable power availability and a lack of sufficient charging infrastructure have long hampered manufacturers' efforts to sell EVs in South Africa, whose share of total sales is still low. On Chinese competition, Kirby said while he welcomes competition, 'it's a strategic concern for us and we need to make sure we respond in the right way and as quickly as possible. It's a big challenge'. South Africa's automotive sector 'is at an inflection point', he added, with fairly flat production volumes, a drop in local content and a surge in imported vehicle sales. This has prompted the big local car manufacturers, including Toyota, BMW, Isuzu and Volkswagen, to put together a policy recommendation document sent to the trade and industry minister on how to support and protect the industry, Kirby said. 'We have some taxation structures that are a bit counterproductive and so we've made some fiscally neutral policy proposals,' Kirby said, adding that proposals also include the restructuring of the rebate system. 'We are hoping that in the next six months there will be some short-term interventions that can be announced.'

What to expect from South Africa-bound new Toyota RAV4
The outgoing XA50 generation, which became the world best-selling vehicle in 2024, will end its seven-year production run in South Africa next year. Named the world's best selling vehicle of 2024 with global sales, including those of its Chinese sibling, the Wildlander, of 1 187 000 units, the current fifth generation Toyota RAV4 will officially bow-out next year in South Africa after what will be seven years. On-sale, globally, since 2018, the internally named XA50 will make way for the XA60 at an undisclosed time in 2026, with the exact powertrain and model line-up still to be revealed. The first generation RAV4 to be powered solely by hybrid powertrains, XA60 rides on a heavily revised of its predecessor's TNGA-K platform with not only uprated suspension joints, but also upgraded frame mounts and, in the case of the new off-road focused variant, 13 mm more ground clearance. Said to be more practical than the XA50, the XA60's interior has also been dramatically to include the same steering wheel as the North American Tacoma bakkie, a centre console seemingly derived from the Land Cruiser Prado and a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Based on the US-variant, the RAV4 also gains a new freestanding infotainment system in two sizes; 10.5-inches and 12.9-inches, both equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In terms of specification, notable items, which will vary depending on the eventual trim level, comprise a Head-Up Display, heated front seats, a nine-speaker JBL sound system and the first-time inclusion of Toyota'a Safety Sense array of safety and driver assistance systems. As mentioned, the RAV4's biggest difference from previous generations involves the solitary availability of hybrid powertrains as Toyota has opted to drop all 'conventional' combustion engine options. Modelled around the stalwart 2.5-litre petrol engine, outputs, again based on those of the Stateside model, amount to 166 kW or 174 kW with the inclusion of a second electric motor on E-Four all-wheel-drive models. At the range's summit, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combines the same petrol engine with a 22.7-kWh battery pack powering two electric motors. The result is a combined system output of 235 kW, more than not only the outgoing RAV4 PHEV, but also than all of Toyota's current GR models excluding the GR Supra. What's more, the PHEV will the sole option for the new GR Sport, which finally becomes an export variant having previously be marketed solely in Europe and Japan. Reported to have a starting price tag of $35 000 in the States, which amount to R when directly converted and without taxes, the RAV4's market arrival, as mentioned, will take place next year at a still undisclosed time. As a reminder, the current line-up spans five models priced from R719 800 for the entry-level all-wheel-drive 2.0 GX-R to R858 500 for the flagship Hybrid VX E-Four. The matter under review was between The Green Connection and Natural Justice as applicants and the respondents being: Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Director General: Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, TotalEnergies EP South Africa block 567 (PTY) LTD, Shell Exploration & Production South Africa. On Wednesday, Judge Mangcu-Lockwood's judgment called for the Department of Minerals and Petroleum to conduct fresh assessments, gather more information, and facilitate public participation. This means that the South African government's approval of TotalEnergies EP South Africa's environmental authorisation to drill for oil and gas in offshore areas known as Block 5/6/7 along the South-West Coast has been set aside after it was challenged by the Green Connection and Natural Justice. Mangcu-Lockwood ordered that the decision made by the Director General: Department of Mineral Resources and Energy on April 17 2023, granting environmental authorization to the fourth respondent (TotalEnergies EP) for exploratory operations in Block 5/6/7, is reviewed and set aside. It further stated that the fourth respondent must be given the opportunity to submit new or amended assessments, as deemed necessary, to address the deficiencies identified in the review including that a public participation process. Shahil Singh, Legal Advisor to The Green Connection, said the court found the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) failed to fully examine the consequences of a major oil spill on local and neighbouring coastal communities. 'Total and Shell will now need to undertake additional studies, make these plans publicly available, and properly assess both coastal and cross-border risks before any decision is taken,' said Singh. The Green Connection's Strategic Lead, Liziwe McDaid said in response to the order: 'Our country's laws demand full, open, and honest assessment, not partial studies, not secrecy, and not ignoring inconvenient truths. Natural Justice, Defending Rights Programme Manager, Melissa Groenink-Groves added: 'This judgment is a victory in the growing opposition to oil and gas exploration in our country. Recently, a number of oil and gas projects have been given Environmental Authorisation, but this judgment again confirms that companies must follow due process, undertake comprehensive assessments and provide communities with an opportunity to have their voices heard, in respect of all relevant information. It confirms that our fight for our environmental rights is strong, and that we must continue for the future for our children.
