Sabah introduces new diving safety SOPs ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026
The move underscores the government's commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism in the lead-up to the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.
Sabah Dive Squad Club president Sim Fui welcomed the initiative, describing it as both timely and crucial in enhancing diver safety while supporting the state's tourism industry.
"Sabah is renowned for its beautiful diving spots from the state capital, Sepanggar, Kota Belud, Kudat, Lahad Datu, to Semporna.
"According to the Sabah Fisheries Department, the scuba diving industry has contributed over RM500 million to the state's revenue. That figure is a significant boost to Sabah's economy.
"However, it is concerning when diving accidents occur, especially those involving international visitors. Strengthening SOP compliance is essential to maintain our reputation as a world-class diving destination," he said in a statement.
Sim and the committee members from the club had paid a courtesy visit to the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Josie Lai at Wisma Tun Fuad Stephens here yesterday.
During the meeting, Lai had said that the ministry expressed its intention to release the SOP publicly soon and welcomed the club's support in educating industry stakeholders.
In line with this, the Sabah Dive Squad Club will be organising a safety and medical talk for its members on July 20, aiming to raise awareness and reinforce best practices among divers and operators.
The event follows recent incidents involving diver fatalities, some of which have been attributed to negligence.
"We welcome this collaboration with the ministry and will incorporate the updated SOPs into our upcoming safety talk.

He said the change significantly lowered their electricity bill, which was a primary concern due to their constant use of air conditioners and computers. Yee views the investment as a necessary long-term strategy and noted that a 15 to 17kW solar system is a viable investment for many small businesses. The government is currently reviewing the Net Energy Metering programme and is expected to announce a new scheme this month. This follows the revised electricity tariff structure to ensure a more equitable distribution of energy subsidies.

Company, two directors charged with using fake Sirim stickers on retreaded tyres
SEPANG: A company and its two directors were charged in the Sessions Court here on Friday (Aug 15) with using fake Sirim logo stickers on 107 retreaded tyres of various brands and sizes last February. The company, Yik Woh Tyre Enterprise Sdn Bhd, represented by its directors Yip Wei Leong and Yip Wing Kee as the accused, pleaded not guilty before judge Ahmad Fuad Othman. According to the charge, the company, Wei Leong, 43, and Wing Kee, 70, were, in the course of trade, found to have made false representations by using Sirim MS 224:2005 logo stickers on 107 retreated tyres of various brands and sizes for supply without Sirim's approval. The offence was allegedly committed at No. 11, 13 and 15, Jalan Meranti 11, Meranti Jaya Industrial Park, Puchong, at 11.30am on Feb 13. The charges against the two directors were framed under Section 21(b) of the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, which carries a maximum fine of RM200,000 or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction. For a second or subsequent offence, the penalty is a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both. Meanwhile, the company was charged under Section 21(a) of the same law, which provides for a fine of up to RM500,000, and for a second or subsequent offence, a maximum fine of RM1mil. The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Hafizi Abdul Halim and prosecuting officer Nur Abyan Anuar from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, while the accused were represented by lawyer Aaron Chang. Earlier, Mohd Hafizi applied for both men to be granted bail of RM20,000 each. However, Chang requested a reduction on the grounds of one of the accused's age and the good cooperation they had provided.
