Horse Racing as a Metaphor for Life Explored in Sanfic Industria Title ‘The Curve'
Set in Montevideo, Uruguay, documentary 'The Curve' ('La curva') follows legendary horse trainer, 74-year-old Jorge Firpo, on the cusp of retirement as its director, Agustín Flores, reckons with the suicide of his father. What starts as an exploration of legacy turns into a moving treatise on emotional fragility, resilience and the drive we need to keep pushing on. More from Variety 'Puan' Co-Helmer Benjamín Nashtat, Composer Santiago Dolan Board Sanfic Industria WIP Title 'Bagman' The Dominican Republic Targets a Co-Production Axis With Chile Record Number of Submissions for Sanfic's Santiago Lab, as Chilean Project Market Builds International Profile 'We live in a system that constantly forces us to compete. When we are no longer functional, the same machinery discards us,' mused Flores, adding: ' 'The Curve' is a documentary about the cycle of life in a unique, highly competitive context where animals are the center and people trade illusions. Leaving the track is inevitable; it will happen to all of us. The question is: in what way is life worth living before that happens? Life without passion has no meaning.' Project participating in Sanfic Industria's WIP section has an impressive development trajectory. It was a Spotlighted Project at the Marché du Film 2025, won the Cannes Docs Award at Ventana Sur 2024, the DocsBarcelona Industry Award at VS 2024 and the DocCo Award at VS 2024, among others. It also received an official mention in the WIP Documentaries in Progress section at Atlantidoc 2024. This is Flores' second feature documentary. He admits that he barely got any distribution for his debut doc, 'The Forgotten' ('Los Olvidados') in 2018. 'But I was inexperienced. I'm working to internationalize 'The Curve' before it's ready to be screened and I expect to get better results,' he said, adding that he hopes to work with streaming services, whether global, regional or local. According to Flores, 'The Curve' refers to a very specific area in Montevideo around the racetrack. 'For me, 'The Curve' is a metaphor for life. The machine is ruthless and discards us when we are no longer functional parts. We are all running this race,' he said. 'The grief over my father's suicide becomes an invisible engine driving this story. As the camera explores Jorge's life and legacy, it also reveals my internal struggle to find meaning amid the pain. Both stories intertwine in a shared quest: how to face the frustrations that throw us off course and find the strength to keep moving forward, even when everything seems lost,' he explained. 'The Curve' is produced by Raquel Ferreiro of Trapecista Prods., founded in Montevideo in 2018, which has produced documentary features and experimental videos. It produced 'The Forgotten,' which premiered in cinemas and is now available online at The documentary is co-produced by Spain's Zona Cielo Films and Insumisa Films. Madrid-based Zona Cielo Films, founded by Guzmán Infanzón y Valentina Ferreira, has produced documentaries, music videos and collaborates with art musuems and galleries, among others. Apple TV+ is hiking prices 30% as streaming inflation marches on
Apple TV+ now costs $12.99 per month, up from the $9.99 price tag it has had since October 2023. The 30% increase will take effect in the next 30 days for existing subscribers. However, prices won't change for the streamer's annual plan or Apple's Apple One bundle, which includes Apple TV+. Unlike all other major streamers, Apple TV+ has never had ads for on-demand shows — and it's not getting them now. Even after the price hike, Apple TV+ still costs less than most of its ad-free peers. Amazon Prime Video is the cheapest high-profile streamer at under $12 without ads, while the revamped Paramount+ also charges $13 monthly for its ad-free plan. Still, Apple's streaming subscribers may be disappointed to hear they can no longer get ad-free shows and movies for the same price as the ad-supported versions of Disney+, Hulu, or HBO Max. FASTs are racing past paid streamers Yet another streaming price increase could continue to fuel the rapid growth of free-to-access services like YouTube, Tubi, and The Roku Channel. YouTube posted one of its largest viewership gains ever in July, according to Nielsen. Google's video giant gobbled up 13.4% of watchtime on connected TVs in the US, up from 12.8% in June. Free, ad-supported TV services — also known as FASTs — have taken off this year. Roku's FAST service just had its biggest monthly jump in viewership ever, Nielsen data shows, by rising to a 2.8% share of US connected TV time in July. Fox-owned Tubi has also made strides this year, though its viewership share has leveled off this summer at 2.2%. That's still higher than Paramount+, Peacock, HBO Max, and Apple TV+ (which has never appeared on Nielsen's monthly streaming charts).

Sugar Season 2: Release date speculation, cast and plot details – Everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on August 21, 2025, 19:30 IST Last updated August 21, 2025, 12:04 IST Apple TV+'s Sugar blew everyone away with its slick detective vibes and that wild sci-fi twist in Season 1. Now, fans are practically losing it waiting for Season 2 of this neo-noir gem. From when it might drop to who's back and what's next for John Sugar, here's the full scoop on everything known so far. When's Sugar Season 2 Hitting Screens? No official date has been spilled yet, but the tea points to a 2025 premiere. Apple TV+ gave the green light for Season 2 back in October 2024, and cameras started rolling in LA by February 2025, with some globe-trotting scenes shot overseas. Word on the street is production wrapped in August 2025, so they're probably deep in editing and all that post-production magic right now. Based on how Apple TV+ rolls with shows like this, a mid-2025 vibe—think June to September—feels like a safe bet. Season 1 dropped in April 2024, so a similar timeline makes sense. Keep your eyes peeled on Apple TV+'s socials for a trailer or some sneaky teasers to lock in that date. Who's in the Cast? Returning Stars and New Blood Colin Farrell is back as John Sugar, the private eye with a heart of gold and an alien secret that flipped the script. Dude's performance was straight-up electric, nailing that mix of tough and tender, so no surprise he's the anchor for Season 2. But what about the rest of the Season 1 crew? Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Ruby), Amy Ryan (Melanie), James Cromwell (Jonathan Siegel), Anna Gunn (Margit), Dennis Boutsikaris (Bernie Siegel), Nate Corddry (David Siegel), Sydney Chandler (Olivia Siegel), and Alex Hernandez (Kenny) haven't been confirmed yet. Ruby peaced out to another planet in the finale, so her comeback's a big question mark, but the alien plot could pull her back. Melanie's tight with Sugar, so fingers crossed she's in for the ride. Season 2's bringing some fresh faces to shake things up. Jin Ha ( Pachinko ) is playing a boxer mixed up with some shady folks, Laura Donnelly ( The Nevers ) is a woman who's not falling for Sugar's charm, and Tony Dalton ( Better Call Saul ) steps in as a sheriff's lieutenant. Plus, Shea Whigham ( Fargo ), Sasha Calle ( The Flash ), and Raymond Lee ( Quantum Leap ) are joining the party. Whigham's some government guy helping Sugar, Calle's a hustler on his team, and Lee's role is still hush-hush, which has fans buzzing with theories. This crew's gonna crank up the drama and keep the noir-sci-fi mashup popping. What's the Plot for Sugar Season 2? Season 2 throws John Sugar back into the LA grind, tackling a new missing persons case while chasing a personal lead—finding his missing sister. That Season 1 bombshell about Sugar being an alien watching humans? Yeah, it's about to get wilder. The finale left jaws on the floor with Henry (Jason Butler Harner) turning out to be a shady alien tied to a kidnapping, maybe even Sugar's sister. This season's got Sugar juggling a fresh mystery with his hunt for answers about his family and why he's stuck on Earth. Expect that gritty noir feel—think double-crosses, dark secrets, and moral gray zones—mixed with sci-fi craziness. With aliens now exposed, Sugar's on the run from hunters while facing off with Henry's dark side. Showrunner Sam Catlin ( Breaking Bad ) is leaning hard into Sugar's search for where he belongs, moving from just spying on humans to figuring out who he is. New characters like Ha's boxer and Donnelly's tough-as-nails role are gonna stir up trouble, and LA's shady streets will keep the vibe moody and intense. Oh, and word is they filmed a car chase in Downtown LA with Farrell doing his own stunts—bet that's gonna look insane. Ahmedabad Plane Crash Aman Shukla is a post-graduate in mass communication .
