Ascend Airways eyes November cargo ops
PETALING JAYA: Ascend Airways Malaysia, a new Malaysia-based airline and a part of Avia Solutions Group – the largest ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) provider in the world, has advanced to Phase 3 of its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) application process. The new ACMI and charter solutions provider is targeting to launch its cargo operations in November 2025, with passenger flights to follow.
In 2024, Ascend Airways Malaysia was granted its Conditional Air Service Permit (CASP) from the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) and has since been working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) in order to obtain its Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
The process is currently in its final stages with full flight operations expected to commence by the end of 2025.
The Kuala Lumpur-based ACMI and charter airline will offer both passenger and cargo operations. Its first B737-800 freighter aircraft will arrive in Malaysia Q3'25 to facilitate the necessary processes of the issuance of the full AOC and the launch of the airline's cargo operations.
Subsequently, the second and third passenger B737-800 aircraft will be inducted into the Malaysian airline's fleet by end of 2025 and early 2026, respectively.
'As it is our mission to support the growth of local and regional airlines, we want to become a trusted ACMI partner that can help them increase operational agility and capture the rising demand for passenger and cargo operations, which is on the rise in the Asia-Pacific region,' said Ascend Airways Malaysia CEO Germal Singh Khera.
As a new ACMI airline in Malaysia, he added they are continuously grateful for the support, global outlook and approach they receive from the Transport Ministry, CAAM, Mavcom and other relevant authorities that are advancing the aviation industry in Malaysia.
'This overwhelming support has allowed us to set up a robust operational foundation to assist air operators and their ambition in the region,' said Germal Singh.
Ascend Airways Malaysia aims to provide a vital solution of aircraft wet leasing in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific, enabling airlines and logistics companies to scale their operations and secure additional revenue during peak season. This model also allows air operators to navigate operational challenges such as unexpected flight disruptions and prolonged maintenance events.
'Ascend Airways remains focused and committed to deliver flexible ACMI solutions and develop its seasonal fleet strategy between the UK and Malaysia, and the Asia-Pacific region. ACMI is a proven solution for airlines seeking to efficiently meet dynamic travel demand and unlock new revenue opportunities. We are resolute in our aspirations to be leaders in this space,' said Alastair Willson, CEO of the UK-based Ascend Airways, the sister company of Ascend Airways Malaysia.

MCMC calls up logs of all phone calls, says no personal info accessed
Data collected on phone calls and internet usage will be used strictly for 'the generation of official statistics to support evidence-based policymaking', said MCMC. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has defended its directive requiring phone companies to hand over data on all mobile phone calls made from January to March. The commission said no personal information would be accessed, processed, or disclosed by the commission. It said that the data requested was anonymised and contained no information that can be used to identify any person. The telecommunications companies are given the option to either process the data within their own secure environment and submit the required anonymised and aggregated output to the MCMC; or for those without processing capabilities, submit the anonymised data to the commission for processing. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' MCMC said in a statement this evening. The statement came hours after the South China Morning Post, quoting industry sources, said that Putrajaya had ordered mobile phone companies to hand over detailed records of phone calls and internet usage as it broadens controls over online activity. The data collected would be used strictly for generating official statistics to support 'evidence-based policymaking'. It sought such statistics such as the number of active mobile broadband subscriptions and penetration rates by state, district, mukim, local authority and parliamentary and state constituencies. The data was also used for tourism-related purposes, such as generating indicators on visitor numbers and domestic travel trends, MCMC said. 'The use of mobile phone data as a new source of national statistics is a strategic direction set by the government to strengthen the quality and timeliness of statistical outputs for policy and planning purposes,' it added. MCMC said this initiative follows international best practices, mirroring efforts in countries like Indonesia and Brazil, where anonymised telecommunication data is used to improve national statistics without compromising user privacy.

Stablecoin firm Circle scales record high after blockbuster NYSE listing
Jeremy Allaire, CEO and co-founder of Circle Internet Group, the issuer of one of the world's biggest stablecoins, reacts to the price of first trade, on the day of the company's IPO, at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), in New York City, U.S., June 5, 2025. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) -Stablecoin issuer Circle Internet's shares climbed 41% to hit a record high on Friday, extending a stellar run after a blowout market debut on the New York Stock Exchange a day earlier. The New York-based company's stock touched as much as $117.45, more than triple its offer price of $31 and valuing the company at $30.5 billion on a fully diluted basis. The blockbuster listing also reinforced expectations that the IPO market was regaining its momentum after being stifled by tariff-driven volatility. "This is big enough that it extends beyond crypto," said Matt Kennedy, senior strategist at Renaissance Capital, a provider of IPO-focused research and ETFs. Wall Street executives also struck an optimistic tone on Thursday at an industry conference, emphasizing that markets were ready for the right companies. NYSE President Lynn Martin said Circle's IPO was a bellwether for the IPO market this year and not just for crypto listings. Investors are also realizing that the uncertain environment is going to be relatively persistent and focusing on putting their dollars at work, Nasdaq CEO Adena Friedman said. "This is the latest sign of building momentum in the IPO market. We'll likely continue to see moderate activity over the next month, but there is still some tariff uncertainty on the horizon, which is why we're expecting more of a full IPO rebound in the fall," Kennedy said. Digital banking startup Chime is poised to go public in New York next week. Sixth Street-backed cancer diagnostic firm Caris Life Sciences, private equity-backed debt buyer Jefferson Capital and Florida-based Slide Insurance have also joined the IPO pipeline in recent weeks.
