Gloucestershire support network helped us to breastfeed, say mums

BBC News4 days ago
Two mums who struggled to breastfed their babies have said they would have struggled without the help of a peer support group.Manpreet Pinder, who has since trained as a volunteer breastfeeding peer supporter, and her sister, Sukhneet, said without the group they would not have learned how to breastfeed.Ms Pinder, who had her son in 2020, said she found it difficult to breastfeed at first. "Though I loved him from the moment he came into this world, it was really tough," she said.Gloucestershire Breastfeeding Support Network has drop-ins, with a qualified breastfeeding counsellor and peer supporters, in Dursley, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Churchdown, Cirencester and Stroud.
Ms Pinder said of her breastfeeding experience: "It was so painful, I couldn't get him on. I don't have words to describe the pain, it was so bad."
"Before I had a baby, I thought: you need clothes, you need nappies. But I never thought about how you feed your baby," she added."The most difficult part of breastfeeding is at night. Naturally, babies will feed quite a lot at night. "That behaviour of a baby, the fussiness and wanting to latch on all the time, that's a recipe for a horrible time."Ms Pinder's sister Sukhneet said that until she had her own child, she did not realise the extent of what her sister had gone through."It felt like my son was never full, it felt like he was always hungry. I didn't realise there was a skill to breastfeeding," she said.
NHS Breastfeeding Guidance
"I spent so much time during my pregnancy focusing on the birth. I never once thought of the breastfeeding side of things. I just wanted to breastfeed because it's a really good bonding thing."On the NHS website, it says: "In the first week, your baby may want to feed very often. It could be every hour in the first few days."As a very rough guide, your baby should feed at least 8 to 12 times, or more, every 24 hours during the first few weeks."It's fine to feed your baby whenever they are hungry, when your breasts feel full or if you just want to have a cuddle."

Teeth whitening shopper says 'I was sceptical but this works' in 30% off deal Celebrating five years of gleaming smiles, MySweetSmile is offering huge discounts on their award-winning oral care products MySweetSmile's teeth whitening products are popular with shoppers and the brand now has a host of deals live Oral health is crucial for maintaining sparkling teeth, healthy gums and fresh breath, which is why investing in dental care products is a wise decision. However, it can quickly become costly, and with a plethora of options available, shoppers face the challenge of deciding which products are worth the cost. MySweetSmile is one of the few brands that has received high ratings - winning awards and being hailed as the UK's top teeth whitening brand. This product is clinically proven and dentist-approved to lift deep-set stains and prevent new ones from forming without causing any harsh peroxide damage, sensitivity or enamel harm, reports the Manchester Evening News. The Teeth Whitening Strips, also discounted to £24.99 from £29.99, are easy-to-use, non-slip strips that deliver quick results without damaging the enamel. The Precision Teeth Whitening Pen is also available with a £5 discount. It's designed for targeted whitening for those desiring extra sparkly teeth. Refresh your smile £30 £25 My Sweet Smile Shop here Product Description You can shop the Teeth Whitening Strips at My Sweet Smile Its fine brush tip allows customers to apply the formula precisely where needed, and it doesn't use any peroxide, so there should be no sensitivity caused to the teeth. For customers with damaged or sensitive enamel, the Enamel Care Serum could be an ideal choice. This product targets the root cause of sensitivity by repairing and strengthening the enamel. For optimal results, customers simply follow their regular night-time brushing routine before applying the serum, dispense two to three pumps onto their toothbrush, brush for two minutes and spit out any excess. Sensitive gums are a common problem for many, but the Gum Serum from MySweetSmile which is powered by hyaluronic acid, promises to hydrate, soothe inflammation, and strengthen gum tissue. It should be used after a regular brushing routine, with two pumps dispensed onto the tongue and gently spread across the gums, allowing it to absorb for two minutes. MySweetSmile's teeth powder can be used on mature teeth as well as caps, crowns, veneers, and dentures Of course, not every brand suits everyone's needs, and if MySweetSmile isn't the right fit, there are other options available. For instance, Boots offers the Rapid White Blue Light Tooth Whitening System for £23.33, which is clinically proven to whiten teeth up to five shades in two weeks and features sensitive action formulas that are peroxide-free. Alternatively, Lookfantastic sells the Spotlight Whitening Teeth Whitening Pen for £14.95, a handy tool that delivers professional-looking results at home and minimises stains for a brighter smile. Customers have shared their experiences on the MySweetSmile website, including Margaret, 63, who said of the Teeth Whitening Powder: "I always thought my yellow teeth were just part of ageing, but after just a few uses of MySweetSmile, I can't stop smiling at the mirror. My teeth feel so much cleaner and brighter-it's like I've turned back the clock on my smile!". Before and after using MySweetSmile's teeth whitening strips Emily, 39, shared: "I was sceptical at first, but this really works. My teeth looked dull and yellow no matter how much I brushed, but now they're sparkling clean and bright. The compliments haven't stopped, and I feel so much more confident!" Tom, 34, commented on the Teeth Whitening Strips: "I'm always running around with work and barely have time for self-care. These strips fit perfectly into my busy routine, and the results are incredible! My teeth are whiter, and I feel so much more confident." However, on Amazon, some customers had differing opinions. One customer noted: "I have only just started using this, so I have not seen much difference yet but the powder leaves your mouth smelling fresh." Article continues below Another added: "I bought this as it was recommended online. I'm not a smoker and I haven't been drinking much, I do drink coffee regularly but I equally regularly clean my teeth. There's an initial improvement but I'm not sure it's what I expected. I used it every day in the first week and only noticed the difference post brushing. Shortly after that - little difference." The teeth whitening products can be purchased from MySweetSmile.

An expert guide to getting to sleep during the heatwave

Britain is bracing for its fourth heatwave of the summer, with health alerts issued across the country as temperatures are forecast to reach 34C. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned of potentially fatal consequences, implementing heat health warnings for all of England. An amber alert, signifying significant impacts on health and social care, is in effect until Wednesday for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, and the South East. The rest of the nation remains under a yellow warning. The agency highlighted concerns over increased pressure on services and a potential rise in fatalities, particularly among individuals aged 65 and over or those with pre-existing health conditions. As everyone knows, sleeping in the heat can be tough. However, with these tried-and-tested tips, a practical round-up of things to do, and some cooling product picks, the experts at bed specialist Dreams have you backed… The right bedding The foundation of a cool night's sleep is choosing the right materials for your mattress and bedding… Experts at Dreams recommend switching to breathable, moisture-wicking bedding made with temperature-regulating technology. Indeed, temperature-control cooling bedding, mattresses and pillows deliver exceptional cooling comfort, suggests Hannah Hayden, junior buyer at Dreams. She says the combination of cooling internal fillings and a gel-infused foam provides an instant refreshing sensation. 'Helping you to drift off naturally.' 'These mattresses also include natural anti-bacterial protection to reduce allergies and prevent odours, ensuring your sleep environment stays fresh over time.' To complete your cooling sleep system, she suggests breathable cooling pillow protectors and mattress toppers. 'Both designed to enhance airflow and are moisture-wicking, for year-round comfort.' How to stay cool at night Simple strategies to help you beat the heat… 'Warmer weather can make quality sleep harder to achieve, as the room needs to be at around 16-18°C for optimum comfort and rest,' explains Dreams' resident sleep expert, Sammy Margo. 'Even slight temperature increases can disrupt this, so it's important to prioritise sleep hygiene,' highlights Margo. Here, she shares some smart tips to stay comfortable and well-rested throughout the summer… Sleep solo or adopt the starfish position: 'Sharing a bed can double the body heat, making it harder to stay cool during warmer nights.' 'One simple but effective solution is the Scandinavian sleep method, using two separate duvets, which allows each person to regulate their own temperature and reduce overheating,' suggests Margo. If possible, she says to also try spreading out. 'Ideally sleeping in a more open position, such as the starfish position, to allow maximum airflow around your body.' Freeze your bedding: 'Place your pillowcase, or even your top sheet, in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime – the chill won't last all night, but it's a great way to ease into sleep.' 'For an extra cooling boost, try popping your pyjamas or an eye mask in the freezer too!' Or, for a longer-lasting cool that doesn't require any prep, she suggests trying a memory foam ice pillow, which are designed to stay refreshingly cool through the night, without needing to be frozen. Chill your skincare: 'If you use beauty products such as facial sprays, toners, or moisturisers, consider storing them in the fridge,' says Margo. 'Applying chilled products to your skin may help soothe and refresh you, especially on hot and sticky nights. Plus, it can feel like a mini spa treatment before bed,' she adds. Block out heat during the day: 'Prevent your bedroom from turning into a greenhouse by blocking out direct sunlight during the day,' advises Margo. 'Use blackout curtains or blinds to help keep the heat at bay and reduce overall room temperature.' She continues. 'Keeping windows closed during the hottest parts of the day, and only opening them once the air cools in the evening, can also make a noticeable difference.' Take a lukewarm shower before bed: 'Not cold – lukewarm,' underlines Margo. 'While it might seem obvious to take a cold shower to cool down before bed, it's surprisingly not the most effective option. 'A lukewarm shower helps lower your core body temperature gradually when you step out of it, triggering your body's natural cooling process and promoting relaxation,' she explains. 'Which in turn may make it easier to fall asleep comfortably.' For more sleep-related tips and expert advice to help you get a good night's sleep in the heat, visit Dreams Sleep Matters Club.

Revealed: The embarrassing body issue that stops many women from going on roller coasters

A trip to a theme park with the family might sound like a great day out. But for some women, it's not always a pleasant experience. One particular health issue leads to anxiety about what should be a fun trip. Bladder leaks can be experienced by people of all ages but are often caused by pregnancy and childbirth. The common problem refers to the unintentional passing of urine. It's something that causes many women to skip roller coasters to avoid ruining their day. Millions of Brits are thought to be affected by the issue, but women have revealed the impact it has during their visits to theme parks. Research by Alton Towers Resort found that over half (58 per cent) of women say that fear of bladder leakage puts a downer on their family day out and can ruin their enjoyment. While 43 per cent of women admitted to avoiding rollercoasters completely over worries about bladder incontinence. Some even miss the day out completely, with 28 per cent sharing they have skipped a trip because they feel lonely or embarrassed due to the issue. While 40 per cent of women admitted they would be more likely to go on rollercoasters if they felt more confident about the bladder leak protection they used. The theme park released a video featuring Apprentice star Luisa Zissman and Celebs Go Dating expert Anna Williamson. The pair paid a visit to Alton Towers and interviewed women on their thoughts on bladder leaks. 'Why are you sitting here, sitting out, watching?' Luisa asked a woman at the park. She admitted: 'I wet myself just walking up that hill.' Luisa asked another pair: 'Would you rather scream on Wicker Man or sneeze with a full bladder?' One swiftly replied: 'Scream on Wicker Man.' Anna and Luisa asked pelvic floor physiotherapist Jennie Hughes for her best tips for those wanting to ride roller coasters without a worry. She said: 'I would say to squeeze at the back passage as if you're stopping wind from passing. Exhale and squeeze, inhale and relax.' The pair then went on to put their bladders to the test on Wicker Man. 'That was really fun,' Luisa exclaimed afterwards
