GRS to seek a two-term cap on chief minister's tenure

The Star17-07-2025
KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is considering a proposal to limit a chief minister's tenure to two consecutive terms, says its deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
He said this was among the goals of the coalition's manifesto and policies but it can only be achieved with a two-thirds majority in the state assembly.
With that, he said GRS must strive to secure this majority in the upcoming Sabah election.
Armizan said a strong majority would allow the coalition to push through its agendas for the people, based on the Sabah Maju Jaya development initiative and the four pillars of its struggle.
"The four (pillars) are Sabah First, Sabah Forward, Sabah Prosper dan Sabah United. To see the Sabah Maju Jaya agenda through, we must walk the talk and ensure the work is done," he said here on Thursday (July 17).
Armizan said these components were decided by the GRS and Pakatan Harapan state administration in December 2023.
'Reformation needs amendments to the state constitution, and this can only be done with a two-thirds vote in the assembly,' he stressed.
Based on analysts' observations, however, no single coalition or party is seen to be able to form the next state government, and mergers of coalitions or parties seem inevitable.
There is a growing grassroots call for GRS to go solo in the polls, while its federal partners hope it will continue to work with Sabah Pakatan, and even Barisan Nasional.
On the other hand, Sabah Barisan is willing to work with Sabah Pakatan but has reiterated its refusal to collaborate with GRS, while GRS claims that the door for negotiation has not been closed yet.

Bangkit Sabahan 2.0 rally postponed due to technical and logistical issues

Zulkarnain KOTA KINABALU (July 25): The Bangkit Sabahan 2.0 rally, initially scheduled for tomorrow at Padang Merdeka, has been postponed to a later date due to technical and logistical reasons. Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Mahdar said the decision was made to allow more time for coordination with fellow activists, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and security agencies to ensure the smooth running and safety of the event. 'The new date for the rally will be announced in early August 2025,' he said in a statement yesterday. Zulkarnain added that the rally is intended as a show of unity and support from the people of Sabah for the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)–Pakatan Harapan (PH) government. More than 100 associations and NGOs across Sabah have expressed their commitment to participate, with the organisers expecting a turnout of over 10,000 people.

Speaking at the launch of the party's 'Gasak 17 This Is the Time' Information Seminar on Friday, Hajiji called for clearer communication on Gagasan Rakyat's mission and the State Government's achievements. The seminar at the Sabah International Convention Centre marked the start of the three-day Gagasan Rakyat Annual Assembly. Hajiji said the party's information chiefs at all levels must now activate their networks to engage the public more effectively. He also highlighted the role of the party's Women, Youth and Beliawanis wings in ensuring messages reach communities across Sabah. Strong grassroots coordination, he said, would help reinforce public confidence in Gagasan Rakyat and the GRS-led government. Around 400 information chiefs and committee members from 74 party divisions took part in the seminar, which focused on aligning strategies to face current political challenges. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Perak KPDN To Aid Public With eCOSS Registration At Rahmah MADANI Sales Events

IPOH, July 25 (Bernama) -- The Perak chapter of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has pledged its full support to assist the public in registering and using the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme (eCOSS) system, especially during the Rahmah MADANI Sales Programme (PJRM) across the state. State KPDN director Datuk Kamalludin Ismail said their officers will be stationed at each PJRM location to help facilitate the registration process, particularly for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. 'We understand that some individuals may face difficulties registering for this system, but we guarantee that our personnel at each PJRM site will assist them until the registration is successfully completed,' he said. 'We believe that the eCOSS system, currently in its pilot phase, is not only designed to log the purchase of subsidised cooking oil by eligible recipients, but also to prevent leakages in distribution and ensure that supplies reach the intended beneficiaries,' he told a press conference here today. On July 23, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali announced that the eCOSS system would be expanded into a mobile application to address distribution issues related to the 60,000 tonnes of subsidised packet cooking oil allocated monthly for Malaysians, especially the B40 income group. The eCOSS system is designed to cover the entire supply chain, from distribution to end-user purchase, allowing for greater efficiency and accountability. Kamalludin added that eCOSS enables authorities to detect shortages of packet cooking oil in specific areas early, and to analyse purchasing trends to prevent hoarding or misuse by unauthorised parties. 'The data collected not only helps the government manage supply more effectively, but also ensures transparency and prevents any form of misappropriation in the distribution network,' he said. As of now, he said a total of RM53,488,905.38 in sales has been recorded from 983 PJRM events held across 24 parliamentary and 59 state constituencies in Perak.
